I'm already sold on it. The textured analog sticks and the overall look of it won me over. I'm going with the Light Gray & Yellow version because I think it has kind of a retro look (like something out of the late '70s or early '80s), but I think the "Apricot" one looks great too. Other than the back buttons and the turbo functionality, the Split Pad Compact looks to me like something Nintendo should have come up with years ago as a Joy-Con alternative. Something like this directly from Nintendo with wireless, HD Rumble, and gyro would undoubtedly have sold extremely well. The only reason I can think of for why they chose not to make their own Joy-Con alternative is that maybe they didn't want to risk undermining the original Joy-Cons in the eyes of the consumer. Oh well. Their loss is Hori's gain. And while I know there are "better" alternatives out there with wireless, rumble, and gyro, I would always recommend Hori's Split Pad products over those because they're officially licensed. Quality in many unlicensed products can be a crapshoot, but licensed is generally pretty reliable.
@switchunboxing2 жыл бұрын
Really I’m trying to work out the value of the license myself because the Nyxi/Binbok seem to be better in every aspect except for me just the shape of the controller. I’m really digging my compact but the dead zone is slightly off putting so like you can move the stick a bit before your character moves. The Binbok and JoyCon do it too but it’s less noticeable. However, after using these compact for a week, I don’t notice it anymore. Might depend on the game though. It felt awkward playing Monster Hunter Stories 2. Like I was walking on ice or something BUT I’ve had no problems with THPS which I think is saying something. Actually maybe that’s because your stick is almost always fully extended lol. But I haven’t noticed with ACNH or Disney DLV either. I really just love the vibe and feeling of these. And they look so cool I could eat em! Have you seen the Pokémon Gengar ones? I’ll def be doing a video on them soon I think they just look so amazing and you’re spot on with the retro off white!!! Good ol Compaq computer right there!!

I think the triggers on the compact are way better than the Nyxi. I love that the compacts do not need batteries verse to the Nyxi do. I switch back and forward depending on how I’m playing. I highly recommend the compacts if you are on the fence of buying them. They are worth it. Specially if your hands alway cramp up, the compacts will help that.

Yes sir! Look at the Gengar Pokémon ones oh my GOD can’t wait to review them next month. Still testing them out. I still think they’re my fave. One thing that disappointed me is the stick dead zone. Didn’t realize there was a term for it but where I thought bigger stick meant more precise movement, it actually doesn’t register the stick until you’ve tilted it quite a ways. This can result in a slippery butter type feel. Looks like regular JoyCon have it too now that I compare. But maybe not as bad since the sticks are so short. Now I gotta test it against the Pro Controller. Maybe I’ll do a video on it lol.

@Switch Unboxing there is something to the shape, shoulder buttond and analog sticks that make playing something like Doom 1 so perfect with the compact. @switchunboxing Жыл бұрын
Yes that is for supporting the weight of the system when it's setting down on a table with the Split Pad connected. Without it, the weight of the system will cause bending at the slide rails that the Split Pad connect to the Switch with. This results in damage and loosening those rails. Good design to have in place since my Switch primarily sits on my table when not in use!

How does the speckled grip feel texture-wise compared to the split pad pro? I found the pro extremely rough and irritating to use, I could not stand it. Does the speckled feel like its going to scrape off, catch on anything, rough or uncomfortable? Anything that you could best compare it to? Same for the sticks, they look like they have a texturing in the middle.
@switchunboxing2 жыл бұрын
Yeah like I said the sticks are very similar just has the texture in the middle so a little better grip. I just don’t love the dead zone. Split Pad Pro is similar. So, when you move the tick, there’s an amount of distance you have to travel before it registers the movement. Can result in a bit of an icy slipper feeling IMO. But most people don’t seem to notice or care. It really depends on the game. For example playing THPS I don’t notice because I’m always on the outer edge of the stick. Same with games where you’re constantly walking etc but if you need to move the stick from one end to the other real quick like left to right you might notice. As far as texture it’s great. It’s really subtle but it works. I don’t see how it could snag on anything.

Honestly give me rubber contacts over tact switches any day when you can fit them in. I wouldn't call them mushy myself but soft and tactile which is nicer to press in than the tact switches on the joycons. Also that analog stick and cap? Yeah that's legitimately great for third party, I even like the size, resistance and amount of travel. I'm sure they're alps and will crap out after a year or maybe two unless you get blessed by the gods and get an alps joystick that actually does last a long while, But regardless of things that even plague first party controllers from all companies, they just feel good.

I first got the Hori Split Pad Pros, but after being frustrated with the lack of motion controls in games like BotW and Borderlands 2, I got the MobaPad M6. The M6 had the best ergonomics, mechanical buttons and great sticks, but the back buttons wasn’t a simple map, it had a bizarre auto function that if you press it more than once, it goes into turbo mode. So it made it unusable. (And my daughter broke it) So now I use the Nyxi. Even though my perfect controller would have M6’s buttons, sticks and shape, and the Hori’s ease of use, especially the mapping button being a one click solution, I use the Nyxi, which doesn’t excel at anything but does everything well enough. I desperately need a handheld controller that hangs off the sides of the Switch, with a D-pad that isn't refried dog shit. Yet somehow, the very reasonable request of having controls that actually _control your character_ is too much to ask from Nintendo and third parties. The Nitro Deck hits the dart board without coming close to the bullseye, which isn't great. However, it's still better than the D-pad on the Switch Lite or the miserable "form above function" joycons, which throw the dart in the opposite direction and buries it in the back of someone's skull.
