I've had my quarterhorse 1yr old filly for 4months now and I've trained her using you methods Steve. She is full of the good stuff. No bad habits to start and no bad habits currently. The level of respect and gentlness observed between us is increadible. I'm walking her off the property evwry morning so she experiences light traffic and everyday situations. I consider her 95% halter trained, but everything I do with her I do with quality! We repeat things until we can do them gracefully. Your voice runs through my head everyday when I work with her. Thank you very much💚

Poor little fellow! It’s a shame that he’s had so much trauma so early in life. When I bought my boy, I got given the option on how we were going to go about weaning, because I bought him at his mother’s side, and I asked that the foal be kept with her till he was six months old, and then be taken away with one of his pasture mates that was another foal the same age. She could then be kept as a weaning buddy for him until he was no longer anxious. When I brought my boy home, I had a older gelding that I knew was very good with young horses, and he was given the task of being the babysitter for the foal when Captain finally came home. To this day, the horse that was Captain‘s babysitter and he are very close friends. The breeder and I also began working with Captain and his mother to teach Captain to be handled with a halter and lead rope, and to be loaded onto a trailer so that he could be taken to my home eventually, but he was trailered initially with his mother so that it would not be as stressful a situation, and after he had some time being trailered, then when he got brought home with another young horse that was used to going places and could be a calming influence when he was being taken to my farm.

Sadly, there are a lot of foals that are basically thrown away to create nurse mares for valuable mares’ offspring. The breeder doesn’t want a valuable mare to waste time raising a foal when she could be breeding another one…

I do like this little guy! Most young horse colts are mouthy and often try to get a little nip in here and there, but he was very well behaved that way. No striking or kicking either. Very smart, picked things up quickly. I think he's hungry to learn--Jenny, you did very well in choosing him! I think he's going to be a great little riding horse. Thank you for helping him, Steve!

I don’t have a horse. I had some small experience when on holiday as a child and I loved it. I do however have a dog and the idea of pressure and release has been useful to us (she applies pressure to me by huffing and she releases when I do what she wants - walk, open the door, food etc. 🙂). It does work the other way round as well from time to time 😁. Seriously though, it’s delightful to see how effective gentle persuasion is with even some very troubled animals. The more of your videos I watch, the more I realise how much skill, intelligence and concentration you put into your work. I can see you need to tune out in order to tune in to the horse. I hope you will be able to get one of those things that stop wind noise (I think they’re called a “dead cat”), and that you can find a way to have the picture display in landscape mode. All the best and I look forward to more videos - nearly forgot, I do like to view of the countryside and the narration as you drive through. Thanks 🌺

Hey Steve. I know this video has been out awhile, but I just found your channel a month or two ago. One thing I noticed with this colt, if you watch it back, early on in the video you walked around him for something and after doing a couple sidesteps he disengaged. So by the time you intentionally disengaged him, he had already done it for you once. I definitely notice more of the little cues now after watching a couple dozen of your videos. Keep up the great work!

Foals are born knowing how to stand up, nurse, and to be able to run in an hour, usually. You can teach so much to them that is your foundation to when you belly over, then mount, dismount and then ride long before any of that happens. You build a good foundation for your house, why wouldn't or shouldn't you build a solid foundation starting them from foals?? What you put in there stays there, if done correctly. (Sorry Steve, don't mean you :-D) I've never had the opportunity to have much to do with horses but love watching and learning about their personalities, reactions and emotional needs. That little horse is so very responsive, you can see him puzzling out what Steve is doing and why - especially tapping his side with that stick. "Hey! Stop it! Why you doing that? I don't like it.... But you must mean something by it, so if I can work out what that is..."
