He’s kinda got a pint though. Yeah living art installations made of people are messed up, but engineering a person into a weapon? Isn’t that much the same? Physically perfect, but mentally incapable of many of the things that make us human, knowing only war throughout their artificially long lives, what kind of life is that?
@AnIdiotsLantern3 жыл бұрын
The fact that we can debate this at all is really interesting. Because objectively, Horus is a "good" misbegotten, especially at this point in history - he's brave, he's kind, he's level-headed, he's respectful of other cultures, he's good to the people around him. He really does embody the dream of a humanity united, exploring the stars in safety and peace. Meanwhile, Fo's creatures are amalgamations of nightmarish whimsy, random assortments of parts put together for funsies. There's a lot going on here. A kind of form vs. function, high concept art vs. utilitarianism, and whether or not it's moral to create living beings the same way you'd craft a tool or a weapon. Horus is clearly different from these art projects but how is slippery and hard to define.
@Saurophaganax1931Ай бұрын
@@AnIdiotsLantern Horus is different from these art projects in scale. Yeah he doesn’t have a million eyes and mouths and weeping sores covering his body. His monstrousness is not so immediately obvious. The monstrousness of Horus that Fo is referring to is his pure, raw, superhuman ability. He is a Demi god made real. A being not just designed for war but designed to shake the very foundations of the galaxy to its core. That is what horrifies Fo so much.

That's something that stuck out to me - this Horus is a really GOOD GUY. He's bringing people into the Imperium with offers of humanitarian relief, technology, and protection. He's being respectful of other human cultures, he's supportive and kind to the people around him. He doesn't WANT to hurt anyone if he doesn't have to. This is Horus at his most optimistic and benevolent. At this moment he really does embody the dream of a united Humanity traveling together into a future of peace and prosperity. None of this changes the fact that he was created to be a weapon of war.
@stevepalpatine28282 жыл бұрын
@@AnIdiotsLantern Horus Rising gives a good look at Horus before Erebus fucked everything up. He really was a good guy, thats what made his fall so tragic, even when they met the Interex, Horus stood firm against calls to wipe them put because they were friendly with Xenos. False Gods pissed me off because the writer made Horus an arrogant selfish bad tempered dick from the start, even before he was poisoned with the Anathame, basically the opposite of the Horus we saw in Horus Rising, I think if they had kept Horus as the likeable guy he was up until his corruption at the hands of Erebus it would have had even more of an affect on the story.
@AnIdiotsLantern2 жыл бұрын
@@stevepalpatine2828 I think if they had known how long the series would last they wouldn’t have had Horus fall by book 2. And really, I always thought the way they did the fall, where Horus doesn’t turn against the Emperor because of what he thinks are ideological reasons but because he got stabbed full of warp juice and left alone in a room with Erebus was a cop out. I really thought Horus Rising was building up to something else. It’s too bad.
@stevepalpatine28282 жыл бұрын
@@AnIdiotsLantern Yeah you get it. Horus Rising had him with serious doubts about the fanatical position on Xenos after meeting the Interex, and had him doubting the Emperor would have wanted them wiped out, now if they had pushed that story further, and had him maybe forced to destroy a peaceful human civilization _on the Emperors direct order_ because they'd got friendly with Xenos like the Interex, it would have sown the seeds for a very reasonable break between them, and left you wondering whether Horus wasn't actually right. Seriousky they should have left the Warp fuckery stuff to the Word Bearers, amd then maybe only had Horus join Chaos down the road, perhaps after realizing he didnt have enough to beat the Imperium by himself, making his "Fall" more akin to that of Magnus, who really had no other choice. They missed a big chance to make the Heresy much more complicates in motives than just "Horus is bad now because Erebus"

Horus was such a nice guy that his sudden change always felt too contradictory. Angron had more than enough reason, predisposition, and even some justifiable cause behind his hatred, but Horus... Horus was never predisposed towards the kind of atrocities he committed!

Thats what I didnt like about False Gods. McNeil made Horus an arrogant short tempered asshole from the start, even before his corruption at the hands of Erebus and his Anathame fuckery, when not six months before Horus had been a great guy and standing firm against calls to wipe out the Interex because of their Xenos collaboration, it was such a rapid character shift it felt clumsy.
@praetor98222 жыл бұрын
@@stevepalpatine2828 I think that the fall of the Interex was the first domino. Horus was starting to grow overburdened, Erebus continuously pours venom in his ears, then he gets struck with the Anathame, and it's all downhill from there.
@stevepalpatine28282 жыл бұрын
@@praetor9822 Yeah it's just it was done so fast it was clumsy. The HH series is over 60 books, and Horus's fall took only the first two. There should have been at least 5 books with Horus slowly changing under the pressure of being Warmaster, maybe at first doing something pretty messed up out of necessity to save lives, and then each time it getting a little easier for him to justify crossing that line, instead he was a great guy who anyone would follow into battle in Book 1, and between Horus Rising and False Gods he turned into an arrogant, short tempered, preening asshole. Even Fulgrim handled Fulgrims fall with more subtlety than the series paid to the Warmaster, Horus just suddenly started acting like an insecure petty asshole out of nowhere, it was fumbled, they had the chance to make it a truly epic and tragic tail of a son coming to betray his father and his principles through corrupted ambition and very real criticisms of how the Emperor handled things and ham fisted it because they wanted to get the big set piece battles.

Abnett's Emperor : let's find a better name than Crusade, I haven't read Guénon "Le Symbolisme de la Croix", so I don't know what that means but let's go with "common sense" from 28 Thousand years ago or so. BL : Legio Custodes are not meant to be army of conquest. FW : special rule Crusaders for Custodes and Emperor's Children. GW : put Crosses on Custodes armours, and make them do everything better than Space Marines. Modern "lore" has too much nonsense in it. Horus is awesome though in that story.
