Note: the 'Planet Dinosaur' series was produced in 2011 and much of the knowledge concerning Hatzegopterex has moved on following discoveries in the intervening period.
From 'Planet Dinosaur: Episode 6, The Great Survivors', BBC; produced by Jellyfish Pictures. 2011. Narrated by John Hurt.

It's on Hatzeg island, where paleontologists have found evidence of island dwarfism. Most of the animals that lived there were smaller than their cousins on the Euroasian mainland. Because the herbivores were small, the plants/trees didn't have to grow too tall to escape their teeth.

@@mrkemblegilstrap 😆 The Hertzy can fly, it wasn't native to the island. It could fly over, pick up some lunch, then fly off somewhere else. The reason it's associated with the island is because fossil remains were found there, probably because it visited a lot due to the easy pickings.

The Sauropods in the video are dwarf species, they only grew as big as a Horse, which makes Hatzegopteryx look gigantic. Those dinosaurs lived in an island called Hateg, which is in what is today Romania, all the dinosaurs that lived there were dwarves, they evolved smaller because of reduced resources and space.

Recent evidence suggests that Hatzegopteryx had a slightly shorter neck and a more robust frame than its American cousin, although there are still some disputes about the size thing. The highest estimates are 36 foot wingspan for Quetz and 39 foot wingspan for Hatzy, but some have argued that 36 feet would be a more realistic estimate for Hatzy, which (if accurate) would make them about even.

Actually the dinosaurs that lived with Hatzegopteryx were on islands, and becuase they had limited resources they shrink over time, it's a common event called island dwarfism. Therefore those are some of the smallest Sauropods to ever exist, and Hatzegopteryx didn't suffer from less resources because it could fly to other islands which is why it got so big. It was actually the apex predator there.

If you're wondering why Hatzegopteryx is towering over those sauropods, it's because those sauropods are _Magyarosaurus_, dwarf sauropods about the size of a pony. The pterosaurs aren't the size of Godzilla, calm down. They are still the largest pterosaurs (Standing height of ~5 meters at the head when walking on the ground). That said, newly described _Hatzegopteryx_ material includes a cervical VII that's about as wide as it's long (Witton and Naish 2017). Witton and Naish both demonstrate that this is pretty good evidence for a short-necked _Hatzegopteryx_ rather than the long-necked one you see here. Azhdarchids were probably a lot more diverse in body proportions and size than is commonly made out to be. That's also sufficient enough evidence to say _Hatzegopteryx_ is definitely not the same animal as the giraffe-necked _Quetzalcoatlus_.

I'd argue the pterosaurs were actually subject to gigantism. For they had no real competition (they were very much the apex predators of the archipelago which hateg was a part of) and indeed, as you say, they weren't bound by the smaller sizes of the islands, but instead by the archipellago as a whole. Also most other Hatzegopteryx species (this is Hatzegopteryx thambema) were much smaller with wingspans of 3-6 m. So this is a special case indeed.

The island this occured on (Hatzeg island) suffered from island dwarfism. Almost everything native to the island was smaller than its mainland counterparts. Those sauropods and trees are only about 3-4 ft tall (about as big as a pony or small horse) so while the hatzegopteryx was massive (as big as a giraffe or bigger) it wasnt so big that it looked like rodan from godzilla, which it would be if those trees were normally sized

Ironically, the smaller Pteranodon was the pterosaur that held the niche of a pelican (or perhaps more accurately, pelicans have inherited the niche from Pteranodon). That said, I'm assuming you've seen that footage of pelicans just striding up to bird nests and swallowing up their babies? This video is definitely what that reminded me of ;)
