This loco looks like a lot of fun. I have got the Railroad TTS Scotsman, and I am not sure I should have two Scotmen! But looking at your collection, 2 Scotsmen do not appear to be such an extravagance! I have the Live Steam Mallard and I am bound to say this loco produces as much steam. Producing steam in a small wattage heater is much less dangerous than the live steam model which gets very hot!. The only wrong thing is that the steam would be vented from the safety valves when the loco was active and ready to move. The live steam loco scores higher in that it only vents steam from the chimney when the loco is running. This is a helpful and well-produced video. Thanks for taking the trouble to make it.

@@AllensTrains Good to hear from you and thank you 🙏My TTS Railroad model wasn’t running too well the other day, otherwise it may have featured in the run part of the video. May need a clean and lube. Regarding valve steam, the TRS version would give that as well, if it’s worth you making the obvious investment? What Hornby have achieved here is remarkable at the price compared. My inner jury is out over the water vapours being let loose in those very intricate areas and near the track. I know this isn’t actual steam but, still it is vapour? Your thoughts would be of interest on this 👍💦

@@modeloco How a steam engine works is that water is heated to a very high temperature so that the water disassociates into hydrogen and oxygen. This explosive mixture is then discharged into the cylinders where it condenses and forms a vacuum which drives the train. The exhaust is released as steam. In the Hornby model the water is heated to a temperature above which it would boil, but not hot enough to disassociate it into hydrogen and oxygen. So what is released as exhaust is just steam. I have found that steam being released around the layout is not a problem. In your case the layout is in a large well-ventilated area, and the amount of water is minuscule in relation to it!

The Flying Scotsman was never an A2 or an A4! In 1923 it was an built as an A1. Many of the A1s were rebuilt as A3s from 1928. Flying Scotsman was rebuilt in 1946. There's minimal visual differences between the A1 and A3. Review is good and interesting bar these historical inaccuracies.
@modeloco

Hi David, Thank you for your input. I don’t say Flying Scotsman was an A2 anywhere, I’m sure, and just checked but, if I do let me know where, you may have just been stating this not saying I said it but, comes across like that. Scotsman had a brief period as an A1O around 1943 and in 1978 McAlpine fitted it with a spare A4 boiler? It will be good to hear your thoughts on this. Regards and 👍, Andy

Early on 2 min 30 you refer to FS as an A2. Possibly in error on second time I listened to it. FS carried an A4 boiler in preservation. Dia 107. As you say but this never made it an A4. Other A3s in-service also carried A4 boilers, but this never made them A4s. Boiler swaps were common on A3s. There were different types. Dia 94HP with a round topped dome and 94A with banjo dome. 107 was visually similar to 94A but the wash out plugs on the boiler near the short handrail near the cab are diagonal instead of horizontal. It's a fascinating minefield. Additionally A4 boilers were rated at 250 reduced to 225 when mated with an A3. Hope this helps. Really appreciated the video. I've 14 A3s trying to justify one with sound and smoke with the household treasurer. But your video had helped

It's an amazing model. Mine works really well top just having an issue with water coming out of the smoke box onto the buffer beam at random times. Have you had any issues with this if so did you find a fix ? Great video cheers!
@modeloco
@modeloco 2 ай бұрын
Hello, Thank you and Yes I had the same issue of excess water seemingly appearing from nowhere on the buffer beam too at odd times. This went away after altering the CV211 setting, down from 65 to 60 on the HM|DCC app. Interesting that you’ve had no bridging issues though so maybe, you could try 62 or 63 and see how you go. The one that worked for me was 60 though. How to’s and the different increments with two CV’s I tried within this video. In the end altering just CV211 was all that was required for bridging and pooling. Hope that cures it for you👍🙏

Would you say there's a lot of condensation as the loco is steaming? I have a snow setting and would hate for some of the snow to wash away due to the water over time. Nice and thorough look at the loco, interesting that the vapour could condense quick enough for that surface tension problem to arise... Also, you wouldn't happen to know if this model comes with the power bank pre-fitted, would you?
@modeloco
@modeloco Ай бұрын
@@FlyingScott Hello, I’d say as it’s cool running too, that the water vapours released hasn’t been an issue at all. There is no Power Bank but, have found no reason to fit one. The issue was flooding and not a condensing issue. Have done a quick CV fix video following this. Hope that helps👍

Water on the buffer beam means it's been overfilled. I'm only aware of this as when I was a kid in the 80's I had a steam train that used oil and of course I overfilled it thinking it would create more smoke and it used to do the same thing. Try running it with a tad less water than they suggest. Damn I miss that train.
@modeloco

@@rambledogs2012 Since updating the CV it’s been fine. I think the bridging issue caused it to flood as I did a ml less than suggested but, yes certainly if it happens again then all good. Have you got one of these new ones yet?

Awesome, glad you have sorted it. It can look as though we have knackered the loco when it doesn't work as it should, hey? I'm only just deciding to get back into building a layout and I'm torn between gauges due to space. I really want to go back to my childhood and get a steamer with smoke but it seems as though it's available for OO rather than TT or N gauge. I have been watching your videos for ideas though and ready to push the button on a buy for N gauge but.......Ha, the most important decision I currently have as I hit 50. Deciding on a gauge. Thanks for replying.
@modeloco
@modeloco Ай бұрын
@@rambledogs2012 I’d strongly advise if you love steam and real smoke as I do, to go OO. I have both scales and yes, a good sized loft area, so do appreciate space can be an issue yet I’m being drawn back from TT now toward OO. If you’re getting any age related vision issues, like myself, then n scale is a no go. It just hasn’t got the feel but, that’s my opinion of course. I love TT as it has all the latest tech in these but, the cool steam is wonderful in OO along with being able to really appreciate the locomotives and rolling stock. Don’t rush in whatever and all the best 👍
@rambledogs2012
@rambledogs2012 Ай бұрын
@@modeloco Well N gauge was my first go to due to space but yes, as I hit level 50, the eyes are indeed heading south a tad so OO might be the way forward. 8 x 4ft is the max I can go but if I want that steam then I guess OO it has to be. Cheers

@@martinpattison1567 Superb that Flying Scotsman still travels the Earth. This model doesn’t have the double Kylchap exhaust which then needs the side fenders to stop smoke blow back and hides the character of this iconic engine but, even with this coat and blinkers, the power and draw of this locomotive is as great as ever. The Brunswick green doesn’t look as dark as it does in real life and of course we get the boiler bands painted very nicely too, to break that up on this model and missing today to my amazement but, hey ho. I’d say, The NRM have to be now instructed to restore the single exhaust, remove the smoke deflectors, bring back Apple green and 4472 asap as Peglar did or at least add the boiler bands and single exhaust for now. As to why this was not done when restoration was undertaken remains a complete and utter mystery to me? To understand that the NRM turned down the pleas to save Flying Scotsman in the sixties another but, glad Peglar stepped in. Could you ever imagine this being done to The Mallard. 🙏

Great review, can it be ran on just a normal DCC controller and not the HM7000? Thanks
@modeloco
@modeloco 2 ай бұрын
@@richardgray6606 Hello and gratitude back for getting in touch. Yes, it can be if you have a Hornby Legacy Dongle plugged into an xpressnet DCC controller (not Loconet though). It needs to be an xpressnet one like the Hornby Elite or Select. I’ve done two videos on this if you’re still unsure 🙏 This way you can run using app and controller simultaneously. The other way is to register the Bluetooth decoder fitted locomotive and set it all up on and through the app then put it over into DCC control mode, within the app and run it using any standard DCC controller with the same chosen address allocated, beforehand, in the HMDCC app 👍 PS Just make sure that the gadget, power supply or DCC controller you use isn’t one that Hornby may state isn’t recommended. So just check their compatibility notes on their website too.

Hi Andy, Love your reviews and videos. Like you, I have received my Flying Scotsman with steam. I have tested it on my Rolling Road and all functioned well out of the box. The one thing that did happen regularly is that the steam stopped during a run. I noticed that there water vapour condensed at the top of the chimney and created a water film blocking the steam. The only way to clear it was using a tissue to absorb the water and the steam continued. Have you had this issue or any other of your viewers? The Prince of Wales P2 does not have the same issue as the chimney is elliptical and the water film is unable to form. Cheers

Can I ask your advice. I’m tempted to buy this model before the prices rise in Sep and I think using the Hornby points I have that I could get about 20% off. The only thing stopping me is that personally i’d rather have the model in Apple Green. They will obviously reissue the model over the next 12 months in other liveries. What do you think the chances are of them reissuing FS again in another livery. I can’t help feel that’s probably pretty slim any time soon
