Everytime I fertilized my corn this year it has poured a flood and washed it away. I've fertilized it 6 times if not more and it's still stunted. It won't stop raining here on the coast of NC. Hoping I can get another crop in. I've had to dig potatoes early and throw tomato plants in the woods. We are finally getting a break now. Great video guys, always learn something knew.

@@gardeningwithhoss understood. Context is key. Just like how you can state your tool or seed is growing better or you have struggled with it due to being in a hotter or wetter climate. We on the other side of the video may not see or get the under laying context that "it's up to you to from an opinion" in how you stated what you did you leave it as a hard open context for a divisive statements and opinion to the viewers. Again, just asking to not fuel the fire of issues of this channel or its main topic. Instead, we can help others that dont see climates like they have and inform them how to pick up the peaces from this. I have seen 3 other channels say that the sub 10 degree temps are a total loss of carrots/lettuce/other cold crops... when we both know that's not right. So stay positive and out of the ditch of the non topics of what I come to your channel or site for.

Revisiting planting early sweet corn varieties with classic Greg and Travis start @ 26:00 for a laugh. Then, start at the beginning. Yellowstone and Glacial White did fantastic planted side by side for us in S.E. Louisiana last spring 2022. No cross pollination. For ideal germination, be extra patient and wait for ideal soil temperature like they suggest. These two varieties are holding there honey sweetness after pressure canning nine months later.

I did not check the weather before I cut up my red norland potatoes. I read the page on your website that said to cut up several days before planting. I am hopping that I did not cut them up too early! I am waiting for it to dry up a bit. I think I will plant them on Monday. By then they will have been cut up for 8 days.

I sure do enjoy this podcast, it really is best gardening show I know of to layout things in regular folk terminology. You know I was thinking about the people who ask about cross pollination and wonder if they are worried because they want to save their seeds because if not then it really don't matter due to cross pollination only occurs in the next generation which would be if they were savings seed to plant the next year otherwise it don't matter for the crop that is actually growing. If a home gardener is buying seeds each year and not saving the seeds for next crop then why worry about cross pollination?

When you have a small bed of corn, you need to hand pollinate. That is the only way to get the corn to fill out. Clip a piece of the tassel and rub it on the silks. The tip silks are the last to form so you have to hit the silks on 2 different days. (at a minimum)

If you have a small plot and want to take the time to do that, seems like it works. Considering the size of our corn plots, it's much quicker to use a sprayer.

So I have a bit of competition going on with the neighboring farm on who’s sweet corn is better last year we went blow for blow(all in good fun). I grew some peaches and cream no complaints on the quality and flavor by any means. But after watching this episode I’ve decided to go all in. I put a big order in including more drip tape, an abundance of the fertilizers you recommended including your fertilizer injection system, a pound of the Temptress and the Avalon Sweets along with finally buying one of those bada** camo Hoss hats(gotta start reaping you guys I’ve been %100 happy with your products)Anyways with your guys knowledge and products I’m hoping this year there will be no contest and my corn will end up on the neighbors dinner plate🤣🤣

Curious about drip tape. I just placed an order with you guys and I plan to use my well water but I also have a pond I would like to utilize. I saw your irrigation videos and it's not recommended to use pond water with drip cause of the muck/silt. Any suggestions on pumps and filters to possibly try with drip? Such great fertile water I wish I could use. Or would you try using it in overhead watering?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
You can use the pond water as long as you install a swimming pool type sand filter upstream of the drip system.

I know this week’s episode is focused on corn but I have an onion question. I live in Michigan and I have seed started a long day onion inside for the first time. You guys have said that the bulbing of an onion starts around 14 to 16 hours of sun. If I keep my lights on for 18 hour on and 6 hours off to start all my seeds could that trick my onions into bulbing WAY too early?

Did I hear you say that you coukdnt grow sweet corn by field corn. I beleive we are rotating field corn in the back field and the garden is in the back as well. Will this cause issues??
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
You can grow them beside one another as long as you stagger the plantings. Plant the sweet corn first, then plant the field corn about 2 weeks later and you'll be fine.

What is the name of a variety of corn that the old timers call “Horse Corn” or “Field Corn?”
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 2 жыл бұрын
Grain corn used for animal feed is more often white and sometimes called horse-corn. Dent corn, also referred to as field corn, is common in livestock feeds Field corn is the classic big ears of yellow dented corn you see dried and harvested in the fall. In fact, it’s sometime called “dent corn” because of the distinctive dent that forms on the kernel as the corn dries. Field corn has dozens of uses, but it is most commonly fed to animals or used to make renewable fuels like ethanol to power our cars and trucks. hosstools.com/product-category/premium-garden-seeds/corn-field/

I love hoss tools. Your transforming my gardening experience and knowledge. Please forgive my ignorance. I am transitioning to traditional gardening from square foot gardening. When you say row spacing are you talking about the distance of the row or the distance between rows. Like you were talking about the row spacing on the corn should be 30 to 36 inches. Thank you from snowy San Antonio, TX!
@gardeningwithhoss

"row spacing" refers to the distance between rows.

Thank you. I watched one of your corn planting videos today and realized that. My experience with gardening has been only square foot. It seems like such a waste of space to plant in a single row with 30-36” in between. It is hard to plan my garden that way. However I applying all of your techniques this year and using your seeds and equipment. We will see what comes of it. Thanks again!
