This video may be slightly graphic for some. Equine or horse reproduction is what todays video is all about - join us as we visit Shawn an expert in horse reproduction - we take 3 horses (a wild mustang, a quarter horse and a race horse) to him to be checked - we find out one needs a surgery and will need to be sedated. We even get one preg tested - is she pregnant - if so by who? Busy day on the farm!

Don't know if you want my opinion or not, but I'm giving you some based on my past experiences of being a stallion handler at 3 breeding farms, being the only one that could handle the stallions at show barns, and from owning my own paint stud in the past.... Gold 66 may be able to impregnate, but I definitely would not allow him to breed at all right now. I'd wait till he's broke, trained, and if he were mine would not mount a mare till he's 5 years old when he hit sexual maturity. You have a 50/50 chance any stallion could become extremely hard to handle and real studdy behavior, charging you with teeth bared ears pinned and striking out with front feet. Without Gold 66 having any training you have a much higher chance of him becoming that way.

I would go with 66 over them all this year, let the young colt grow and mature a little so you can evaluate him, next season he should be good to go if you keep him a stud. And you need a LOT of training on that young colt before deciding to keep him a stud

I had one ultrasound and she isn't pregnant. But the vet said that she's in heat. She had 33 follicles and can be pregnant easily. I learned that I put her with stud at the wrong time of the season. So spring and summer is the time. Plus it was her first time so we might have to hand breed her. My other mare I did not take to the vet. I had witnesses that saw the stud mount her a couple of times. So I'll just wait and see.

They only perform that surgery if there's a health risk usually when their anus is set deep in and their poo gets inside their vaginas causing life threatening infections in the uterus, it's not done just to race horses. Since Cherry Twist was sewn up in the past, I would not undo it and breed her if she were mine especially not knowing why exactly it was done in the first place. I don't tell people what to do or not do with their horses though.

We love your channel and enjoy getting to know you and your family. With that being said, I am not sure why you would want to breed more horses that are not registered. There are so many unwanted grade horses in our country. I was hoping you were going to rehab Cherry Twist and get her to a good weight before even considering breeding her. It seems like you have quite a few horses to keep you busy with training, so I am just wondering why you don't concentrate on that?

@@suzanneyoung8011 Still cruelty. And to most mares it is done before they even foal, just sothat they are not pregnant on race day, not because they are going to get an infection. When they are done racing they end up in slaughter.
@jacolyon3148
@jacolyon3148 3 жыл бұрын
@@suzanneyoung8011 You know it is always funny to me how people try to make shelters and animal rescuers stupid. As if we do not know nothing about anything. We are the bad guys without any sense and with poor logic, meanwhile we are just the ones that look through open eyes. I am not a person seeing a horse for the first time, thinking the way it was treated is cruel. I have done this my whole life. People racing horses do not care about the horse, only the money they make when it wins. And a very large number of Thoroughbreds end up in slaughter. The slaughter pipeline does not ask what breed you are nor whether you were bred by a backyard breeder or a registered breeder: they scoop up horses from the smallest miniature, the prettiest Appaloosa, right through to the biggest draft horses. Including Thoroughbreds! And unlike most people believe, horse meat is not just made into dog food, a lot of it is exported to other continents and sold under the label BEEF for human consumption. The whole system is corrupt. If they cannot run for a few months due to minor injuries, they make no money, are starved and eventually end up in Mexico. Oh… and castrating is cruel - but only for a little while then it improves their lives and lengthen their life expectancy, unlike sewing young horses shut. That procedure might be lifesaving to some mares, but in most cases, it is only to make their owners rich. The history of how it developed and who created it, is not going to change anything. It being a veterinary practice is not going to change anything either. Whether there is a Dr. in front of your name or an idiot behind your nose, it does not change the affects of what you did/are doing. In South Africa it is veterinarians that are the leaders in rhino poaching. Is that also right because veterinarians do it? So, this being a “common and safe veterinary practice” does not make it humane and being a thing that veterinarians do, does not make it right. If a veterinarian will go as low as killing a rhino and chopping up her baby with the sharp blades of a panga, I am not surprised that some are involved in this multibillion-dollar industry. (The market size of the horse racing industry > 3 billion dollars.) With this I do not say that all veterinarians are animal abusers, nor that everyone in the horse racing industry are animal abusers and in it for the money. But you cannot deny that there is cruelty involved, including steroids and all kinds of other things they do to make the horses run faster and more efficiently. Thanks to everyone that fight against things like this, to all the veterinarians that do make a change in the lives of animals and places like The Farm on Route 66 that actually stop dozens of horses from even entering the slaughter pipeline. You are doing a great job!

Have talked to people over the years. One complimentary way of upgrading horses is looking to see what one horse has conformation wise and the other doesn't. The good of both tended to come through. A lady did this for race horses, and you could breed to get a good horse without having fancy lines. Another topic I've heard over the years is that genetic information accumulates over a lifetime. What that means is that a horse that has been used for cutting or used in a lot of terrain, had a bunch of training, etc., it imprints as experience and then that carries to the baby. If I had a choice of a stallion, I'd look for one who hadn't been stall-raised in a sense and that had as much experience as possible, while still considering good conformation, attitude, etc. With time ahead, would work in as much basic training, extra good supplements to work towards a good chance.

Sounds like Cherry Twist is a good example of "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" or in the other end. I vote for not breeding this mare. I don't think this mare is for you all, I know you were excited but it sounds like there's repeated painful surgeries in store for her if you are to breed her. Also, not only are thoroughbreds prone to injuring themselves they are also very often simply not as safe to ride as the quarter horses and Indian ponies you're used to. Maybe one of the people on the channel who are used to thoroughbreds would want to adopt her.
