Horse wins race without rider - Ruidoso Downs NM

All the extra weight was just slowing him down. Nothing like a horse running like the wind by his lonesome- too bad he won't be getting a trophy. Thankfully the jockey is all right after the fall- though we're not sure how this is going to look on his track record.

That's a good horse. You can tell he's competitive. He dug in when the other horse headed him. Thoroughbreds have running in their blood. There's a picture of a horse named 'Please Me' crossing the finish line without his rider, George Woolf, who had fallen off and died earlier in the race. He was the jockey that rode Seabiscuit in the match race with War Admiral in 1938. Greatest jockey of his time. He died in a midweek minor race in 1946, I think it was. Woolf had been battling diabetes for a long time. He wasn't feeling well before the race, but a friend asked him to ride. They suspect he passed out and fell off. He was only 36 years old.

Why would he whip the other horse? A horse without a jockey is disqualified so the 2nd person was in the LEAD to win...he was whipping his horse because he dint wanted the other jockey to come ahead of him and he was using this jockeyless horse too to his advantage as his horse would run fast seeing the other horse next to him.

I would like to say that this video leaves me confused... Okay, the horse continues the race, but that doesn’t mean he’s really having fun. Racing horses are trained for years to win, so when they arrive at the racecourse their only thought is to be in the lead. This horse won because he didn’t have 60 kg on his back or anyone to hold him, but that’s the problem. The jockey is not useless, he is there to place the horse and maintain it so that the horse gives all his energy on the last straight line. There is already a lot of horse accidents with a jockey, so imagine without. "Riding is an individual sport that is practiced by two." The horse has strength and will, the rider has direction and maintains it. Alone, the horse can make a bad move and hurt itself.

One of the best races I ever saw was in Raton New Mexico in late July 1983... Someone had not secured the bridle properly, and it came off less than a hundred yards out of the gate. The jockey grabbed the horse's mane, stayed on him, and won the race!!!

The rider does need to be mounted on the horse when passing the finish line for a win to be recorded. The riderless horse had about 100 pounds less to carry round the track. As herd animals, horses prefer to be with their buddies so odds were it was going to run with them anyway. Hope the jockey was okay.
