UC Berkeley and Durham University optometry scientists have discovered the reasons for the horizontal pupil shape of some animals' eyes
Full story: news.berkeley.e...
Video produced by Gordon Love, Durham University, in collaboration with UC Berkeley
New research led by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that the shape of some animals' pupils could reveal whether one is hunter or hunted.
An analysis of 214 species of land animals shows that a creature's ecological niche is a strong predictor of pupil shape. Species with pupils that are vertical slits are more likely to be ambush predators that are active both day and night. In contrast, those with horizontally elongated pupils are extremely likely to be plant-eating prey species with eyes on the sides of their heads.
The study, led by vision scientist Martin Banks, UC Berkeley professor of optometry, in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Durham University, presents a new hypothesis as to why pupils are shaped and oriented the way they are.

Our eyes do rotate! Look at your eyes in the mirror carefully and turn your head. It doesnt remain stationary, however.

Even more interesting, our eyes rotate slightly when you bend down, just like them. This proves that at one time, humans evolved from an animal that had its eyes on the side of its head

@@evancoberley2650 Another interesting fact is , we have a very small space in which we see things sharp ; if we saw our whole field of vision sharply we would have an overdose of information . Yet outside the point of fixation (peripheral vision) we still get information about moving things , on which one would immediately focus if needed.

@@evancoberley2650 интересный и неожиданный вывод. Но как быть с кошачьими и псовыми, у которых та же ситуация? И Вы думаете, мы бы не обнаружили черепа с глазами по бокам?

Human eyes don't rotate about an axis that runs through the centre of the pupil to the centre of the retina. Horses eyes can do that. Human eyes rotate about the other two eye axes. With head upright then the human eye rotation axes are the ear to ear horizontal axis & the top of the head to neck vertical axis. I'm just working on an example of how this causes a horse's visual experience to be different to that of a human & it's not easy to imagine it or explain it. Ah yes, a persons head tilting from upright to left or right 90°. Visual horizontals start lined up from ear to ear & after tilting the head 90° left or right visual horizontals end up being parallel to the top of head to chin axis. If a person's eyes worked like a horse's eyes then visual horizontals would remain parallel to the ear to ear axis during the 90° left or right head tilt process. For a horse the visual horizontals are always parallel with the heads nose to back of the head axis wether the nose is pointing forwards or downwards. Thus this horse specific eye rotation action coupled with the slot shaped pupils maximise equine horizontal panoramic vision. (Super Panorizon Vision ©®™✓)

How do the mechanisms work in the eye? Is it just "loose"? Is it heavier on the bottom to stay aligned?

Muscles & image position. So with people a similar thing is happening, while fixing their gaze on an object the eyes automatically swivel if the person's head is rotated left to right or up & down, the brain uses info from the image to control the eye movement.

Lol what is he talking about? human eyes do rotate. I figured it out years ago and even looked in my friends eyes and they do it too. if you want to see it, look at the eyes of smb while hi turn his head clockwise. watch and see! you can also see it in the mirror

How nice for Berkeley to give praise to God for His great designs of eyes. I agree atheists have blind faith to think eyes happened by chance.

They didn't happen by chance. They evolved in many separate & unconnected instances of evolutionary eye development. In biological terms they exist because various chemicals react to light levels & reacting to light levels & image based info is one particular & very important way an organism can act appropriately based on it's environment. All steps of evolutionary eye development have been identified & evidenced, the earliest version simply being a patch of skin cells that change function based on dark or light conditions.
