I think in the next 2 or 3 weeks I’m going to build one. .

Thank you so much. Great job. I know from experience that this type of hive is very convenient for the beekeeper. Maybe you will like my opinion. Lids of this type (overlapped) are a little uncomfortable. They are heavy for me as a woman. I would like to make a folding lid in my hives. The frame under the roof bends slightly over time and at the joints with self-tapping screws it seems to break. If you could make a beehive using wooden nails, it would last forever. And it is also very useful when there are vertical cuts in the walls of the hive, into which you can insert a plywood partition. This cut divides the hive into two parts. The main part is large, two-thirds of the length of the hive. The second part of the hive takes up one third of the entire length. Here you can separate the old queen and several frames with brood. And in the main part of the hive the bees will grow a new queen. I do this, it's very convenient. But I do not impose my opinion. Your hive is beautiful!

Thank you 🙂 No worries at all. I always look for ways to improve. Never done learning and improving. Thank you for the detailed opinion. I really appreciate it. It makes total sense to segment things and be able to make a new queen by separation. Back to drawing board hahahaha thank you!

Thank you sir! You will never know how you helped me to learn how to make the top! I tried a few times and struggled with the tops but your video made it crystal clear! Thanks! I can now make my new horizontal hives so much more easily ! And also thank you for point out that some wood is warped , i did not know that!

Well, hello. I am happy it helped you. I also struggled with the top. Figured this was the easiest way and it works great. Happy beekeeping, my friend.

Nice build. I have holes in some of my inner covers too but they always close them off.

Thank you. That's good to know. I'm still learning so I appreciate the tip. I can replace it with a full board to save them some work 🙂

I enjoyed watching your build. The detail to the top is a very nice touch to ensure a good waterproof fit. Now that you have been using this top for almost a year, how is it holding up to the weather. Has it been a problem with swelling and shrinkage? I want to use the idea on the hive I am building so let me ask you strait out, would you do it again, did it work over the long run?

Great vids. Why do you have two entrances?
@NKYHoneyBees2 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you for watching. You can open the second entrance for ventilation or use two colonies in these hives.

These work especially well in cold climates (Minnesota and upper Michigan) and are good for older beekeepers that have sore backs. I think this is a relatively expensive build and plywood would be used for the sides if your going to make 2 or more. the edit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioPKiJaaZ8aIfpo performance comparison

I agree these are great for colder weather. Honestly, you can still build them for fairly cheap. At least here in KY 150 top. It's even cheaper if you get wood from lumber yard.

This is so awesome! But it's to short! Top to bottom needs to be deeper ! I would say double the depth and it would be perfect! Hopefully this helps you who wish to build this!
@NKYHoneyBees3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom. Thank you 😊 Yes, you can built the double deep too. I am actually thinking about building one too. I appreciate the tip. Love learning to improve.

I see 1 problem right off the bat ! ~ The Entrance holes are to big. Birds will be getting into it making nest / The holes need to be 3/8" or 1/4" Only way to stop it is ~ place nails inside the entrance holes to keep birds out

I get eggs with honey 😋 I have those round covers where you can control the size of the opening.
