Why are guys riding the tailboard???? That's a good way to get run over, and hasn't been recommended practice for 40 years. Haven't seen a major FD using standard transmissions for all that time either.

This is a video of recruit training with an old fire engine and it looks like they are only on the tailboard while backing up, probably so they don't run a recruit over or smash the rig. I am only a photographer so it is out of line for me to answer your questions but but since you are my first commenter I am excited to answer you.
