Just bought one of these, the canadian pacific in blue. It ran but quite roughly. I've never worked on these chassis before, but I found it quite easy. After a complete stripdown, deep clean, re-oiling it now runs flawlessly

Had the issue happen to a number of locos then I found out every loco uses the same gear. Many thanks Harry

I work at my local model shop and ive replaced that gear number of times and usually keep a few spares for future repairs. Its usually the smaller one of the double gear that splits. Sometimes the gear on the driving wheel also splits and have to get whole set of wheels to replace 1. Some locos have speedo cable connected on the rear wheel, so a nut runner is a must to undo the screw/bolt before removing the body.

Most definitely, thanks for mentioning the nut spanner

The drive shaft on my unrebuilt Hornby Merchant Navy came off and was lost, would you happen to know where to get a replacement and how to put it back in?
@hortoncommonmodelrailway
@hortoncommonmodelrailway Жыл бұрын
If you mean the new unrebuilt models, no one stocks the spares for them. You have to email Hornby at customercare@Hornby.com and ask for a " ticket" to return your model to the service department as it has stopped working ( you're actually asking for a reference number) takes about 7 days for a response, they'll either say send it in to us at Hersden, nr Canterbury, they'll give you the address enclose a copy of your original email in the package and send signed for postage, or they'll say sorry no can do at present. Hope this helps

A drop of lighter fluid dripped on the screw, a little down pressure andvshoukd release, otherwise its over tightened and the wire coil will come away with the screw once out, unscrew the wire coil and superglue black in place, just a smidge of glue mind you

Don't you add a smidgeon of grease to the gear wheel??
@hortoncommonmodelrailway
@hortoncommonmodelrailway Жыл бұрын
Very small amount of white grease, or silicon grease if you can get some

Respectfully, Get yourself a service cradle, doing it like that is asking for trouble, also I'm sure you did before reassembly but you never showed lubrication which is essential in that gear box. Otherwise great job but why in earth do they keep splitting. A big worry.

I've got a service cradle, had one for years, but that valve gear bends easily in one, it gets caught and once bent it's murder to get right. I didn't show lubrication as I didn't want to insult anyones intelligence and show them how to do something they already knew, but point taken for next time. The gear wheels are nylon, and the lubricant they use can contribute to it splitting, also variations in temperature as well as long times in the box not being run, temperature varients also cause it. There's 3 different types of these gears, all moulded differently, if it's an original replacement its fine, if it's the two other types,the inner gear withing the chassis block needs replacing with the one provided in the replacement kit, the gears are different by .5mm - 1 mm depending on type. Thanks for your comment - duly noted.

@@hortoncommonmodelrailway ah yes the valve gear is a pain, I tend to use a fresh sheet of kitchen paper in the cradle to prevent contamination and stop bits catching on the foam, might be worth a try. OMG they are using non plastic safe grease!!! That's terrible. Labelle 106 every time here. I wonder if someone could produce brass replacements that would be the ultimate answer? Cheers

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I'd thought the same thing, but then it would need brass gear on the driving wheel, more excuses for yet further price increases! The nylon gears have a habit of drying out, and as they dry they become brittle and split. I bought a brand new original merchant navy, streamliner one, straight out the box on the track and "whurrrrrrrr" no movement - gear had split! Back to Hornby it went, ended up with a whole replacement drive mechanism - couldn't believe it - brand new and faulty.

@@hortoncommonmodelrailway oh I can believe it with Hornby. Were you aware there is a 21 tooth and 26 tooth version of the X8849 gear set? None are available and with around 20 locomotives in my fleet vulnerable I'm very concerned. Good job you highlighted this
@hortoncommonmodelrailway

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited oh yes, which is why you know invariably have to replace the lot! I raised this with hornby, who said " you need to get an original set of gears"!!! Oh and where from exactly???? "Dunno, we don't have any!" Oh so helpful - not. And did you know, Britannias and Clans have the same problem, splitting gears, which you can't get? Solution - getvan X8849, take off the big gear, turn it around and replace on the axle and you've got a new gear! Only found out the other day when one split and could not get spares, so hope that helps you in future too.
