Horizontal - Novice Baton Twirling - How to Twirl a Baton - TheAbbyTwirls

I continue the "How to Twirl a Baton" series with the "Novice Baton Twirling" segment by teaching a horizontal twirl in the right and left hand. This move is great for new twirlers because it starts working on basic hand eye coordination and wrist flexibility with twirling. This twirl is also the starting point to learning more difficult moves in the future.
I go over this trick step by step making sure to go over proper body work and technique.

Everyone hits there arm on this twirl at first! It all has to do with wrist flexibility and the baton pattern. Think of it like rising a bike. At first you will fall off, but after you practice you will be riding with ease. The horizontal twirl is the same way. When you first learn the twirl, you will hit your arm, but with practice the twirl will become smoother. Keep practicing and trying and you will get it in no time! Twirl!

To turn and do a blind catch, you basically walk into it. Once the baton has left your left arm, step forward with your right foot and start turning to the back while your left hand is moving with your palm up right above your shoulder, the baton will the the second elbow and then turn completely to the back and reach your arm to catch it. You should feel it almost roll on the back of your neck. i will definitely try to make a video of this in the future! Good luck at tryouts! Twirl on!

It is important to learn the twirl in both hands in just the direction that I taught you. Your elbow does not need to be locked, but you don't want your arm to be moving all over the place and look sloppy.

You should really make a DVD and write a book cos you are such a good teacher! I want to know if I have to learn the both direction (to the left+right) for both of my hands? And do I have to keep my arms parallel to the ground? I've heard that you have to keep your arms straight all the time, but that would be stiff and unnatural and tiring. Thanks

Hi Abby- My daughter is 7 and just got a baton (it's a good one and the correct size). I want to show her the tutorial videos, but I'm having trouble getting them in the right order. I clicked on "novice," but it still seems like the videos are scattered. How do I find a list of the videos so I know where they are and in what order to show them? Thanks!

Hey Francine! I upload all my videos in order of how I think they should be taught. To see them in order, click my username. This will take you to my channel page. From here, click "videos". Then click the drop down box on the right and select "Date added oldest to newest". This will put all my videos in the order you should learn them! Enjoy!!

Can you please do a video on how to do the dubble elbows i can do two but once i turn and do blind cetch how do you than keep going. This is one of the last things i need to learn befor trying out for majorette in two years!

When I try this the ends of the baton sometimes bash my arms mid-twirl; it really hurts :( Am I doing this incorrectly, or is my baton too long?

This happens, and should stop with time. Once your wrist gets more flexible and your body becomes used to this twirl it will stop being a problem. Twirl on!!

i try to use my 3 fingers to push it around my i end up using all my fingers, i tried using only my wrist to spin it (so i could keep my index finger and my thumb in place) but im not sure if it loks right...advice?

Iceydice Lexi if you bend your elbow your more likely to hit yourself I know had several bruises when I first tried this twirl but it gets easier with time!

Make sure you focus on the big end of your baton and slowly point it to each side. Really watch my baton in the video so you can understand the directional pattern. Make sure to subscribe!
