Horror Short Film "Cat's Game" | ALTER

I have two theories for this short film: Theory A: The three other people in this film are either figments of this guy's imagination, or people he has actually killed in the past, and he is simply reliving the memory of killing them. The end scene represents how he is a prisoner to his own mind, trapped in a continuous game of cat and mouse by his dark impulses. Theory B: The three other people in this short film are actually people the main character has killed in the past, and these are their spirits playing mind games/tormenting him, perhaps to prevent him from killing other people in the future or out of revenge. Maybe the main character is actually dead and this is his version of hell, but I feel that is a bit of a stretch.

Humans are the real monsters, and that's the most frightening thing about them. All we need to do is stroll around with our eyes open as life swarms with innocent killers. The protagonist played the cat's game because the monsters were inside his head, he kidnapped or dabbled in dreams and carried his monstrosity inside his mind. At the first scene he uses silence really well to increase the effect the film has on us and you can't be distracted. It has a good very dark plot to keep you engage. Even though the final act is far-fetched, this is a compelling and suspenseful short film. Still want to see one more time to understand even my own intelligence. The writing is neat, with nearly zero unwanted dialogues or scenes. ALTER always proves that he is the one who gives us a fantastic cinematic experience. Thank you.

Only explanation I can think of is, A Psycho- Not your usual serial killer! He has murdered a number of people in real life and re-visited the situations in his mind to play the cat and mouse game with his victims. A compelling storyline, good music and acceptable cinematography is what held this short film together. Yet another classic from ALTER. Thanks to the makers and no one but ALTER.

@@BlueViewCinema just did. Aline by Christophe. Beautiful song. But I think I'm biased towards the Arch Tremors one you guys used in The Alter Version. My reasons being: 1. The lyrics about 4 people starting a trouble in a seemingly organised complacent situation.... mimics and plays right into the mood for the film with 4 charecters and an unanticipated change. 2. I'm a non native English speaker. But unfortunately I can't speak French. Which I guess is the case for many people. Even though it sounds exotic, I can't understand the lyrics of a French song. So it can be off putting. However, since I can understand the lyrics of the other English song it adds an element of anticipation. Like... Is this song an Easter egg to the plot? 3. The second song choice personally feels more suited to the mood of the film than the first one once that I've read the translated Lyrics of Aline. I saw the B&W version of the film too. That feels really good too!! Gave a vintage noir vibe.

Hi Michelle! Great question! The ending demonstrates that this entire scenario was all in his head. That each person was one of his multiple personalities. He’s playing an unwinnable game with himself, hence why we call it “Cat’s Game.” There are little hints throughout that help explain. Sometimes a second viewing explains it better.

This movie definitely is inspired partly by the William Hughes Mearns poem “Antigonish” A portion of it is on the side of the refrigerator: “Yesterday upon the stair I met a man who wasn’t there He wasn’t there again today I wish, I wish he’d go away” Consider this in your theories! Wow, this is epic. My first thought when they all start laughing was that this is come kind of twisted role play, cos play to the extreme, and its all literally a game. Then the ending, and now what I'm thinking is this guy invaded a home, and took it over(much like the guy at the end of Unbreakable) and these were the family members he killed, and now that their gone there was no more "fun". When the guy who escaped says "your game is no longer fun, let's make it fun" it may be his psychoses reliving the event over and over like a sick choose your own adventure fantasy. Either way, the song at the beginning immediately set an eerie vibe, the main actor was excellent as were all the cast. Extremely well done.

I found this so disturbing. I actually thought he was this sweet but crazy guy at the beginning who was making a really nice meal for his three cats (crazy cat guy) and then he opens the door of his victims and I am like...what???? But then he opens another door and a victim has escaped only to change up the game on him. Then I was thinking at one point...is this psychopath vs sociopath. As Crazy Cat guy didn't seem to have empathy but scary escapee victim (and his look at 5:32 mark...that was just terrifyingly chilling) seems to want to play with his toys (hence other victims) and not get bored. But then the end...I was like, "okay did he get done in by the sociopathic victim....or did that just imagine that is how he got done in? Did he get done in?" Then his eyes at the end said he was in his own hell when he saw himself and knew that he was going to have to go over and over this for penance for what he did while he was alive before he was killed off (or was he caught? and then killed?). I took it he had died based on him seeing himself and the dead victims all acting very alive and that this was his bed he made for the afterlife.

@@BlueViewCinema I did find the film disturbing but what my first line of response was going to be was "I couldn't predict anything about this movie. Every time I thought i knew the direction it was going to go, it did something else" but then I think I was called by my son who wanted back rubs to help him sleep or maybe it was taking care of the goldfish...I don't know. What I do know is when I came back to write a comment I had lost the focused beginning train of thought and then i remembered after writing this and reading other comments and was going yo say more but then I have been commenting so much on so many films I am worried I am getting annoying to others so I just left it as the one comment. Yes, I had quite the ride with this film. You have your own channel. That could be highly dangerous for me as I already need AA (Alter Anonymous). Not sure I should add new addictions to the pile. But maybe?

Now *THAT* was crazy as a bedbug!!! Absolutely enthralling. I thought it was going to run along the lines of _'The Collector'_ with his careful scanning of the vicinity, as he entered the house, then upped my view to a grander scale, as he fed three with cat food, suggesting someone was playing cat and mouse with audience perceptions. At one point I even thought maybe it was some sexual deviancy group BDSM game, when the supporting character decided the game would continue, but under new rules. 😂 Once the manic laughter began the penny began to drop. Superb film and kudos to everyone involved!

My take: They all are the souls of the previous owners (different time periods)of this house who each did gruesome family killings by being driven into a madness/frenzy like state by the house, then committing suicide and are now stuck in a Limbo going through an endless loop/are just passing their time until the next occupant comes to stay and the loop gets started again.

The guy with the glasses seems like from the 1980's, the girl seems to be from 1960's, the guy in the white clothes seem to be from the 1940's and finally the other guy seems to be from the late 90'/00's so yeah... The latest occupant as per the timeline seems to be someone from 2020 who would be A family man/woman as usual... Someone who has a weak set of mind that the house and its long gone " residents" could easily manipulate into committing the same set of crimes they did before by killing their family and then finally taking his /her's own life. And thus they will be caught in an endless loop of cat and mouse till the next occupant will come in the next 20yrs or so

Hi Artemis! We actually didn’t have auditions for this one. We used two veteran actors on our team. We’ve actually used the both of them in a few short films! This story was written, shot and edited within 2 weeks!
