If the cops want something from me, they have to get me first (escape from the police is not illegal in Germany :)). For me, this is a kind of self-defense against a state that is out of control. I ride and observe the 20mph zones however even when adopting position 2 in my lane am overtaken by 50% of cars and even the Tour de France brigade. Even serving police think this is ridiculous. I totally agree that some riding I see, like driving, is appalling but don't believe this is the answer. Then again it does create cash and continues the war on the motorist.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s very frustrating being overtaken by a push bike. I came through Llanymynech today and they have the 20 mph signs ready to go. It’s quite interesting really, as half of the village is in England and the other in Wales. Does this mean we are now governed by Mr Drakeford. I wonder who is paying for the changes in legislation and signage.

Ridden since 1974 so 50 years now! Wow never totted that up before Ive always renovated bikes so lucky to have a collection and also have a place in the Isle of Man so I ride a few contrasts. My GSXR 1000 K5 is only at home in the Island. With consideration and respect for others the open limits can be used and quite frankly its now a strange feeling. Back in the UK Ive a 1970 Honda CB750 K0 that Ive had for 35 years and that is now almost perfect for UK roads although it prefers 90 mph but with its 4 pipes and big bars trickles along making a pleasant sound. The one bike that creates the least kerfuffel allowing you to chill out is my Zero SRF electric, I actually love the silence. But having been T boned as Im doing 15mph! 6 weeks in hospital with a double compound fracture to my left leg and probably 2 years recovery pretty much says it all for me. I slowed from 40 to 15 in a 60 to go passed a van waiting to pull out and they still floored it! Speed limits would do nothing, unobservant drivers texting is my biggest problem in the UK. Not in the Isle of Man, no one texts as you will get caught its a cultural no no , people pull over to text, its noticeable people are more observant, the riding is safer. Unfortunately this one example of a country still free from nanny state mentality where the laws are based on mutual respect will probably make little difference to Europe/UK.

I saw this and googled the Horse Shoe Pass and motorcycle rider casualties. I think there were 3 separate mentions of bikers being airlifted to hospital on the first page. This is why most of Derbyshire had the national speed limit roads reduced. When you are out and about in these areas look at the holes in the hedges and dry stone walls often caused by bikers whose ambition outstripped their ability. It’s a sad fact but bikers have ruined their own pass time. I speak as a life long motorbike rider who was taken out by a car failing to give way at cross roads and putting me in hospital for three months via air ambulance.I watch the racing on telly now. Stay safe everyone.

The reason for the reduced speed limit is to make bikers , who we are told to think about, think, and stop killing themselves all over our lovely countryside! If every biker slowed just a bit, more would live to an older age and, and be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside. As an ex biker and now car driver I despair over the number of times I see bikers with complete disregard for the rules and other road users just do ‘their thing’. They think because their vehicle is more nimble and able to manoeuvre quicker that it doesn’t matter what others think, it seems that the attitudes of a lot of road users , now consider themselves to be invulnerable and above the law! This includes a lot of car drivers who think because they have indicated this gives them the right to just pull into lines of traffic or change lanes with impunity. I’m glad that I am coming to the end of my driving career because with the lack of police patrols there seems to be anarchy taking over!

Sadly, this nonsense is likely to become much more common. So called “progressive” councils across Europe embrace the principles of Scandinavian road safety organisation Vision Zero (nothing to do with “Net Zero”) whose aim is in their name, zero road deaths, which in their view can only be achieved by dramatically slashing speed limits (and alarmingly for us, discouraging and ultimately phasing out, motorcycle use). If you’ve riding in Europe in recent years you will have noticed that many 90kph roads are now 70 and 50 and the national speed limits in France and Belgium have been reduced from 90 to 80 kph. Labour and the Lib Dem’s are signed up to Vision Zero and their councils fully embrace it. The 20mph blanket urban limit in Wales is also inspired by VZ. Since May’s local elections are likely to result in a lot more councils being run by progressives, unfortunately a lot more national limits are going to be 40mph roads in the next few years. It’s crazy, but they’re not listening and are determined to do it. It’s not helped by people using noisy exhausts and being too public about breaking the existing limit, as complaints by locals about “noisy, speeding bikers” (and drivers) are giving councils the excuse to do what they’ve done on the Hordeshoe (and incidentally the scenic B500 in the Black Forest in Germany which is now 50kph). Stealth is definitely the way to go.

It's a shame but it's the world we live in today, to many idiot's out on the roads & not justice bikers . Seems like alot of road user's have forgotten how to drive / ride . The days of enjoyable biking is few & far between. And don't get me started on load exhausts .

40 mph is fair for the road conditions. If you want to speed better look somewhere else. At that speed now you really can appreciate the landscape.

It’s getting quite ridiculous? These modern machines are designed to go quickly, and emit less pollutants, but, making them go slower, increases the emissions. And it’s all so utterly pointless, in the first place? It’s big brother!

Come on all the bikers looking at this know, in their hearts, this is about speeding!. Mixture of "kids" and middle-aged men on superbikes tearing around thinking it's the Isle of Man TT track. It's the same between devils bridge and any of the connecting roads to Lancaster .... we have only got our fellow brother bikers to blame .... we are a minority that isn't particularly liked!
