@@farmerbob9572I have a little genius that I'm going to attempt to plow behind my forecart but I'm interested how you converted yours to use with the horses any info would be appreciated thank you
@farmerbob957229 күн бұрын
@ As far as the plow goes, there is no converting to it. Just hook on as if it were a tractor. The key is to move the tongue over on the fore cart to the far right. I’m assuming you are using three horses. If not, you might not have to move the tongue. The only two adjustments is where the double tree hooks on and where the plow hooks on. If you look at my video, you see pretty much where I’ve hooked on. Where are you located? Good Luck , Bob. Note: The newer fore carts might allow you to move the tongue.

Real nice video Bob. We are about 70 miles from Lancaster County, PA. In early spring we take a ride out to New Holland and further south. The Amish men are often out plowing (never on Sunday). I think they always have 4, horses, but might be mules too. Always early in the day. Seems they only work them when it is cool. I suspect the horses enjoy it, they are good at it, like professional athletes. There is something quite fine about the whole thing. Thanks again Bob.

Well done Bob, nice to see some traditions still carried on. I'm old enough to remember some plowing going on (76), but more so seeing the Ragman's wagon, come by horse drawn, and the iceman when he delivered our ice for the icebox. I do not miss that beast, I was only 6-7 yrs old but had to empty the pan from under the icebox after it melted and drained out. and I don't think I ever made it to the door with out spilling some water on the floor. it was about 6inches deep, 2ftx4ft wide kinda heave for a young ladd like me. but we did what we had to do. thanks for the trip down memory lane!.

Hi Bob wonderfull video lovely horses. Would you happen to have plans ect on how to convert a tractor drag plow for horses like yours would appreciate any help and advice. Thanks George
@farmerbob95728 жыл бұрын
+Lynda Laird Hi Lynda, Somehow I missed your comment about plans to convert a tractor plow to a horse plow. As far as I know there is no plans. I was lucky enough to copy off of someone who converted his plow. You need to remove the tongue off the plow and hook on with a Clevis where the tongue was. This might need to be raised or lowered Depending on the draft point. The draft point is determined by running a straight line from a point on the on plow share to the draft point on the horse collar. There are books out there as to how this formula works. The tongue for the horses needs to be fastened to the plow wherever it works the best.
@farmerbob95728 жыл бұрын
+Lynda Laird I forgot to mention that the point of draft straight line must intersect the point where the Clevis is hooked on.

@farmerbob95725 жыл бұрын
A lot depends on the type of soil you are plowing. Two horses could have pulled your grandpas plow a longer of time with out resting. The rule is 2 horses for a one bottom and 3 horse for a 2 bottom. The secret of good plowing is to have more horses than you need. I agree with you about the family farm.

so soothing to watch! I loved my time with my drafters....I miss it all....some say the time it takes to unharness and brush them down is a lot of work compared to just parking the tractor and turning the key to off and going inside....the bond and interaction with the animals is a reward after the job is completed....let the animals cool down under a blanket if they have been sweating....Brush the horses down..... always take the chill off of the water before watering .... then I gave my drafters a nice hot bran mash....they loved it!!!!! especially in cool or cold weather....purchase wheat bran from a feed mill....( never give a horse or mule wheat....but wheat bran is ok)....put bran in a feed container and add very hot water to just a little water level above bran.....stir.....let stand until this very wet bran mash is throughly wet throughout with NO dry clumps....and when pleasently warm to your finger ...feed....I gave a gallon bucketfull to each horse! It's filling...warm...and tasty to them and prevents colic! wet...and warm...and never dry! feed when they are cooled down...watered and brushed....they will love you for it....its a great source of phosphorus which is needed in their diet!!!!!

Hi Farmer Bob, I would love to know why the third horse? I noticed he was not hooked directly to the plow. So impressive. thank you
@farmerbob95727 жыл бұрын
+Susan Maclean Thanks Susan for the comment. The third horse just makes it easier. For walk behind plow, you can get by with just two horses. With a riding plow, three horses are best. It's not enjoyable to plow when the horses are struggling. Someone once said that to enjoy plowing is to have more horses than you need. The two black horses are attached to the tongue as well as the plow. The tongue is for steering as well as holding back. The tongue is not involved in pulling. The third horse is attached to the plow only. I hope this helps a little.
@susanmaclean23137 жыл бұрын
WOW thanks sir! I was watching other videos with 2 horses and a single plow and U can see how they are working hard.....one more question sir: I saw some plows that are single sided and some that are double sided (going into the same furrow? Am I seeing that correctly?
@farmerbob95727 жыл бұрын
+ySusan Maclean Yes, they are called 2 way plows. You go back up the same furrow that came down on. This way you don't end up with a dead furrow. (the place where two furrows come together). A dead furrow is hard to fill in and crops don't do as well in this area. A two way plow is also good on a hill side when you want to throw the soil up hill since the soil is always washing down hill.

Hey Mr Bob, how do you like your New England D Ring Harness on ur perchs vs the standard western style harness like on ur Belgian/Morgan cross???? Just wondering if you could give me some opinions on the differences and likes/dislikes of each kind. Thx in advance and have a good day.
@farmerbob95728 жыл бұрын
+. flyboyzach07 Hi Flyboy, I'm not an expert on harness but I will tell you what I think I know. The crossbred horse Yogi, harness is the same as the Percherons except the harness on the Percherons require a small neck yoke and Yogi's harness does not. The design on Yogi's will have a lot less back and forth sway of the tongue, which is a good thing. The English people prefer Yogi's design and the Amish people prefer the little neck yokes just because it looks less modern. I think the D Ring harness is designed so the girth takes all the back and forth movement of tongue and nothing on the collar. This works well if adjusted properly with is tricky to do. Hope this helps. Let me know if you receive this, my computer is acting up.

Thank you so much for sharing this video ! Where I can buy a plow like that ?

+João Pedro Magalhães Thank you. This is international little genius tractor plow. It is converted for horses, you can find them at farm machinery sales. Also you may find them on the Internet. Good luck.

Farmer Bob. Thanks for answering my question. I wonder if you have a design of the structure of this plow or a manual that shows the parts of this structure or if you know a site that shows in detail such structure?
@farmerbob95727 жыл бұрын
+João Pedro Magalhães You can search the internet under "little genius tractor plow" There you can see a lot of photos of this plow. Also you can search "owner manual for little genius tractor plow" and a list of several companies who sell this manual. The plow has a draw bar to hook the horses to. You need another draw bar above it for the tongue. See my video, it shows it pretty well. I must tell you that this plow will not lift out of the ground with out me getting off at both ends of the field. You shouldn't consider converting unless you wouldn't mind this.

So, you're not going to wash them down and dry them and curry them? I was thinking it looked like two draft horses and a riding horse! I would have thought with three horses, it would be a two bottom plow! It's best not to work them too hard! They got the job done! It's sometime hard to believe that dad grew up plowing with horses, a one bottom walking plow!

The more horses, the more fun to plow. The one horse is Belgium Morgan cross bred. Thanks for the comment.

The banjo was nice but I would have appreciated hearing the plow turning the soil.
@richbusche43213 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree the banjo music was nice but, having a farm background as I do and helping my grandpa with the horse chores I missed hearing the clump clump clump of their feet and their occasional snorts.
@Diddley-js6lf5 жыл бұрын
Do you start them off on smaller plowing rows on the very first day of the season, i think unless they work during the winter months they would be better shape after working into the plowing for the season.
@farmerbob95725 жыл бұрын
One can break them in slowly until they get in shape, give them some rests a couple of times on the long rows.

Hey Bob, this is one the greatest videos I ever watch in KZbin, you have amazing horses, I love horses. Actually I'm looking for a plow, that plow the one you had, where can I buy the plow and horse straps.
@farmerbob95728 жыл бұрын
+Carlo Ayala Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The best thing to do is find a harness shop in your area. Then they can direct you where you can buy a plow. The plow in this video is a converted tractor plow. They might know where you can get one of those.

Farmer Bob thank you, but I don't think I have any harness shop in my area, I live in Washington DC, I trying to by this thing to send it, to my country I'm trying to rebuild my grandfather farm. He pass a way 9 years ago. And farm died too.

+Carlo Ayala Pioneer equipment inc. have all kinds of horse equipment. They also have harness. Call them at 888-857-6340 and they will direct you to a dealer nearest to you.
+KAI VANUACA This a tractor plow that has not been made for at least 50 years. In the U.S. They still sell the at machinery sales. Sometimes you can find one converted to a horse plow. Then you can copy from that.

How deep do you set the plow ?? Retired Larry
@farmerbob95726 жыл бұрын
+Larry Keesee Six to seven inches
@farmerbob95726 жыл бұрын
+Larry Keesee The rule of thumb is to plow half as deep as the plow is wide. So a 12 inch plow would plow 6 inches deep with.
