Moloch is sometimes used to indicate something that demands immense sacrifice and subservience. Karl Marx referred to money as a Moloch The religion of Moloch - as such creeds may be generically called - is in essence the cringing submission of the slave, who dare not, even in his heart, allow the thought that his master deserves no adulation. Since the independence of ideals is not yet acknowledged, Power may be freely worshipped, and receive an unlimited respect, despite its wanton infliction of pain. Sounds all familiar today especially during covid19

The idea that nuclear winter would be so devastating and last so long is starting to be criticized by many experts. The models of the 1970’s and 80’s are outdated, which are the ones he is stating. Since we have witnessed vast swaths of the earths forests sadly burn (from Brazil, California to Australia) we have learned a lot about how vast fires effect the climate. In turn previous assumptions about how burning cities would cause a nuclear winter are no longer seen as credible. What’s more is that the total amount of nuclear weapons in the world today is a fraction of the total from just decades ago. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be terrified, but ideas of a long encompassing nuclear winter is simply wrong.

Being in a large metro area, I will most definitely perish in any potential nuclear war. What brings me peace is knowing human civilization will emerge after such a travesty. How many warheads / what cumulative yield were used in those projections? 20-40 degrees celsius seems like the largest drop in temperature I’ve ever heard from such a prediction, and that includes predictions made from when there were likely over 10x the number warheads deployed currently.
@deadvatniks Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. That is highly alarmistic estimate.
@Doctaphil64 Жыл бұрын
I imagine there's an exponential curve in the required yield for debris. That said, imagine how important the short term impact is. Nuclear winter doesn't need to "black out the sun" for 10 years. Destroying most major crop yields for a year could starve hundreds of millions, let alone ten years and who knows at that point.
@mbaxter22 Жыл бұрын
I’m more curious what the models would show for a limited nuclear exchange (which is actually the far more likely scenario). Say just a few dozen warheads and nothing more than 1 megaton in yield. All-out nuclear war is extremely unlikely over Ukraine, but a scenario where Russia and the US/Britain launch something like “counterforce strike” on each other is very plausible. Only a few dozen major nuclear detonations and maybe a hundred tactical nukes all told, with a few million dead on both sides. All major population centers spared. What scares me is I suspect the models would show little impact on the climate, and our leadership know this, and thus, they are perfectly willing to push for all-out victory over Russia, even if that means great danger. After all, in such a scenario it’s we citizens who pay the price, not our leaders.
@GarretKrampe Жыл бұрын
But those were done in the 70's and now, don't forget you have about 12 more nations , like China, in the mix and they have at least 3500 warheads alone, varying from 100KT to 1MT.

It's fascinating because again, like Newton's 3rd law of motion, every action always produces an equal and opposite reaction in the opposite direction and orientation. The same happens in human psychology. When there is Truth automatically there has to be a mistruth and we live in the equilibrium of these two. Maintaining the balance is crucial because both are necessary for the fabric of society as social beings but I feel "Moloch" like to tip the weights over to the mistruths.

Molach sounds like the Shadow of humanity. The only way to fight the shadow is compassion. In this world, we are all attached. Tell Someone that breaking their focus on a 15 minute video to check social media 3 times is problematic and they will become quite defensive. This is the shadow of that individual working in real physical time. Rather than look to see how detrimental this can be, they tell you to get lost, that they will do what they want. They push the notion of it being a problem to the back of their mind. The shadow inside oneself does this also. A problem is seen and quickly pushed into the darkness of their mind and forgotten about, so that they can remain in their ecobubble of feelings that they have been nurturing. This is really troublesome on the global scale as we try hide things from the rest of us that the majority genuinely wouldn't accept so that we can go and play out these as if a rollercoaster on a track. Only this pisses the majority of people off and that can cause great destability especially when trying to wrangle such an illusive energy. And because the Molach is like the Egregore of all of humanities shadow, it looks to seep into our reality in sneaky disruptive ways. We as humans really need to identify when this beast has control and treat it as a dog we take into care that was neglected for a lot of its life. It may bite you, and growl. But you have to treat it a certain way, or else you're just cultivating the hate. Its bigger than one persons emotional intelligence. It is like math in the sense that it has to be done in a way that gets the answer, not in a way that you want.
@kingofmaiars Жыл бұрын
You don't fight your shadow. You compromise with it. It's not something that can be defeated. Finding balance with one's shadow is what sages of old dedicated their entire lives to accomplish. Compassion is a fool's tool to put on the make up of virtue. An emotion that should be reserved for one's younglings must not be given so freely as we only have a limited amount to give. Running out if before you reserve some for yourself by giving it to strangers will make one resent and hate himself as this would imply they themselves, by extension their kin, weren't worthy of it.
@asadalbra Жыл бұрын
@@kingofmaiars there is no fighting. A person resisting is a person resisting. It feels uncomfortable to sit as your negative feedback loops slowly expire. Most people wish to but experience this unrest and stop. Compassion is a resistance reduced way to escape from the "shadow" . Of course this compassion is only a word, but if you look behind the energy of compassion, it is healing, forgiving growth. Its support. Its what people need to help guide them. People dont want to change. The ones on the fringes of society get ridiculed yet end play a huge role in guiding society. Imagine if their was compassion for this. How many more people would be doing wonderful things. To believe this is an emotion for youngsters is of great disservice. Virtue isnt easy. It is a fully invested way of living. Not everyone wants to be devote like a monk and accomplish this way of living and this is one reason why, we must use compassion as a tool even when we dont want too. That too is how you build a virtuous man. Compassion is not something you can run out of, you can only run out of energy yourself. That is something the person would need to work on

When ever humans become tree huggers and sang combaya, that is when humanity made its greatest leaps into the future, when we we were cave men we fought each other then we decided to live in peace and join forces between. Several clans or families, we became tribes and villages. Then decided to restore peace and live togather in cities that ultimately fought each other . Then countries then empires . Then in WWll we decided its stupid for empires to fight each other . The next logical thing to do , is to go back and revive all the international laws and treaties that kept the peace for the last 70 or more years , then go ahead and finish all the treaties that were scheduled for negotiations. And just keep going until we have one united planet that is focused on the future and space discovery . Its doable. But capitalism is in the way . If we dont ditch it right now we are screwed. Capitalism is moloch not power . We have a cure for power called democracy . But there is no cure for capitalism .

In the wake of disasters, people from other areas come in and provide assistance. There won't be any outside unaffected areas in a global disaster. With no sense of how to return to normal, vestigial baser instincts (Moloch) will arise. Luckily part of those instincts will be value of community.

This war mindset has been around since religion was multiplied. At its simplest form, war is part of difference. One god and 1 religion will solve these differences, all humans being fully enlightened and entwined. That god is Aten, the precipice of all religions. Simple is always the answer.

Here is an alternative: The Russian leader, Putin, started 2nd war in Chechenia to cement his leadership. His support grew with each and single war. By letting him walk away with face you will guaranteed another war. He needs a pretext not a reason. He will be back in Ukraine just like he went for second round in Chechenia. Sorry to say but Americans have very one track minds, unable to look from other perspectives. You need the ability to shelve your proffered story and say "I like this, but what other hypotheses I can come up with?"

Moloch isn't AI. It's the fact that everyone feels the need to develop it (quickly or incautiously) because otherwise other people will. If we don't do it, the Chinese will and then they'll control the world, and the Chinese think the same thing. Or his example was I have to use an instagram filter to keep my market share because everyone else is doing it and I'll fall behind if I don't...and everyone else thinks that way so is forced into doing it. Yet since everyone does it, no one benefits. It's that kind of dynamic where everyone collectively is forced into doing things that hurts us all. He's making it into a being, a monster, it so we have a more concrete sense of the enemy/problem.

I respect Mr. Tegmark's views on AI GPT4 etc. I take issue with his analysis of the war in Ukraine, the motivations of the West in defeating Russia's war of conquest. I also take issue with his contention that we are closer to nuclear war than at any time in history. Those positions are seriously flawed. It isn't pride that commits the level of force needed to deny Russia victory in its war of conquest. It is survival. Survival and a debt owed to the over 60 million people, killed defending civilization and an international rule of law. Comparing the invasion of Ukraine to the Falkland Islands is a false analogy. Compare the Russian invasion of Ukraine to Hitler's invasion of Europe. That is the powderkeg the West sits astride. Not a matter of pride. My father and all of my friends fathers along with some mothers were all veterans, Allied soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, during WWII. Mr. Tegmark pontificates about the prideful West on your show because millions took up arms and sacrificed their blood and their treasure so Mr. Tegmark could sit in that seat. I am a University Educated practicing Political Scientist. Never again was proclaimed at the trials in Nuremberg and Tokyo. Mr. Tegmark's comments are tinged with what sound like a business and economics orientation. Stick to counting beans. And another thing. I was in my mid teens when President Kennedy embargoed Cuba and boarded Russian ships at sea. Your assertion that we are closer to nuclear war today than at any other time is laughable. You diminish your valid arguments with such rubbish.
