The Ukrainian lyre (similar to a hurdy-gurdy) was a popular instrument from the 16th century until the 1930s when the Soviet authorities ordered a ‘clean-up’ of blind musicians in cities and towns across Ukraine. History contains allegations that Soviet officials organised a conference for 300 Ukrainian kobzars and lyrists, at which all of them were trapped and executed.
It was this legend that inspired Lviv sculptor Hordiy Starukh to continue the tradition of lyre art in the present day; he taught himself to make wheel lyres, and now his goal is to produce at least 300 of them.
