His Mozart concerto 22 from the same competition was stunning as well. I think the only reason he didn’t win the Mozart prize at the Cliburn was because it would have given him all the prizes and they needed to share the wealth a little.

I am not an expert but there was something hauntingly beautiful going on during this performance. I am completely mesmerized by it. But we should not forget the conductor Marin Alsop who did an amazing job. You could tell that she knew that this was an exceptional performance. Just watch from 41:40 when she is nodding her head, leaning against the piano, probably thinking "Yes, you are doing well! Keep going!". I actually didn't know she conducted at the Queen Elizabeth competition in Belgium. Was that in one of the recent editions?

Other creators reacting to this pointed out that they thought at that moment around 41:40 she was crying already to the music.

Considering the extreme pressure he was under, in the final Rd of the Cliburn... Lim's performance was fantastic...

I'm proud to present to you my Korean friend, Lim Yoon-chan. I'm Korean, but I'm not fluent in English There are many things that I do not understand English, but expressions, gestures ... I understand it in the language of music and I have a fun subscription !! 👍 👍

Is there a story to this concerto? I heard another piece of yunchan lim where he played liszt, one of the transzendental pieces and one commented very interesting that it describes Goethes Faust, where Faust and Mephisto follow a Willowisp to the Brocken where the witches dance and zoom around on their brooms. Some pianist obviously play it in a slow dreamy way while yunchan lim put a lot of suspence and speed in to show the erratic moves of the willowisp and witches and the suspense of new experience and not to get spotted. In this concerto i seem to hear at some point some horses galloping, is that correct? Otherwise i am completely lost. The only instrument i play is the radio in my car. I do appreciate a master, i can hear that clearly but i am sure i miss too much of the greatness here. Greetings from a fellow german. Sorry, for my english might be a bit off.

Yunchan Lim is great. Not wanting to compare the two but listen Alexander Malofeev that is amazing too

I love Alex, but Yunchan is more passionate, has better technique, and he hits all the chords.

I heard Malofeev at the last Tchaikovsky competition, and it was disappointing. But I'm never disappointed when I listen to Yunchan. I went to Yunchan's New York debut last year, and it was riveting! Prolonged instant unanimous standing ovation!

Come on! Malofeev is not a great player! But this student Yunchan Lim played cold dry colorless piano sound Rach concerto no 3 in the Cliburn Finals! Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the most important lesson is the Love of beautiful colorful piano sound! All the modern players are colorless cold dry piano sound players like Kissin Hamelin Zimerman Pletnev and latest hype student Yunchan Lim! All the colorful beautiful piano sound players are gone dead like Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Radu Lupu Artur Rubinstein Vladimir Ashkenazy!! This hype student Yunchan Lim not the best Rach no 3 player like better ones=Horowitz Cliburn Mogilevsky Gavrilov( more genius and colorful than Yunchan Lim) Argerich Sokolov( more Titanic than Yunchan Lim) Ashkenazy( volcano sound!) Crazy world we are living the people claiming that these cold players like Kissin Hamelin Pletnev Zimerman and hype student Yunchan Lim are the Greatest!!

Look, Alex is incredible in so many ways but there's no alternative to Yunchan Lim when it comes to Rach 3 and Liszt etudes and maybe a lot more, there's a reason he took the world by surprise and racked up tens of millions of views in a short time.

Lim's Rach 3 is WAY too fast. Just because he can play it that fast does not mean he should. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

@@bigpancake420 I have heard that before. The technology available at that time had very specific limits for timing records. There was a frequent effort to speed up recordings. Just because he had to play it fast to record it does not mean he intended to. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

@@horoffra This concerto has a very high number of pixels/measure. When you play it too fast the pixels tend to become immeshed into a mass glob of sound. It ruins it. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
