The worm starts out as a tiny larvae in a river or someone's backyard pond There are 3 ways this worm can get into it's host which is usually a grasshopper Cricket or katydid or praying mantis One of them is waiting for the insect to drink up water which will be an open portal inside the insect Another way to get inside is to burrow into the meat of an insect a cricket or a praying mantis might eat like a mayfly Praying mantises will catch mayflies and crickets to eat dead mayflies Or it can find its way onto a plant that a grasshopper or katydid might eat Once inside its host for example a + grasshopper it will lunch on its internal organs being careful not to eat the important organ in order to keep it alive as long as it can It needs to keep its host alive so it can get back to the water It releases chemicals that make the insects lose their minds and actively seek out bodies of water to jump into Grasshoppers and mantises can't swim and under their own control they usually know to stay away from large areas of water It also uses chemicals that make the Crickets unable to chirp it when's the best quiet as possible , if something eats that cricket, the worm dies too Is basically controls the cricket's brain and uses it as a free Uber The host will eventually find a body of water, parade themselves straight into it and then drowned to death he worm will then emerge from the now dead cricket and swim off into the deep, feeling satisfied that its mission was accomplished There are times where insects are lucky enough survive and find a way back to dry land, possibly wondering why it was in water but this is a very rare occurrence and usually by the time the drowning insects regain control of their own thoughts and the worm is evacuated from its body oh, it's most likely already on the verge of death Their actual videos of these things coming out of insects

yeah, they are symbiotic parasite. Quite fascinating, tho terrifying premise that things like this exist just drop their host into the food chain and the process begins again. I believe i mentioned that i followed up the a university science department of some kind. They were surprised to see one this far north. They had only ever heard of 2 others up around Michigan. We corresponded and had some very educational conversations. wish I could remember who... thanks for the write-up, saves me the time. lol ;)

It had literally just come out of one. This is their mature form. They then lay eggs in the water, those do their easybake thing and then the birds eat em. Grass Hoppers and other bugs eat the bit out of the Pigeon Frappe turds buffet and then the parasite that lay in wait, infect the host. It then matures inside and at time of maturation, infects the hosts brain, driving it to water. Much akin to but exactly opposite of hydrophobic. They jump in, die and the cycle repeats. It's not really a symbiotic relationship so much as a parasitic one. Thanks for the comment ;)
