Compressor slugging because it gets liquid refridgerant. This creates enormous vibrations on the high pressure line (which can be heard inside) and when this is not fixed it kills the compressor in a short time.

OMG. Many of the comments for this one are WAAYYY off. Changing a capacitor ? Bolt issues?? Those of you who have had some sort of proper training should recognize that the compressor is "slugging" liquid refrigerant. The compressor is designed to pump ONLY A VAPOR, not a liquid. The most likely problem is an overcharge of refrigerant. But things to also examine are the evaporator coil for dirt and blockage. Reason being: a dirty evaporator coil wil give a low suction pressure reading and cause an unexperienced person to add refrigerant, thinking this will raise the suction pressure. What WILL raise suction pressure is a CLEAN evaporator which in turn allows more warm air to pass through it. Without actually being there to see these things, that is my first thoughts. If you put a set of gauges on this unit, you will see for your self what the suction pressure is doing upon startup. The suction pressure will undoubtedly jump way up and eventually drop as the sound reduces. But without having gauges on a system and making a 100% visual check of the evaporator coil, you can't make a positive determination of the problem. DON'T JUST GUESS GUYS AND BE NOTHING MORE THAN A "PARTS CHANGER"
@DennisCamaro6 жыл бұрын
My ac unit was freezing up and the ac guy said that the system was low on refrigerant and that evaporator lines may be dirty. He put a charge on it and the the slugging noise as you described started. Never did it before until now. Its and R22 system. Do you think he over charged it?

I'll never fully know, because this system has been replaced! There was an ancient line set from the 70s soldered into the middle of the system that was far smaller in diameter than the modern one We suspect that was causing a restriction. New r410a system, line set and a-coil.

I’m a little late to this video, but my house has the same exact unit. It’s a nordyne, and they are absolutely horrible. Mine will only make that noise when my power will blink off real briefly and kick back on. However when it does that, mine will run with that sound constantly. I live in an extremely stormy state, my power flicks off all the time from lightning. I have to flick thermostat off and back on after a few minutes. Our unit of course has a plethora of issues besides that. I would never in my life voluntarily install this brand in any place I lived given the choice of course.

Don't get Goodman i had nothing but trouble with them and it's just as bad as nordyne . I had a furnace from them last 10 years until the secondary heat exchanger failed then the AC UNIT failed so don't expect anything from them to last no more than 10 years so I recommend LENNOX.

@rogeliolopez21905 жыл бұрын
It is a Hard Start but thats just when the refrigerant hasent been compressed in a long time, enough for the refrigerant to go from gas to liquid and since the compressor can't compress liquid the pressure release valve limits the amount of refrigerant going to the compressor so it can be compressed and the noise stops. This is why you might also here a loud hiss in the indoor coil. But if this happens on a regular basis ( every normal cycle of about 10 minutes of being off ) then the compressor is having a hard time compressing and you should have it inspected for repair.

I really dont want to put anymore money into A/C work!!! especially with a new and working system!

Lakario Davis I am an HVAC technician, albeit only about a year of solid field experience. But there are a few things to consider: 1.) the make/brand of the unit. Not all AC units are created equal which in turn means cheaper parts that fail quicker than their more expensive counterparts. Is it fair? Of course not! But you get what you pay for. ( No, I’m not implying you purchased a “cheap” system - just that some units are predisposed to fail) 2.) if your system was just installed, you must call the jokers who installed it to come back and give it a look over. If they’re a reputable company who stands by their work, they should fix it! Any person with half a brain can install a system, but a true technician SHOULD be able to explain to you part by part what’s causing the issue. 3.) that sh*t should be under a warranty! Call them back! If you want to take a video of the noise you’re hearing, I will happily give you my best opinion of what it could be. Edit: most common failure I’ve experienced with noisy startups are Capacitors!
