Another great film and repair, I may be a bit odd, but I never get bored of seeing you strip down and clean a ringfield motor . Keep up the great work Bill 👍

Nice one . Just a bit about the model . She was a special edition which came out in 1981 to celebrate Lady Di marrying Prince Charles (whatamistakatomaka). The Scottish region painted two of their 12 47/7s in large logo livery, which was then a novelty for use on the Edinburgh/Glasgow mk3 push pulls one was Greyfriars Bobby and the other Lady Di . I got the model as soon as it came out , from memory £19.95 same price as the Hornby 86 that came out at same time . The model is spoiled by these two moulding lines that run entire length of body . They were done like that to make painting two tone green livery more easy but looked silly on the plain blue versions . Hornby did eventually tidy that up , but not for years later . The model never appeared in a catalogue but the following year the large logo 47 appeared as County of Norfolk in the main range . I occasionally have issues with these 47s leaning to one sided. 25s can have the same problem I think . Must investigate . Come to think of it it could be me leaning to one side - too much wine perhaps ?

Interesting also that this doesnt seem to have directional lighting. I have three of these and all of them have the lighting. The earliest being the one with a complete mess of wiring, works but is like spaghetti. Thanks for the vid Bill. Can not beat a good skoosh

@@stevecatlow8339 I think it was cost cutting Steve. The previous three had directional lighting . I suppose a factor could have been the switch to domino headcodes instead of an actual head code

Another great fix, You've got it running as good as new. I think my (sadly late) friend Stephen got me this model for my birthday, and when it was his birthday (or just after) I got himm the new Mainline class 03 shunter, from a model railway shop in Doncaster. We used to go to Doncaster and York in the school holidays, train spotting, and also visit the NRM in York. Always enjoy your videos.

I bought a used class 50 and found that the segments on the motor were worn through. I cut out new segments from brass and soldered them on top of the worn ones. I cut down some Lionel brushes and it all worked fine. Parts are harder to come by here in the US.

Loved the large logo locomotives in the late 70’s and early 80’s. They meant we could even continue « spotting » during French and English classes from our classroom at Bishop Walsh comprehensive. We had a great view of the Walsall-Water Orton branch which ran past our school 😉.

Good effort bill, Had some locos in for repair for a customer myself recently. He got them cheap and all ran like crap ..the amount of oil in then was DISGUSTING 😢 but got there in the end thankfully! Keep up the good work👍

I just had them to hand. But you could use all sorts of things. Guitar picks, spatulas, lollipop sticks, bits of old credit card, doesn't matter as long as it holds the clips open and doesn't damage anything.

It's all you need to be honest. There have been a couple of instances when one would have been useful for me but for what they cost I'm loathe to get one. They are not essential and on a work bench I would much rather have a powered section of track for testing.

Hey Bill that's a nice looking model i have been looking at one of those but a Lima version.There are some really nice older models about it makes you wonder what they were thinking when they designed the ugly class 66 !
@MrJayb9882 жыл бұрын
A handy tip for you I find glue spreaders are good for when you want to separate body’s from the frames I’ve found it to be easier as you can slide them into place once you’ve got one in each side you can pop another in next to it and slide it across between the frame and the body to get under each clip and they can be picked up cheap on eBay.

Nice repair and as you say it just needs a good run now. I wonder if it was put back together incorrectly at the last service? For example, wheels the wrong way around on the trailing bogie and frames inadvertantly swapped around. If I was keeping it I would have added some weight to aid traction, help with stabilty and improve electrical contact.

Just too dry. A very dry ringfield with slightly loose gears like this one can just lock up. A clean and some lubrication is all that's needed.

I remember when this model came out but never ended up owning a 47 despite having lots of locos, including the Hornby 25, 37, and later the 52 (Western) models with ringfield motors. I still don't own one. Shame that this version still had the lines on the bodywork from the green version and no directional lights though. Hornby models at this time seemed to run so smoothly compared to their older x03/04 powered locos such as the Class 31 and 35 (Hymek) I'd owned. Yet, I'm not sure whether the earlier motors haven't proved more robust? Loved your video as ever, and has kicked off me restarting collecting in anticipation of taking up the hobby again more seriously when I retire in a few years.

I think the difficulty getting slow starts might be due to the magnet becoming weaker after all these years but I’m not sure on that.
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
Could be.I don't like removing old ringfield magnets as they are prone to break easily so I've never tried remagging one. However, I've noticed on poor slow starter ringfields that the gears are quite loose. I think it may be slight lock up until enough power is there to move them. Once they get going they will run slowly fine.
@joshwilliams03912 жыл бұрын
@@oobill I don’t like removing them either. Also I don’t have a re-magnetiser and I’m not sure you can get spares. That said I tried my near-identical Class 47 (‘Robin Hood’ in BR small logo livery) after watching your video and it was better than I remembered at pulling off. That’s an interesting thought about the gears as well, it seems plausible.

another question how do you tell if its a 3 pole motor or the fasster 5 pole motor
@oobill2 жыл бұрын
Count the poles on the armature. A 5 pole motor isn't faster just more efficient and will operate a little more smoothly especially at low speeds in theory.
