as a child ,i always remember buying these track plans edition,s and studying them with intent ( and enjoyed every minute of it !) as to just what layout i would build when i had the money, time and space -so i managed to save my pocket money (50p a week back then in the middle /late 70,s !!) and so eventually i choose and built (with help from my farther and good neighbour !!) a layout that loosely resembled plan no 9 but it was built on the cheap using cheap poor quality wood for the base board and (very !!) second hand track and points off of a market stall -as it was all i could afford back at the time - but boy ,did i learn the hard and expensive way about cutting corners and doing things cheaply !!

I feel your pain - I've bought a lot of secondhand track and the points are always such a nightmare!

@@Codbotherer yes- we have learn,t the hard and VERY expensive way things may be cheap- but work out far, far more expensive in the long run !! and due to my complete stupidity and naivety - I thought i was getting a good bargain with s/h track and points !!- no wonder the market stall holder couldn,t sell it to me fast enough !! happy (and frustrating !!) days !!

Ah well. I bought a Mini (well, they call it that nowadays) that was just as bad a deal.

You''re very welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I bought it off (along with most of the catalogues) ebay mainly for the video and a little bit of curiosity. I'm tempted to redo them all as a simple scan of each page that lasts say ten seconds then flips to the next as well, that could be better for viewers than listening to me ramble on like Beavis and Butthead on a music video!

As a kid my dad built me plan 6 with circular cut for me to control everything I remember like it was yesterday

One of my favourites . Pics of the layouts on here were in the 74 catalogue . It was a year later this finally appeared . Trouble was in the intervening period they had withdrawn a lot of the accessories eg the turntable , in the 975 catalogue, so they had to publish the 4th edition in 1976 which was basically the same but without these accessories . Happy days! I built a lot of the 4*8 ft layouts or variants of them . Not prototypical but good fun .

Yeah, it is an interesting booklet and certainly stimulating - I've got the 4th edition too. I had a look through but didn't go for any of the ones shown for my current build. Baseboard is done, undercoat is painted, outer circuit is pinned, inner is placed ready, then sidings tomorrow...

My lockdown project has been to build plan 7, but in N gauge using Peco setrack. I have had to stretch it a bit to fit my space of roughly 7ft by 1ft 8inches. I am pleased with the result. Good luck with yr project - the accepted wisdom, so I have heard, is to start with something not too large and avoid the trap of failing to finish - I have done this several times!
@Codbotherer3 жыл бұрын
That sounds really good! Sadly accepted wisdom is not something I possess, I'm more of a 'go big or go home' kind of guy so I did two 8x4 00 scale builds over the winter, full builds of both of which are on here. Loved doing it!

This was the track plans book I started with. My first layout was based on a modified plan 3.

Cool! I only had an oval, then a double oval with a siding as a kid...now I'm excessive :-)

Hi.... The Hornby 3rd Edition Track Plan Book pre-dates Hornby Track Extension Packs. That being said, I built Plan 9 in 1977, I walked into my local train shop, Jack Stanbridges in Mount Lawley Western Australia, said Plan 9 and the guy behind the counter handed over a box of track. They had boxes already made-up for kids to just walk in and collect. I've still got my original "Dog eared" copy of the 3rd edition and I recently bought off EBay a pristine copy. As far as I can remember Plan 9 did not need to be adjusted to fit around the crossover.

My childhood layout was plan 9......Then I built plan 12...and extended it to 14ft. Then we moved to a tiny house:( 45 years later having had nothing in between I'm building .....Well, look at my YT and find out!

It's an impressive looking layout you have there! I didn't base either of mine on a plan from any of the books (though I have a few of them!) so I'm sitting there with a pair of 8x4 layouts taking up my daughter's old bedroom.

Isn't n°17 the layout Mr Snooze is building using replated Super 4?

Yes, I think you are right

Just to let you know plan 9 does not fit properly the part where the crossover is connected with the two points is incorrect.
