amazing how popular Edward is, I can only imagine when Gordon lands as a review it will literally lift off like a rocket i feel this is the best review of the series so far, it really bumps along and there is so much to see in the background, is that a HO powered Hero Take Along?, it seems you beat me to it, well done. i always said Thomas needed a home at Copley Hill, he has certainly shaken the pot since arriving!

A very satisfying review this time around, Si - wholly agree with all the points made reg; the Bachmann Edward model. It just looks super...and I adore the additional video of Percy's crash and rescue. That somehow ought to deserve a standalone upload just for the fun of it ;)

5:31-6:00 was a particularly well shot sequence. Just witnessing a Bachmann derailment at the thought of being more expensive than a Hornby counterpart, only for Bachmann Edward to come to the rescue whilst being championed by the VO, was a lovely metaphor and a great way to round off this review. I know you've said on your blog that you've been wanting to include more background action in these vids, but I think you went a bit overboard here, with unnecessary & distracting shots of Salty & Tornado. I think the vid would have been just fine, perhaps even better, without so much background movement to distract from the review itself.

Hey Sim, here's a tip. Most of the Bachmann models, if they have "Lazy eyes", you can slip your fingernail behind the faces and pop them off, then tweak the eyes carefully, as they may break. Then put the face back on. Simple yet effective.

Can't tell if you're being serious or not, but Awdry is spelt thus and not Audrey, and the two models are (if you listen to what's being said in the review) marked on different criteria. Hornby's choice of the D49 as a basis was an odd one and the wrong one. The current storytelling isn't down to me I'm afraid, so not quite sure why I'm getting the blame for it. Incidentally, the series is not US made, and the Bachmann models up to Bill & Ben have been drawn from the UK made series 1-5.

I was wondering if you were going to mention the re-pricing of Hornby Edward, and it does show the massive difference. And I agree, Bachmann's variant is worth getting and that's what I've stuck with, although I must say that at least Hornby now have the core cast, I remember back in the day when Edward was the most requested, and now is not even worth it's new price based on accuracy. As for voting I would like your views on Emily, both models are poor in their own ways, makes a good one.

Thank god for your reviews. There were too many childish users being biased towards their favorite brand and it's great to have comparisons that highlight the pro's and con's. Honestly those users should hang their heads in shame; this is the way to say what's good and what's not(!) :D

Honestly I’ve found the Bachman Edward to be far more reliable than people say he is. I have 2 of them, and they run perfectly! Gordon and Henry I had to modify right out of the box cause their eyes got jammed, and I had to glue a chunk of metal to James front truck just to keep it from derailing all the time. Edward was the only one that didn’t require servers modifications other than adding weights into the tender, which I did with all my Thomas tender engines. Overall I definitely recommend Edward so long as you give him plenty of small coaches to pull.

You mean the dark blue model? That is a model of No. 49 "Stuart", a repainted and slightly modified Bachmann Thomas, which is available from one of the Bachmann Branchline Digital Starter train sets. If you look around on the Internet, you should come across one.

The motor drive is VERY fast. The unit is in theory the same as James and Gordon but I think its the loco on the front providing differing decelerating forces which play the main part in how fast/slow the tender drives go.

A very good and thorough review, with which I completely agree. While the Hornby model might be faster and more powerful, it doesn't really look like the Edward I grew up watching on "Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends." Also, Bachmann models are more readily available to me, as I live near both a hobby shop that sells Bachmann trains and the Bachmann national headquarters in Philadelphia.

Five full days ahead of time! I am surprised. Shorter review, but quicker, and more to the point. I loved all the little cameos (and the HO converted Hiro!) by the other characters, and the little crash scene at the end. I cannot agree more, Bachmann Edward is the best of the two despite being weaker and slower. I vote Henry for next time, and I can't wait to see that Tornado face off :)

I had a bachmann Edward and, I have to say, if you're looking for accuracy to the tv series, that's fine. But the one thing this video doesn't touch on, is the power pickups. Bachmann Edward, or mine at least, had this awful tendency to stop on points, due to their only bieng four pickups on the four small wheels that are very close together. My layout has a lot of points, so it would cut out quite a lot. The Hornby Edward, however, doesn't have this issue.

He is a great reviewer and a wise man. he knows what he says. and I think you've missed the point of a "critical review" and I also note that you've missed out the positive slants he give to other portions of the model. If however you are asking me if physically some models are not as close to the character's overall shapes, then I'm afraid I'd ask you to look at the video again and think on what exactly doesn't add up.

Hornby Spencer is by far the better of the two. I have the Hornby Spencer (I just got the Limited Production one today), and I agree with everything that was said in Simon's review. Despite its wheels and handrails being black rather than silver, I wouldn't trade it for the Bachmann version, or anything else.

No. Bachnann recreates the trains. Hornby takes trains that they've already made, paint them the color of the engine, smack a face on it and you got a cheap alternative which apparently costs a lot of money
