House Addition | Rain and Shingle Prep | Day 25

Cleaned up jobsite. Finsihed nailing sheathing on gable end and installed Tyvek. Installed rake framing. Taped seams on roof for incoming rain and wind.

I have the same addition on my home. The difference is the previous owners did not open the old roof or vent it. Now I get water damage inside the addition right where the newer/ older roof join. An ice dam happens just past where the soffit is on the new addition and the old roof meet. Can you give me any advise as to how to fix it. Do I put a tunnel vent in so that the old roof will be vented so air will not be trapped. Is this my problem?

I would guess that there is some mistake with the roofing and that is causing the leak. As for the ice dam, that could maybe be caused by no venting baffles in the rafters...that would be my guess. You don't have to remove the existing sheathing underneath of the addition roof, but, I wanted to for this job so the attic area was continuous. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching

How long can you leave the roofing on like that before putting on shingles

With that composite roofing paper.... A long time. However, because of the way it's connected to the existing roof it's not 100 percent water tight. In normal circumstances if you have this product down, nailed with button cap nails, it would be quite water resistant.
