Ira Levin might just be my all-time favorite author. His plots are so tight, and his endings are all great. Mind of Winter sounds really interesting. I may check that one out!

Such an excellent idea for a video! Pet Sematary has a great ending, but I will argue that many of his other novels have brilliant endings as well, they may not be what you are expecting but not every good horror novel has a happy ending! Sometimes unhappy endings can be a kick in the gut and just as effective, I really need to do a re-read of Rosemary's Baby as it is a horror classic and I was not totally impressed on my first read. I say Swan Song by Robert McCammon has my favorite ending.

I agree that a good ending doesn't have to be a happy one. I haven't read all of King's work so it makes sense that he has other good ones

Rosemary's baby has been on my shelf untouched for years, I really need to get around to it! Only horror I have read recently with an ending I particularly enjoyed was a vampire-horror romance called 'Happiness' by Shūzō Oshimi. Such a bittersweet ending and got dark in some areas of the story.

The Nightmare Room is a good one. Read it a couple of years ago and liked it but can’t remember the ending. I need to revisit that one. Rosemary’ Baby is awesome and the ending is perfect. Loved it.

I went through something similar with Salem's Lot by the ending and the way the remainig protagonist took on the last bad guy it felt lackluster and anticlimactic, but on another note looking at it from a certain perspective (not sure how to put it in words) it was kinda ok ab passable for an ending.

I so agree with Pet Sematary. Fabulous ending. Just as good was the ending of Thinner by Stephen King. Wow I remember holding the book in my hand stunned. Wow it was good!

I’ve read most of them, and I agree. I do have Mind of Winter because of what you’ve previously said about it. I just need to start reading it. Have you read The Reincarnation of Peter Proud? Not really horror but the ending has stuck with me for, sheesh, nearly 50 years, I think. I don’t think it’s a particularly good book either (but I was young and dumb-as opposed to old and dumb now). But the ending left me disturbed and I remember it. Yes, I’d like to hear a list of horror books that didn’t stick the landing (no fair including more than 2 King books :). I do like his writing, so I enjoy the journey even if the ending doesn’t work.

@@TheShadesofOrange The Reapers are the Angels by Alden Bell. 190 pages. Not really horror, but an ending that'll stay with me. And the character and the lyrical descriptions make the book almost literary. Some funny lines too--“...you can't put nothing past these southern boys. They just sit around waiting for somebody to kill their brother so they can get started on some vengeance. It's like a dang vocation with them”

I’m all about the journey too. I usually get sucked in with the situation driving the horror books. Endings are almost always meh for me. I recently finished a book called Transmuted by Eve Harms and that ending was so bat shit crazy it really made the book something special inside my head. 😂

I mistook this as "horror books with happy endings" 😂 but still a great video. I would love to see the reverse video with bad endings. Another author i think who struggles with their endings is Junji Ito. But i still love his bizarre stories so much so i don't let it bother me overly much 😉

I DNFed Pet Semetary about half way, and with some exceptions, stopped reading King. The exception was The Dark Tower series, but the final two volumes were disappointing. Vol 5 King resorted to Wizard of Oz references, making me wonder if his imagination had bottmed out. Vol. 6 King made himself a character with a self indulgent recital of his accident, but it's King. And the ending disappointed with no real resolution for the Gun Slinger.
