Horses pull semi-truck up icy hill in Mabel, Minnesota

An incredible display of power turns two southeastern Minnesota horses into internet sensations.
Belgian horses Prince and Molly helped pull a semi-truck with an empty trailer up an icy driveway in Mabel after it got stuck at the bottom more than a week ago.

@@janinecarson8380 True, but without the nature of Eophippus being what it is, and their particular physicality, they never could have produced the draft horses. A team of oxen couldn't do it. I find it a bit heartbreaking to see how horses will do whatever man asks them to do, no matter what, on a battlefield or on a racetrack; and they're often poorly treated, and sent to slaughter after their usefulness is ended. I hope this fellow keeps them until they're old and out to pasture. He treats them well, cares for them, I hope he keeps them beyond their use as draft horses. They make great riding horses, if you want to really improve your riding seat, just sit on one of those at the trot for an hour every day, on a longe line, with no stirrups.

This reminds me of my friends Percheron gelding Bob. One winter day my friend went off the edge of his icy driveway into the snow. It was about 2 feet deep and he was stuck pretty good. He harnessed Bob up and asked him to pull it out.. Bob was a character he would hit the ends of the traces and bounce back like they were rubber... he did this when he figured something was too heavy for him, or he didn’t really want to work at the time. So my friend went in the house to call for a tractor, leaving Bob hooked to the truck. looks out the window Ashe is on the phone and there goes Bob towards the barn pulling the truck... he got bored of standing there and decided to go home to the barn... he was a big goofy puppy in a huge horses body.

Reminds me of something that happened in front of my house out in the country years ago. Icy roads with deep snow offside. A 1 ton pickup slid into the ditch across from my house. The driver got out and walked on to the farm down the road from me. About a half hour later, he and the farmer come up the road on a John Deere. Hooked it up, pulled, and the back end of the tractor skewed right down into the ditch. Both men walked on back down the road. About an hour later, here they both come with a draft horse harnessed and dragging a heavy chain. First the horse pulled out the tractor, then it pulled out the truck. :D

They are amazing. When tractors came along in the Canadian west, the tractor companies would talk farmers into trading their horses for a tractor, and so many of them fell for it. The horses were then slaughtered by the tractor company, to speed up eliminating the competition. I hope they're all in hell now. We were better off with horse teams, farming would not have expanded so hugely, and we wouldn't be involved with China and global trade deals.

One of my friends and her husband have bred draft horses trained for farming for 4 decades. They always have buyers for them. Not too many people farming with horses any more, but it just makes so much sense for a small holding.

White Tiger in 1964 (i was 10 years old) the traschinng machine was stuck in the snow pulled by a tractors Lanz Bulldog in my home town(in Belguim,) my oncle hookked up to bloody good looking strong Brabbander Belguim draft horses, end thye pul the traching machinen out of the snow, to too the job in the next farm, i never going to forget this,

Back in the day I had a team.. and all you had to say in the yard was "Hey We have a LOAD" and they'd come up and stand to get harnessed. With that huge mass. I watched it and realized I was mumbling " come on my boys, come on my boys, Gee gee gee get in the snow.. come on my boys". They are not slaves nor are they robots. Until you work with a horse that big and strong, you'll never understand that they could kill you in an instance or just refuse to do anything, unless they loved you.

I haven't been around draft horses much for about 50 years now but can remember going out to get the cows for milking and have the horses walking up to me for a piece of sugar or a little petting on the face. the horses and my labs were always there when I needed a friend.

I logged with a Percheron and a Belgian, and we had a Clydesdale on the farm for hay hauling and sugaring. Great animals and fun. They lived to pull. Never got rich logging with horses, but made a living at the time doing something I loved.

Clydesdales are my favourite breed. I have one on the farm (he's around 17 hands) and ride occasionally and he's the sweetest horse I've known. They seem aware of their size and I don't have a problem with letting him hang out near the road even though children will sometimes pet him through the fence. He loves the attention and sometimes ignores me when I call him in favour of looking out for people to say hello to. 🤣

My dad pulled a school bus out of the ditch with a team of horses. The school bus was turning around on highway because it was snowed in . He backed up a bit to far and couldn’t make it out . Dad got the team out hooked on to the bus and pulled it back on to the road. Horse can pull lots if they have good traction

These big drafters have been bred since medieval times to carry or pull enormous weight. The 'knights of old' in suits of armor rode these horses. Bred for strength, stamina and to battle. People who own them today value them for showing, pleasure and work. This team was perfectly willing to do what was asked of them. Very cool

A great team that knows how to work together! If a horse is unable to pull the weight, they won't. They know their limit. I asked my horse to pull a log once and it was too heavy. He just side stepped back and forth but wouldn't pull after his first effort. On other logs, he pulled them easily and licked his lips and bobbed his head each time he successfully moved a log in place (horse language for happiness). I was building a log barn for him and he helped. Horses are amazing!😊

People like this annoy me honestly. The people sitting there watching this team of horses do this and the first thing they think is "how much you want for them?" Its like they see someone else have a good thing going for them and they just suddenly want to take it from themselves. Is it just me that feels irked by that. I worked on a dairy farm my final year of high school and when the snowblower broke down, we hitched up the team, towed the milk truck in a half mile long driveway, loaded it up and towed it back out to the highway. They didnt even break a sweat.

The tire is the key. Using a fore-cart the impact of the horses hitting the harness caused the fore cart to jump wildly back and forth. My Amish neighbor used his team on a fedex truck whose driver got his big truck stuck in my driveway. This driver should be demoted to load and unload only. He had no idea how to drive in winter conditions. He was doing everything wrong. He was putting my firewood in front of his tires. He was on a hill that has an added angle to the side. Every step uphill took him sideways too. It was the horses that finally did it...each horse has one horse power. But they can pull like crazy.

I know a little about driving and pulling but never seen a tire on a chain between the horses and the rig they are pulling. What was the purpose?

@@MorganJServices the tire stretches when the chain is tight. Without a tire, the forecart is jumping in the air or bouncing. The operator of the horses was on top of the forecart and he was bouncing along with the cart. If he had slow responses he would have been killed. The truck was a big fedex box truck. Nowhere near the weight of the tractor trailer AND those horses were pulling on an icy road. Idk if the horses were shod. My experience was in a plowed and frozen field and the horses were not shod. Shod means horse shoes.

Skid logs, drag wagons and sleighs around, pull out tree stumps, they even go hooked to a friends old barn to tear it down and make way for the new one! Gentle, wise, playful giants! Don't forget cats. Cats are just. as faithful as dogs. So many stories of cats protecting their humans. Like the one that was on the news a cat ran off a dog that was attacking a toddler writing on a Kitty bike in the front drive of where he lived. It was redone and a lot of people now know the story by the title of Homeward Bound. But the original story of Homeward Bound was based off of a book called The Incredible Journey. Two dogs and cat make their way through Canadian wilderness. Cats are badass creatures. When cats came over from Africa science shows us that the cat killed off 40 species of dog. Back in the early 70's Myself and a friend did some selective logging in northern Maine. After stupidly running my 65 Ford Galaxy off the road, we hitched up our beautiful belgian/percheron horse and proceeded to pull that car out of the snow filled ditch like it was nothing. After a hard days work, my buddy myself and our horse all enjoyed a beer each at the end of the day. Great memories.

I had the same thing happen when I was driving truck in the mid 90's. Horse cave, KY an Amish family had a small sawmill, it was light snow and ice, light load on the deck and couldn't get up the hill, kinda like this video, went and got the neighbor and his team. Pulled my 379 Pete and 45ft flatbed up the hill, it was an amazing thing as they didnt seem to work too hard doing it. ! Yes, I believe that his horses love him!

@David Erickson I had a big fedex truck stuck in my yard and my Amish neighbor brought down two drafts and a forecart. Once hooked to the truck and asked to go the forecart hit the end of the chain and jumped to be inline with the truck. I was sure someone would get hurt. He kept hitting that chain and jumping back and forth. A tire would have eased the breakaway point. We were also dealing with a driver who barely spoke English, he also seemed to not know how to drive. He had piled firewood in front of his tires???........after that torture went on ten or fifteen minutes he brought more horses down and eventually fox fedex out of my driveway and his corn field. Three horsepower beat a 450 horsepower up a slippery slope of half frozen mud and gravel.

My grandma has 4 Belgian drafts. The same type in the video. They are really strong and super sweet. The biggest one is Charlie, which he stands about 25 hands tall, which is equal to about 9.5 feet, when he is standing fully upright from his feet to his ears and weighs close to 2 tons. The other 3 names are Willow, Major, and Mack.

Out in the alflafa fields outside my town theres a farmer that only uses draft teams to do all the , cutting, turning, baling and picking up the bales. Its a beautiful thing to watch and both sides of the roads are people parked watching when hes out there, word gets out fast and they come from alll over, the most beautiful six team, dun color with cream manes and tails, and he always uses show harness, he is very very proud and Im sure he loves everyone watching.

Our team regularly towed automobiles to our house from the highway. Mules and horses are fantastic machines and they're smart too.
