Terry O'Quinn was so good in this movie, that you genuinely like him when he's in his Nice Guy mode, even knowing that he's a psychopath and a killer who's eventually going to try to kill his entire family. He's just such a likable guy and the all American dad, but then when something sets him off and he switches modes and he's a real crazy and heartless bastard! Should have won an award for that role!

Reminded me of Ted Bundy in a way. Charasmatic, charming, and smart and also knew how to outwit people and avoid getting caught. I know it's just a movie and all but I can see why he was put in a mental institution and it always made me wonder what kind of mental disorder he had to even be put in such a place.

Wish they would do a prequel to these. How he became so twisted and where his grudge against perfect familes came from
@Xehanort107 жыл бұрын
He doesn't have a grudge against perfect families. He's trying to find the perfect one to replace the abusive one he grew up in. There were originally going to be flashbacks showing the Stepfather's childhood in the 1st film but they were cut out. But there are little hints that he had an abusive father like the bit in the first film where he's ranting to himself in the basement saying things like "You're a good boy. You're a good boy. Isn't he a good boy? You're daddy's little angel" which I assume is what his mother used to say to try and calm him down whenever his dad flew into a rage. Then he says "SHUT UP" which is him imitating his dad shouting at him I think. Then he says "Let me out. Let me out" which IMO is him repeating what he said as a child when his dad probably locked him in a wardrobe or somewhere like that. Then lastly he says "We are gonna keep this family together. You had better believe it" Which suggests to me that his dad used abuse to control him and his mother and keep them in line but with the families he marries into The Stepfather is more subtle about it than his dad was and uses fake kindness and manipulation to control them. According to Stepfather II it was his dad who taught him to whistle Camptown Races because when Todd asks him "What was that song you were whistling before The Stepfather or Gene Clifford as he calls himself in that film says "Something my daddy used to sing."

I totally agree, man! His father I'm guessing beat him and tortured him and sang Camptown Races afterwards??

It's more of an urge to fix broken families by transforming into the perfect mate and father figure for each of his target families. He's like the beldam from Coraline. The perfect fantasy, but the fantasy has flaws. Like a hole in your clothing. Once found, you (or the victim) starts to doubt it's stability and either start poking with it or just throw it away entirely. Thus the Beldam(The "Stepfather") goes into transform mode. Starting up a new identity, while maintaining the current one til the new one is ready(Job quit, and appearance chosen, and location marked). Then killing and cleaning time.

He was against the imperfect family. Anyone who got in the way of his search for the perfect family paid the price. Even if you're the estranged husband trying to put your imperfect marriage back together as Phil was trying to do.

Theshark15z If he wanted a loving family he shouldn't have been so obsessed with having the perfect one that he killed innocent families for not living up to his definition of it. He didn't seem to get that there is no such thing as the perfect family. And he based his idea of it on old 1950's TV shows even though the characters in the shows were just actors playing parts and not how a real family acts. And just because the Stepfather grew up in an abusive family that doesn't justify him killing innocent people for not living up to his obsessive ideals of the perfect family. He was evil plain and simple.
@Xehanort109 жыл бұрын
+Theshark15z He murdered Carol's ex husband Phillip because he was getting in the way of "Dr Gene Clifford's" plan to marry her. He killed her best friend Matty for finding out that he wasn't Gene Clifford and that the real Gene Clifford was a black man and The Stepfather had stolen his name after seeing an obituary announcing that he had died. But it was killing Matty that caused The Stepfather to give himself away by stealing a bottle of wine from her house and whistling Camptown Races while he walked back to Carol's and Matty's blind neighbor heard him. Teaching Carol's son Todd to whistle Camptown Races gave him away too because it was Todd telling Carol that "Gene" taught him Camptown Races and realizing that Gene had Matty's bottle of wine caused Carol to put two and two together and realized that Gene had killed Matty. And the whole "stereotypical caring 1950's Father Knows Best" facade he put on was just an act to get the women he dated and married to trust and fall in love with him.

Dr Danvers and Jerry look at his model house. Jerry: So where do your thoughts take you Joe? Danvers: It's beautifully crafted. Jerry: More than that. It's much more. Joe: What's that? Jerry: It answers your question of why would a man murder one family and marry into another time and again. Jerry suddenly swats the model house against the wall breaking it which makes Danvers call Smith the security guard who comes in. Jerry: Hey wait a minute. Wait, wait. Jerry picks up the pieces of the house and puts it back together. Jerry: You see Joe. The eternal optimist believes that he can fix whatever's broken. So he just keeps on trying.

"What do I have to do? Why is this so hard? Haven't I said that I love you? HAVEN'T I BEEN LIKE A FATHER TO THAT BOY? I EVEN HAD SEX WITH YOU FOR GOD'S SAKE. The Stepfather grabs the bottle of wine from Carol. "You will NEVER." The Stepfather slams the bottle of wine on the dressing table. "Find a better family man than me pumpkin. Not in this lifetime. Oh no. You can't just walk away from me. Not now. Not ever."

Although the composer released a cd of his film scores, the Stepfather 2 parts did not include this lullabye. A newly released dvd claimed to be in surround sound, but the actual movie was mono, including this closing theme music. The stereo version does exist in Special Features because we can hear it in the background of this new dvd while somebody talks about his participation in the film. Who releases a surround sound dvd where only the Special Features are in surround sound? Who does that? I returned it for a refund.
