PSA to all mommas birthing in the hospital or anyone who has hospital bills for any reason: ask for an itemized receipt! a LOT of times it’ll drop down to 20% of the original price and you’ll find they were charging you for many unnecessary things!!! it’s absolutely ridiculous that we have to do that in the first place!

Yay! Love the birth center experience so far-- I am 18 weeks along with this little one. My first one was a hospital birth and it was INTENSE. I can't talk badly about the hospital because my nurses helped so much! BUT! I was really wanted to do a birth center, and I am SO glad we chose it. We love my midwife and birth center ladies. The only thing is my insurance literally will not help with ANY part of my birth center experience. Don't get me wrong, the price for hospital birth was STILL ridiculous out of pocket cost too. But even with that, I am still so satisfied with my decision to go to a birth center. I also want to add the prenatal appointments are more than just a quick "hows it going? Good. There's the heart beat. Kay bye." We get a full education at every appointment. My midwife gives me such great advice and nutrition expertise that helps my symptoms. It's just been great! Oh! One more thing! My birth center has AMAZING classes, not just Lamaze or birthing classes, but nutrition classes, father classes, sibling classes, workout classes, yoga classes, just an amazing community experience. Okay! I'm done now, but hopefully if you were on the fence, maybe this helped! :)

I’ve had two hospital births, two home births, one center birth and currently 35 weeks. I agree with what she said in this video. My hospital staff was nice enough but it was very assembly line/institutional feeling. My home births were fantastic so was my center birth! I prefer the center because it’s a place where I can have mental peace, I’m not worrying if I got everything done, I’m not thinking about dishes or laundry, I’m there to have my baby and that’s it. Baby #6 will be arriving in a few weeks and I’m looking forward to delivering in the birth center.
@AnnA-jd4xm2 жыл бұрын
did you do anything to help cope with pain?
@LetsFocusOnChrist2 жыл бұрын
@@AnnA-jd4xm meditation was my primary coping mechanism. I also labored in the tub for a while. For 1-2 I had epidurals for the pain and I was scared of that going into my home birth. 3-5 were definitely not painless although nothing I couldn’t work through because of the mental prep. With baby 6 I started meditating as soon as I found out I was pregnant and ended up having what I would consider a painless labor. Look up ‘mindful hypnobirthing’. It’s about being present in your own body and embracing the sensations instead of being overwhelmed by them.

@@jordanmcduff1350 I like going home soon after birth. I couldn’t wait to leave the hospital, I could never rest because of all the people coming and going, poking and prodding. I’m in Ontario, Canada and while I had a hospital birth, I still had a midwife, so there were no nurses and no doctors, even though it was a hospital environment. I had to stay overnight so babe could be monitored because I was GBS+ and there was no time for an IV during labour. I’d have much preferred to go home after getting cleaned up. Overall, it still wasn’t my ideal birth so I will probably choose a birth centre for my next one, but only because now I know what I’m doing and I’m not worried about wanting an epidural (not available at birth centres in my area). So definitely look into what’s available in your area and talk to your midwife. I HIGHLY recommend a midwife over an OBGYN if you are having a low risk pregnancy.

My triage nurse broke my water with her fingers. My daughter had shoulder dystocia. I was made to lie on my left side throughout my entire labor and was not allowed to move. I was given meds that I specifically asked to not be given simply to speed things up. After the birth, my husband stepped out for a minute and the nurse refused to wait for him and bathed our child and rubbed her aggressively with a towel after we asked for tummy time before the bath. He was very angry about that part. We were kept 3 days after delivery because our daughter was "just UNDER the level for high bilirubin". I'm using a midwife next pregnancy.

But labor kept stalling and failing to progress. At 48 hours of my water breaking we decided to go to the hospital to get induced medically to try and minimize the risk of infection due to length of time my water was broke. Labor started happening rapidly and painfully. This went on another 12 hours. I finally took pain meds.... my baby was so low in the birth canal they could feel her head. I was so exhausted in delirious from the pain and lack of sleep. They offered to bring the vacuum out to help get her out. We did that and her vitals started to drop. I literally had nothing left in me and so the rushed me off for emergency c section. She was born May 23rd. So the experience was traumatic. She was sunny side up with the cord wrapped around her twice. Which was what was keeping her from coming out... my midwife though. She was incredible. She stayed by our side the entire time and advocated for us at the hospital and visited us at home after we were released. My experience was unpredictable so no one is to "blame" for anything. I had my sister, who has been a doula for years and my mother who was watching my toddler. My husband was much more involved and caught the baby in the pool with my midwife next to him. For example, I want a water birth and the current guidelines do not recommend it because there hasn't been any safety studies on it. Because hospitals don't want to get sued, they will not be practicing outside of guidelines. The problem is you can't get one because there is no studies and there is no studies because you can't get one. There is not enough of a balance between comfort and science.

If you needed cesarean, you would have to transfer to the hospital. Epidurals aren’t given at a birth center but there are many other ways to manage pain. If you’re considering a center birth, go take a tour of one. I also want to add, ‘emergencies’ typically don’t happen with home births. As my first midwife explained, she and her assistant are there watching you the whole time. They can spot an issue before it turns into an emergency. In the hospital, they are caring for many women at the same time and may not spot it until it is an emergency. (I’ve had 2 hospital births with epidurals, 2 home births and 1, soon to be 2 center births)

How is this possible that we allow doctors to control us to the point that we have no say over whether we are given unnecessary medication, whether their fingers are shoved in our vaginas, etc...? It's just despicable to me. Luckily my husband and I are moving and we found an actual birth center that will take our insurance. I'm so excited.

Like if the baby is breached, or the mom is losing too much blood too fast, or if the baby needs special treatment right away, or the mom needs more oxygen.

My hospital experience was great! For what it was... 🥴 My nurses were awesome and the OBs were wonderful but it didn't go how I wanted it to AT ALL. They talked me into a medicated birth after 12 hours of labor. My son was sunny side up and they did nothing to help me labor through that other than let me soak in a bath. I felt weirdly alone and yet supported in all the ways I didn't want to be supported 🤣😅 they were great about helping me let go of any medication "guilt" but I desperately wanted to go unmedicated and really only gave in because I could see I didn't really have any support in that... That said my insurance covers everything at the hospital so my out of pocket cost was $0 I hear they cover birth centers too but probably not like that 😩 we will see with this next one.

I wanted to go to a birth center and at the very end they ended up transferring me to a hospital anyways 😢 i ended up with bills from both . Thinking about a home birth next. Exactly what she said. I ended up on the bed on my back and that made me throw up several times to the point where they gave me medicine to speed up delivery. The hospital is very traumatic in certain ways but it's nice that you have support? I really wish i could have been at the birth center 😭 but grateful that my baby is healthy and happy 💕

Agree with everything except some people like giving births on their backs I have heard. Probably rather propped up then completely laying down on their back. And not through the whole labor process. But it's good to be able to try what works for you.

This isn’t 100% true. While yes, America is very behind as far as understanding that pregnancy and birth aren’t a pathological process, meaning not abnormal, you don’t have to have a midwife in a birth center or at home to have a nice birth. I am a certified nurse midwife and I do all of my deliveries in a hospital. Every patient is unique and every birth is individual. I have delivered babies in every position you could imagine. I deliver with lights off, no side conversation, and let my patients lead the way. I do not do continuous monitoring on low risk moms (which is most), I allow my patients to eat and drink (even on Pitocin). I have continuous discussions throughout labor about my patient’s wishes and concerns, their partners and other support persons questions/concerns, and my recommendations. I am knowledgeable in the latest evidenced based practices and guidelines, I am required to do continuing education to ensure I am up to date on the latest research. Women are respected, listened to, empowered, honored, and we have a mutual trust between us. You do not have to deliver outside of a hospital to receive quality care. But you do need to do some legwork to find a hospital in your area that has certified nurse midwives and is supportive of the midwifery model of care. The beauty of this is you can have an epidural with us if you end up going that route or you can labor in the tub medication free. We see a very wide range of preferences-there are no limits.

This is NOT what the birth centers are like in Colorado where I live.. you don’t get to pick your midwife you get whichever one of four is on call. You absolutely do not have hour long appointments (one of mine was literally 5 minutes) and they do not come to your house for postpartum visits. Your practice sounds perfect but that is unfortunately not most of the birth centers I have researched which has led me to have my second home birth.

In Sweden it is really rare to give birth at home, you give birth at a hospital. If you want to give birth at home it costs a lot and it is not sure that you can pass the test especially if you give birth first time. What is your recommendation if you do not have a choice and are forced to get birth at a hospital? It would be great if you did a video about that because everyone does not have a choice. :)

@@CajunStork We do not have birth centers as I know, just hospitals. We have midwives at hospitals but you know they change shifts (in Sweden we work for 8 hours) and things like that. @@kimmiekay456 hi sorry it's a late I just saw this. Do your research abd talk to as many people as you can to get an idea of all the different options you have. At the end of the day do what you want to do and what is comfortable for you and your little family. Having a baby is already stressful and scary. Do what is best for you and don't let other people make you feel bad or guilty about your decisions. At the end if the day it's going to be you and your baby and that's all that matters.

Now I am wondering if a birth center would be a good fit with my history?

You’d have to interview your local midwives. Be sure to ask them what medications they carry and what experience they have with shoulder dystocia.

Baby #8 here and I’m not so happy with my hospital’s policies this time around. At this time, I’m looking at switching to a birthing center, but the only one within an hour’s drive from us is owned by the same hospital chain. So frustrating! My hubby has been my advocate for all of our other 7, my doula with my first child spent almost the whole labor in the waiting room with my mother in law, so haven’t done anything more with doulas. Is a hospital stand-alone birth center the same or different? 🤷🏼♀️

Damn in my country a hospital birth is free of charge with insurance and this includes all the antepartum and postpartum care but a birth center birth would cost near $10k (includes antepartum, postpartum, midwife fee, doula fee and fee for the use of a room and birthing classes) just because insurance doesn't cover anything at all if it's outside a hospital and not with an OB. I'd definitely prefer a birth center birth, but it's way too expensive for me.

Contractions are terrible in an environment where mom is laying or sitting in one position, lots of strangers coming in and out asking questions, needles involved, anxiety, etc... With a good support system, an understanding of how movement in labor helps birth go faster and be less painful, and a quiet space, labor feels a lot more like hard work and less "unbearable" for sure!! Hospitals just don't set us up for success to labor without drugs. Unfortunately many women walk away from that experience feeling like laboring naturally must be awful- but it's actually wonderful!
@Boopartaddict10 ай бұрын
@CajunStork honestly my nirses and OB were very kind and respectful they let me choose what I wanted...but I think if I wasnt so scared, or exhausted I would try it... my grandmother gave birth to 6 kids with midwives no drugs in her home...and she said it was very painful...I just dont think it would be for me...

what are your thoughts on a Nurse midwife in the hospital
@ang_1314 жыл бұрын
I’m not the midwife, obviously, but I did have a midwife as my primary care provider even though I had a hospital birth. It doesn’t change the environment, of course, it’s still sterile and not homey at all, but my midwife (who I’d been seeing for prenatal care the whole time) and her partner midwife were the only ones who attended to me and my baby, they listened to me, checked in with me the whole way. I think it’s happy medium for parents who are maybe nervous about birth outside of a hospital (which has all the care necessary in case something goes wrong) but still want a personal touch. That said, it depends on your location and whether or not midwives have privileges at the hospital.
