When I was 15 I got a unbroken Arabian horse from a auction, at this auction I didn't notice horses in bad conditions but maybe the best comes out first, also this was over 20 years ago. I loved this horse! I trained her to ride, though she didn't ever take to a saddle. One day she got her leg caught on something and fell hard, she ended up breaking her leg. We had to help her get into a stall so she could get her leg wrapped up and she wouldn't be able to move too much during her first few weeks of heeling. After a few days she fell down (don't know how), we tried for hours trying to get her off her back but failed. My grandpa told me she was suffering and had to be put down, it was a truly sad day

I understand that there are many people who are completely against the idea of euthanizing (and I'm against it too in many circumstances), but I have to say, I respect that HPHS doesn't keep a suffering animal alive just for the sake of making us humans feel better. If an animal needs to be on a cocktail of medications (which I assume get highly costly) just to not feel pain and function normally, I'd personally much rather they be given a peaceful send-off (while making space for potential new rescues). Of course in an ideal world, they would never be neglected, abused, and abandoned in the first place but I think these rescuers are doing the best they can.

I absolutely LOVE that you're doing ninja auction raids. The pissed off kill buyers are probably some of the jerks spreading lies on FB about you. I'm glad you're eating into their reprehensible profits. That sweet old mule brought me to tears. To have lived so long, means someone loved and cared for her. How she could have ended up in the situation she was in, suffering so badly, it's just heartbreaking. I can't imagine the strength it takes to deal with what you have to. Hugs to you all. Thank you.

Not enough saved, thousands going to slaughterhouses, shipping to Germany Mexico Canada UK Japan EU Italy France Denmark for human meat pet products. Many were pets, loved, served their owners . Shameful unconsciousness of owners. Vets should be ashamed of prices and refusing treatment for payments. See Florida SPCA horse slaughter page section

Yes, sometimes it's time to let an animal go. This is because they are animals and prolonging their suffering is without purpose. With people, the value of their life even in suffering is irreducible and some people need to hear that message! We mustn't apply the same ethical standards to humans as to animals whose "quality of life" has waned. Euthanasia may be the "last act of kindness" to a horse with degeration of the coffin bone, but it's correctly termed murder (or suicide) when committed against a person. The difference is human dignity and the merit of human acts including practice of the virtue of fortitude in the last difficulties of life. Charity toward human beings includes palliative care but also support for life until natural death. Yes this is a heavy topic but the greatness of the human spirit is that we are able to rise to the occasion of patience in suffering, or faithful care for the sick and elderly.
@mel720
@mel720 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElizabethDMadison There are cases of human euthanasia, and I do believe it's correctly termed euthanasia. If someone has a terminal illness where the end of the disease means prolonged intractable pain, or loss of function of the body and/or mind, I think that the person enduring the illness having the right to define their end of life care, even if that should mean euthanasia of some form is a part of that, I don't see why the human should have to suffer through something we wouldn't expect our animals to go through. It happens all over our country now in a mild form where the patient is actively dying and doctors order morphine "titrated to comfort." It ends the pain and suppresses breathing and the body is able to relax which hastens death. Some countries, and even states in the U.S. are now allowing a more overt form of euthanasia. It's not always murder or suicide. It's a choice to retain dignity and exit this world on one's own terms. I do agree with you that sometimes it's best, and what are we but are apex animals? Be well! ❤
@ElizabethDMadison
@ElizabethDMadison 2 жыл бұрын
@@mel720 Your comment proves why I needed to comment on this subject. Taking an action purposed to end one's life is always wrong (suicide). End of life decisions or end of life pre-planning should not be suicide-minded. End of life reasonable care including palliative care that isn't intended to kill but has a risk of shortening life is not suicide. Deciding for another person like you would for a pet "let's put them down, they're suffering" is murder, not compassion. Be with them, give them a drink of water, relieve their pain. At some point each of us will die, but that moment should arrive in its own time.
@mel720
@mel720 2 жыл бұрын
@@ElizabethDMadison We will agree to disagree. I read your comment and just thought you're plain wrong. I have chronic pain. My disease is not terminal, but knowing how terrible my pain is sometimes, and how much worse it can be with some terminal conditions where pain wracks the body ceaselessly, I might have a different perspective. Euthanasia simply means "good death." You're talking of relief of pain, it can hasten death. The death comes easier and sooner than it would otherwise. I believe you're splitting hairs. There but for the grace of God go I. You really shouldn't judge what you don't understand, and until you walk a mile you can't. I may not have a full understanding, but I have a fuller understanding and I would never judge someone else who would like to ease out of this world relaxed, rather than contracted in pain and screaming for mercy. There was a time we could not do much, but we can now. If someone wants to consciously make decisions about what their end will entail, it's not for me or you, for that matter, to say that they shouldn't have that right. I read your comment for what it was, a judgement on what is or isn't okay for someone else... and I absolutely 💯 disagree. That's okay. We both face that unknown crossing and I would never wish pain, or torture, or torment on you or anyone else. I hope that when the time comes for you, it's peaceful and easy. That's the same thing I would wish for anyone. Natural disease states don't always allow for that as they progress. Some are nasty, and that isn't a strong enough word. I'm not saying that it's my place to make decisions for others, neither is it yours, and that's the point. I just feel you judge much too harshly what you can't understand. I meant it when I said be well.
@ElizabethDMadison
@ElizabethDMadison 2 жыл бұрын
@@mel720 Suffering is a part of life. It's not an unusual part of life either, even though it is so truly difficult. Being patient under its burdens is virtue. I absolutely do not agree suicide is the answer. It's a failure and insofar as someone freely chose it (as opposed to mental illness), they are gravely morally at fault. I warmly hope you'll have loving people around you who support and care for you and value your life and let you know it.

Watching minis unload off of a trailer is a hoot! They always jump as if they're trying to clear the moon. I love seeing Keith with the animals. His compassion for them touches me... maybe it's because we don't see him with the horses once they're back at the shelter. Either way, his gentle, kind nature towards them makes my heart happy. On top of that, Cory dealing with the animals is also such a pleasure to see - he truly knows and loves these creatures and it is obvious. The way he was there to help the old mule was touching, while at the same time he was so tender to the paint horse (and all the others, I'm sure). Love, love, LOVE Jenna, the new vet tech. How do people take such terrible care of their animals? Some of these could've been saved had their owners taken them to the vet. My heart goes out to the paint horse and the 40 yo donkey. Who keeps a donkey for 40 years and then dumps it into a kill auction. They should've allowed her a good life for the time she had and then thank her for being a good donkey so she can leave to go to a better life in heaven. So cruel.

How can you handle seeing these poor broken horses that are so sweet and kind,I cry and cry each time I watch even the same episodes repeatedly. WHY would these monsters spend the money to transport a broken horse, when they could pay the same to have them kindly euthanized and kindly interred? My brother is a Vet and he usually takes my dear old rescue dogs out to his farm property to bury for me. A couple of times I had to have him take care of them when I could not find a way to travel the 30 miles each way to his office. I actually convinced someone to drive me to his clinic with a dog that I rescued JUST to get her out of the dang shelter as I was watching her go downhill daily begging me with her eyes. I will tell her known story another day. Heartbreaking at least I/we had the chance to shower her with love before she had to be given release.

Cory and Jenna work great together! Their love for the animals is so great to see. I am an OLD TIMER who grew up on a farm, with horses. My dad would have “ had a fit” if he was still around to see the horrific condition some of these animals are in. You all do such a great job of caring for these rescued animals 👍🏽‼️♥️ I just love each one of you ♥️‼️😊

Isn't there something that could be done at the auction, to prevent people from retaliation and letting animals out? I would think the auction could be liable, if horses got out and caused an accident, not to mention the horses themselves. While in their facility, you would think they would make sure everything is kept secure overnight. Maybe talking to the auction owner might help? It doesn't look too good on them, if they allow this to happen! I only say this, because it has happened before. It sounds like the covert rescues may be the way to go, if it helps to keep the auction cost down, and you can hopefully rescue even more! Good going! Feel better Tawnee!

Right? Why keep an animal for that long just to send it to auction and potentially to slaughter? Perhaps the owners were too old or maybe didn't have any money to feed or keep it any longer. Any other reason isn't really an excuse though. Just terrible.
@ohthelovelypoems
@ohthelovelypoems 2 жыл бұрын
@@tisbutascratch2045 I sure don't understand it, I would eat oatmeal all week, miss meals, or sell personal belongings to take care of my rescued dogs if I had to. Too many people treat their animals like the rest of their inert possessions that they get tired of or just don't want to put money out for any more. If you take an animal in then you are entering into a commitment that should last the life of that animal and you do for them according to their needs. That poor horse with the hoof coming off was 😢 super sad, but thanks to you she knew love & care, with a peaceful transition.

I have a 33 year old rescue in my barn right now. He was a tenant on another property that I own. One day I showed up to do something on the property unrelated to the horse and could smell his hooves, they were so infected. I took his blanket off and he was bones; literally skin and bones and a huge hoof abscess that wasn't being treated. You bet your ass I went home, got the horse trailer, and hauled him back to my own farm. His owner didn't make much fuss about it so that told me how much she cared about him. He was 30 at the time but looked 40. Now he looks his age with good nutrition, proper dental care, hoof care, and carrots sliced into sticks every night because he can't chew whole carrots anymore. I mean, why have a horse if you aren't going to take care of them, ESPECIALLY when they're elderly and have given so much of themselves? This one was once a star polo horse for Stanford University and once he blew a tendon, they sold him to the equine unit at UC Davis to be used for medical research. I swear that that's the secret to his robust health. God knows what they did to him at UC Davis but he's cast-iron. Not terribly friendly but with his past, I'm not sure I'd be friendly in his case, either. I'm just glad he's in my life even though it's a pain having a horse again. I decided to not have more horses once I developed fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis (degenerative arthritis) but when I saw him, I couldn't just look away. It would have been completely immoral and amoral to not have stepped in. He was so skeletal. Lots of good food and good supervision from a vet and the right nutrition and he's a whole new horse.

Hi ! I own a horse shelter and I would like to rescue more of them but I don't have enough place where we are at the moment and we don't find a good place with a lot of space but we are looking for this since summer. You guys, you live my dream. I'm in Canada and we have a lot of slaughter house... It's very sad... Everytime I look at your videos, I want to cry because I just want to help horses like you do. You are heroes and thank you for everything you're doing for them. 💕💕 My heart broke when I saw the "old lady" on the ground.... This was a lot for her... Her body can't take other things. Thank you for taking her, she don't die at slaughter with a lot of stress, pain and sadness.
