Hello HH. This “My First ARF” is an awesome series and has been extremely valuable to me. I bought a Hangar 9 Cub 40 ARF kit new and it has been sitting on a shelf in my basement for 10 years. With the current events of today (#stay@home), I have finally found the time and the motivation to start on this project. Watching your videos are so helpful with understanding not just the steps in the manual, but the techniques used. In addition, technology in RC flight has advanced, so now I am building my Cub 40 with an eFlite Power 46 and (why not?) a Spektrum AS3x SAFE receiver. Thanks for the inspiration and virtual help you’ve provided with this Carbon Cub build.

Thanks for the insight from both of you. Cubs fly extremely easy and well, but yours will stand out due the extreme quality of that Piper Cub ARF. Can hardly wait to see it soar for the first time.

Update to comment below. After using epoxy to refix the motor box the Cub flew great! Need to find the right mix of power and flaps for scale takeoffs, but was able to glide in dead stick in with full flaps for smooth and gentle landings. With full flaps and less than half throtltle it cruised perfectly.

If you use a soldering gun instead of a Blade to take off the covering for the stabilizer you won’t have that problem

I chose this as my first Balsa ARF (after approx. 40 EPO ARFs) due to what I heard about Hangar 9 quality plus this video series. I had 2 major problems with this specific video that might help others, one to save time and one that was potentially FATAL. First, I purchased the recommended big wheels and the video doesn't show how to put them on. Sounds easy, but there is nothing in the manual or in this video, and the Dubro instructions don't work due to the axle length. After wasting quite a bit of time and taking the wheels apart, I had to study the video in super detail to see that all you need to do is put the wheels on as-is and put the wheel collar on the outside. A big DUH at the end of the day but a 10 second comment or showing it on the video would have saved a lot of trouble. The potentially FATAL error: On the bench with recommended eflite motor and APC prop, powered up to full throttle with no issues. At the field, after taxiing, I powered up to take off and the motor box came apart under load but luckily while still on the ground. When I took it apart at home I saw that the box itself that gets glued to the square balsa mount that you bolt into the fuse just came clean off. The wood didnt break, and the screwed on mount was still in place. This was just an extremely shoddy glue job. If it had happened 30 seconds later I would have had toothpicks for a plane. So morale of the story is don't trust what might look like a tight glue job for what is I believe the biggest stress point on the plane. I plan to sand the old glue, tack it with medium CA and then reinforce with epoxy all the way around. Hopefully that holds.

Great Build Series!!! But I've one question: Did you use a Y-cable for plugging ails and flaps to the receiver? I miss this 2 cables in your part list...

It’s fun watching the build, but it made me feel like I was at a Funeral. Please change the music or have none at all. Thanks

Amazing design, but sadly poor built quality. Building one as I write this. The blind nuts keep coming off, I had to widen the rudder/elevator servo wholes for the servos to fit..., the motor box looks flimsy.. Had it not been the Hangar 9 Horizon box, I would have thought it's a knock off. Quite disappointed, especially considering the total price tag. Heard it's a good flier so I hope that at least it lives up to that
