This situation is the most pathetic I have ever seen. I am watching this game from Europe. Stayed up all night for this game. Kickoff was 3:15 am. And I saw the most unbelievable finish to the game, amazing win for Detroit, all they have been working for, only for the win to be taken away by the corrupt league and corrupt officials. This is and was exactly what I saw. Pathetic.

The NFL lost all credibility when we could predict that the Lions would be able to march down the field easily and score the game tying TD. Based on what I've seen over the years on sportsbooks, it's become obvious to me when the refs are going to manufacture a dramatic ending. All the books let you bet on Dallas the other night up until the final minute. In a normal football game, Dallas closes it out without any drama and kills the clock, but that would be boring. The NFL is now the WWE.

2 linemen had to report. Skipper had to report a substitution. All he needs to report, is eye to eye contact with the ref. If the ref doesn't see it before the snap, the offense will be called for "illegal substitution", so Skipper (70) had to be there. #68 Decker has to report as an eligible receiver and did so. If the head ref saw Skipper line up as a guard and thought Skipper was reported as an eligible receiver, the head ref should have blown the play dead before the snap. Also, there's a PREGAME with the refs and head coach 1 to 2 hrs before the game in the locker room where they go over trick plays and personnel changes to avoid the very thing we saw. Detroit did everything they were supposed to. Refs wrecked this game by incompetency or worse.

Fun fact, intentionally using an entering substitute (Dan Skipper) to confuse the opponent (an ineligible 6th lineman running at the referee to "fake" reporting as eligible) is unsportsmanlike conduct. Rule 5, Section 2, Article 11. And Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1. Also, the referee tells the defense who reported and often announces it by microphone, so it isn't a secret who the 5 eligible receivers are.

DanO is wrong about the Allen & Bills situation. The Bills org was gutted in the 2 offseasons before Josh was drafted. Bills just got rid of 2 very talented receivers in Sammy Watkins & Roberts Woods. O-Line got decimated with the retirement of Eric Wood and loss of mind of Richie Incognito, and the running room was well past it's prime, lending to the rookie QB leading the team in rushing. Allen got drafted into a rebuilding shell of an offense.

I don't see the point of trying to fool the opposition when the referee informs everybody who is reporting eligible as a matter of routine. The official made a mistake but trying to be too clever backfired.

If your team like the Atlanta Falcons, who need a quarterback, it might not be the craziest thing to trade with the Bears. I don’t see one of the teams drafting higher up, emptying their pics out for either fields or Caleb Williams. It just doesn’t make sense but if your team that feels like you just need one star quarterback, then you might as well

There needs to be an independent investigation and if they find either team involved in fixing this game or any other games that team and organization needs to be suspended from any post season games for at least 2 or more seasons and if an owner is involved they must relinquish all ownership and interest in any NFL team. Furthermore any officials involved should be fired and not be allowed to work in anything related to the NFL.

Dean Blandino on Lions-Cowboys controversy: ‘Referee would never go along with that’ Story by Dan Morrison However, after the game, Detroit head coach Dan Campbell explained that this is something they went over with officials before the game. Because of that, he felt there shouldn’t be as much confusion over the play. That’s something that Blandino says wouldn’t happen, though. Basically, they wouldn’t be OK with a play that didn’t allow the defense to know who was reporting as eligible. They’d make it clear. So, there was some kind of communication issue from the start. “If a coach told officials that, the officials would tell them they couldn’t do it,” Blandino said. “The referee would never go along with that and would make sure the defense knew exactly who was reporting.”

The Lions manipulated this. Why did 3 line man go up to report to the ref? Why did 70 rush in when he was not going to be eligible. Why did 68 lurk behind the other line man when reporting. The Lions were trying to hide what they were doing and it backfired.

There is a simple fix to this whole issue of linemen reporting as eligible. Once the player reports to the head referee, the official then makes an announcement over the public address system letting everyone know which player has reported as eligible. If the coach realizes a mistake has been made in the report, he should be allowed to throw a red flag stopping the play clock and alerting the official of a problem. As for everyone losing their minds over this mistake, they should remember that the referees made a mistaken tripping call against a Dallas player on their last drive which prevented them from scoring at least a field goal which could also have been the deciding points of the game.

The Cowboys are victims of this as well. If 68 is identified as eligible, he’s covered and this is a non issue, giving them a clean victory, which is now tainted.

For all those saying "what about the phantom tripping call," let me explain why they arent comparable. One happened during fast action of game speed, other happened while the clock was stopped. One was a bad judgement call that shpuld result in a downgraded rating, the other is an egregious procedural error likely due to laziness that should call into question your qualification to officiate football at even the high school level.
