That physical position also creates a bit of a “wind tunnel” so they can more readily smell a predator approaching from behind, using the storm as cover.

I was always under the impression that horses lower their heads during a storm to keep their nostrils from filling with water...and choking them... But doing it to avoid lightning is a good reason, especially on the prairie.

Do wild horses have the luxury of a barn? Also even if there is a barn or other form of shelter offered horses don't always take it, we had 2 big open barns for our horses and they still chose to stand in the rain or seek shelter under a tree. Majority of the time the horses only used the barns to get out of the heat

They'd far rather stand in the open They are prey animals, so like how this comes naturally, standing in the open means they can hear any predators coming close. Under a tree or in a barn, they'll have the sound of the rain drops hitting hard, that'll cover up most sounds Plus, they can find natural shelter, even if its just a lower or higher spot in the field depending on weather Mine are on a hill, only natural shelter available, they'll stand at the very top during the heat as it catches the breeze, lower down the hill to get out the rain or cold wind(depends on time of year too)

Always saddens me to see animals without food, water, shelter from sleet, rain, hail, snow, wind, blazing sun. Owners always point to a scrub brush as adequate, or say animals throughout history are plains animals and because they're alive is proof that they are just fine. A simple lean-to, sheltering trees, wind break...Anything ! But no.... ☆
@staypower115 күн бұрын
Never use trees as shelter in a rainstorm. It is safer crouched down in a field.
@elysemcclure1484 күн бұрын
A shoddy shelter can be a deathtrap in high winds. Even if you have a secure barn, sometimes the horses will be less anxious and less likely to hurt themselves if they’re turned out into a large field where they can move and change positions in respond to the storm
@fjb49324 күн бұрын
@@elysemcclure148 True...we can Always find an excuse, if we look long and hard enough. Besides, we wouldn't treat humans that way, but animals aren't human, now are thet. Let'm suffer... ☆
@elysemcclure1484 күн бұрын
@@fjb4932 Animals can suffer when people anthropomorphize them too much and project their own feelings onto them. For example, say a chicken gets injured. Someone may think that the best thing to do would be to keep it in the coop with the other hens for comfort, since they’re flock animals and don’t like to be alone, but if you did that, the other chickens would peck it to death. You obviously don’t own horses. Of course horses should have access to food, water and proper shelter. But sometimes, truly understanding an animal’s psychology means doing things that might look “bad” to someone with no experience.
@averycheesypotato2 күн бұрын
I’m guessing there’s a shelter somewhere off-camera though? Horses just don’t like to use them for rain. They’ll go in if the sun is too much or may have the sense to hide from hail, but they’d rather be out in rain
@winterwoman12 күн бұрын

@emmakrell697420 күн бұрын
Hi there! I'm not sure if you have horses or not, but I do and my horses have a lovely shelter in their pasture that they can use to escape the weather, however I'd say about 65% of the time they do not as they like the feel of the cool rain during the heat, and it keeps the bugs away. I often look out to see my horses standing just like this in their own pasture, literally right beside their cozy shelter. I don't think it is kind to be making assumptions about ownership or care of these beautiful animals when you do not know the full story or have not personally talked to their owner. She obviously very much cares about her animals, shown by her other videos showing beautiful stalls complete with individual fans and even car scents to keep bugs away. Please be responsible and do your own research rather than reacting on first assumptions. Have a wonderful day.
