In this video, I'll show you how I prune the horsetail reed plants Im growing and propagating. I'll also show how I harvest the side branches to create a new plant.

I have read that these grow crazy fast like weeds.. I'm planning to use it in aquarium.. For moderate growth (not fast growth), can we use pure sand as substrate.. or using soil+sand or compost+sand mix is better option..

Did you use it? I’m thinking the same thing.

From my experience they are not picky and will grow in different substrates

Hi, can the Horsetail plants be grown in just straight water? Thank you.
@amethystearth88873 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I have not tried that myself, but have seen people using in garden ponds. If I were to try it, I would put a bunch in a small pot or biodegradable bag weighted down with rocks. Perhaps Ill try that and make a video on it. Would be interesting! Thanks for your question!

@@amethystearth8887 Hi there, I recently purchased equisetum for my mini sytrofoam pond. I plan to submerge the pot in the pond. Should i have drainage holes in the pot or not?

do they need full sunlight?
@amethystearth88873 жыл бұрын
They do not need full sunlight. I have some that get very little direct sun and others that get full sun most of the day. They are very hardy.

This doesn’t works, I’ve been trying multiple times in commercial sizes. these plants easily shock but can slowly spread anywhere even deep . So far there’s no propagating of this plant. All that shootings will dry and die no matter what. Even with roots
@kilowatt69672 ай бұрын
Sorry that hasn’t worked for you. Some of the offshoots will die. I plant about 2x as many as I want in pot so they’ll be plenty. You could maybe try root hormone to see if that helps.

The best thing I like about KZbin videos are the inaccuracies I'll just be concise, Horsetail is a pond (water) plant that is native to Egypt and grow abundantly in the Nile. If you potted the plant or put it in the ground it really doesn't matter, you have to keep it moist. It does extremely well though during drought seasons. The house I grew up in had a huge island of Horsetail and it was beautiful. We didn't have to do anything special in fact just regular watering as you would any other plant. And all this pruning and pulling off of the side shoots, save that for your roses, you can forget all that just leave the plant alone it will do fine. Horsetail has been around since prehistoric times they've found fossilized stems. I'm positive back in the day no one was around to fuss with it.

@@michaelhayko2904 thank you for bringing that up. i have a large square "mother" planter like 20 feet by 5 feet of this horsetail in it. it does fine and shooting left and right under and outside of the planter without any watering but i recently noticed it does well when watering it daily. it would grow taller and thicker. as far as propagating it i find cutting it into smaller piece of large piece and leave it in a container until it roots. then u have to transplant it into a seedling trays that i have to babysit it because its easily too moist and rot the roots or one day or dry potting mix then the root would die. so far the process is only about 30% successfully rate imo. its better than nothing before. why do I want to propagating more and faster? because i want to sell them and have more of them. it takes like months to get it from couple inches to 6". but from shoots it grow quicker so thats probably why they "spread" quickly and yes i did try to pull the roots and grow it but they either dry too fast or shock too fast or it doesn't producing shoots enough like one 12" root only have one or two shoots. in FLorida US. there only two people around here have this plant and that's me and the other place so this is a pretty rare plant and which is why i want to more of this plant around my property.

Hi Michael! Looks like we both have an appreciation for the horsetail plant! My video is just about my experience with the plant, how I upkeep/prune the ones Im growing to propagate. Im just sharing just my personal experience and process. I certainly dont intend to state inaccuracies and appreciate the feedback. As far as where the plant is native to, my understanding is it's native to the Northern hemisphere (North America, Asia, Europe). Ive not seen that it's just native to Egypt, but have no problem being corrected.. Now I have read that the equisetum arvense variety may be more common along the Nile. In regards to the pruning, Im just showing what Ive found works for me over the last 4 years Ive been growing it. I pull the side shoots off of my "propagating" plants (ones I dont have in landscaping) to create more plants. I also pull them off of my landscaped horsetail because they weigh down the shoot and it eventually falls over and doesn't look so great. Thats just my preference, it certainly doesn't have to be done. I do trim dead shoots back because Ive found it helps the new growth grow faster and for my landscaped pots, I just like to remove the dead shoots for aesthetics. In regards to watering versus not, moist/dry soil, what Ive found is it depends on where the plant is located. If in full sun, mine definitely needs more water/moisture and if not enough they will die. On the other hand, I have some pots that never get direct sun and rarely need water. The soil is very dry and they do great. I live in the south with a lot of humidity so Im sure that needs to be taken into consideration as well. I enjoy the horsetail plant just you and @derpherppington! Thanks!

Hi @derpherppington! I too was looking to grow and sell which is why I started propagated the plant. I watched a ton of videos trying to learn different ways to propagate, such as cutting the mature shoots into pieces and planting those, pulling the offshoots to create a new plant, etc... I'll share with you what Ive learned from my personal experience of propagating. Cutting the shoot into pieces and planting was the lowest yield for me so I dont use that method. The offshoots will take but are delicate and I usually plant twice as many as I want b/c many dont survive. They take a lot of babysitting and TLC. To me, those are long game propagations b/c those offshoots dont end up becoming mature stalks. It's when they root and form new stalks that are hardy and regular size from ground up that you'll get a new plant, but it takes a while. Believe it or not, the quickest way Ive been able to propagate is pulling mature stems from the ground (I have a lot of rogue horsetail) or pots and within about 4 weeks theres new hardy growth. It grows so fast I can hardly keep up with it. I just harvested a good bit and having it drying now to process into powder form. Going to experiment with tea, serums and oils. When you say you tried pulling the roots, are you pulling the shoots with roots attached and replanting? Im happy to try to help if I can! Thanks!
