Guys I'm a medical student and yes these procedures were very invasive and dangerous. These procedures led to the discovery of the modern surgeries. Few of the brain surgeries do involve the route from the eye to the brain . Bloodletting = phlebotomy which is still used as one of the treatments for hemochromatosis. And lobotomy is still done. The only draw back back then was that there was no anaesthesia . And another treatment such as electoconvulsive therapy is still used for severe depression.

Bloodletting was practiced between 15th to 19th century. At that time people believed that every illness was caused due to the imbalance of 4 humours blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. They believed that to cure an illness they need to balance the humours.
