Hello there and thanks! I'm spending most of my time on the trails so I'm not here as often as I'd like. Have a good day :)

Hi Tim! It's always to watch your hand drill magic. I'm still practicing to reliably make notchless embers. One of my scouts pulled it off a couple of weeks ago! I have some ideas that I hope to try eventually. Yes, earlier this year I used a goldenrod stalk to make a very small bow drill set. Goldenrod and horseweed are kissing cousins so if one will work the other will as well. In my neck of the woods horseweed just isn't as common as goldenrod. I used a single goldenrod stalk and cut my fireboard and spindles from it. Since the spindle and fireboard were the same diameter I kept getting blowouts. To remedy that I tied two bits of the stalk together to make a compound fireboard. That worked like a charm! Here's a link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKvCqJyMrqd6bsUsi=3hOSSYDKnwVCQohE I'm going to be in the land of arches this weekend, climbing the Via Feratta with southeast mountain guides. Wish me luck!

Hey Brad! Good to hear from you friend. I thought I remembered you doing something like that so I'm not surprised. You're pretty thorough when it comes to experimenting with the plants. It's unfortunate that Horseweed isnt in abundance there because it's a great plant. However, Goldenrod does perform about the same and is a fine substitute. I'm gonna check out that link right now my friend. We'll catch up soon

So, in your opinion, is this a good starting place to try for an notch less ember
@boggycreekbeast Жыл бұрын
I would start with a soft wood but you can certainly try this. Have a good day

How in the world do you make hand drilling look so easy. I just cant do that hand technique. I have a feeling YOU could do it blindfolded.
@boggycreekbeast Жыл бұрын
With enough practice you could do this. I sometimes go overboard when practicing myself. I have done this in the dark with no light so it can be done. I actually have a video demonstrating that. It's titled making fire in the dark survival challenge or something similar

Nicely done. I've made mullein on mullein (root) work as well, and also had the experience of the hearth becoming an ember. Unsure if it's consistently repeatable, it was a one-off experiment for me. Was an easy ember though. Thank you for the video 🔥🍂
