From the rider: Alice is now 27 and still going strong . We were out for our daily ride. She heard something turn to look and the ground was soft and gave out from her right hind leg and she fell into the ditch, pinning my leg under her for 30 plus minutes . she could not get up, as her legs where higher than her body . There was a few tense moment as she tried to get up and I couldn't get out from under her . With a lot of help from everyone they pull me out. The fire department and the Vet got Alice out. Alice is fine and ready to go. I've had Alice for 22 years and we will have more riding days to come

A little explanation would make this more meaningful. What happened here? What was the horse's problem? From what did it need to be rescued? And so on.

I don't know how the horse got into the ditch, but it is called "casting" when a horse's legs are too close to a wall or railing or in this case a rise in the earth -- they can't get up. The longer a horse is laying down, the worse it is for the internal organs and for the circulation in the legs -- it can kill them. They dragged it into an open area so it has the space to get up...no earth wall like the ditch wall to get in the way. So, the horse fell or something, then cast because it had no room to get its legs underneath to lift itself.
