What a spectacular craft. Like everyone else here, I am absolutely drooling at the prospect of it as a private plane. But I am also just happy that someone has not only built a Horten design, but is enjoying it and flying it -- it would be a real pity for something that nice to end up in a museum. It belongs in the air.
@jamesclukey74884 жыл бұрын
The Horten brothers would have loved this aircraft ! They designed it ! Make it three times the size, slap a pair of jet engines on it and you've got it.

Understandable how so many people are desperate to build this beauty! Remember that subtle details the eye can't see are often every bit as important as the overall form that it can see... (especially in a tailless aircraft). If plans are unavailable, it's not going to fly like this built from photos;) It's easy to dismiss the idea of designing an unusual plane like this as the arena of visionary genius, but rather than trying to rake the airplane together from very incomplete scraps of the original design, lean how to design aircraft instead. Use the form you *can* see as inspiration and generate the unseen details yourself - in harmony with not only the form that inspires you, but also your unique goals. Designs like this are often created entirely by one driven person. Sometimes there are streaks of genius in there, but I think the ones that inspire us are more often just the object of some creativity and a lot of driven, careful work. I guess I'm just encouraging builders to invest their skills and heart into designs that are either well documented, or that they understand technically or created themselves. It's kinda heartbreaking to meet someone who has poured themselves into a project that is doomed because it lacks a technical basis.

I disagree. Don't forget Japan had their first jet engine before the us and it was built from photographs and sketches since the Germans at the time did not want to share their tech.

Just one question: What does this wing do in case of a stall? A Northrop test pilot lost his life by testing a stall with a flying wing and it flipped over and over and over and over backwards like a piece of paper. It was not recoverable and this poor guy died. The B2 flying wing is able to fly safely because computers keep it far away from stalling. I am not a critic of a flying wing, it is just every technical system has its limits and being a pilot myself I know how easy it is to get into a situation where one unintentionally and initiated by turbulent air movement gets into a stall. Consequently stall recovery would be a crucial question for me.
@gtex0915 жыл бұрын
Wunderschön ! What about stall behaviour ? When stalling, do you loose lift in the front or on one side of the wing ? Any way very interesting !

It would seem to be faster and simpler to build than a Long EZ.... The tough part would seem to be making sure the wing is shaped correctly, and getting the weight and balance correct. Can this be built with an IO-360 and carbon composite and simply scaled up a bit into a higher speed 4 place with higher speed? That would be interesting!

What a plane. Maybe they just figured it was not worth producing plans and dealing with liability etc. This is a VERY hard design to copy without adding winglets, so like everyone else here, I hope someday they will release plans or a kit.

its like a private ufo ,,, or a baby Vulcan bomber , its a fine looking aircraft , ill bet some one some where has the moulds and plans , probably sitting in a corner of a shed some where , just getting in the way.

How does it take a stall? I read somewhere that Northrop's test pilot tried a stall and it started to flip backwards over and over and over like a piece of paper when you drop it. It was not recoverable and ended fatally. This is why the B2 Bomber needs computers to stay away from a stall. This is what I read about Northrop's first steps into the flying wing technology.

What a beautiful creation! First time I've come across it. For the poster - people don't watch aviation videos to listen to frigging London Symphony Orchestra. So many otherwise excellent aviation videos are, if not ruined, certainly severely degraded by covering up the sound of the aircraft and environment with some idiotic background racket.
