Nice looking camper and that’s a great setup. Host campers have a nice layout I was looking at them but settled on a Lance. We just ordered a 2022 Lance 1172 their largest model. Won’t be delivered until perhaps March next year to our dealer in Canada. We traded our 2008 Lance 992 in on it. I agree about the versatility of a truck camper. With 4WD we can go more places as we prefer to boondock as well as maneuvering in parking lots, roads and highways. We went new so we could pick the interior colours and options like solar power, lithium batteries and a tankless water heater. Lance make a great camper and it’s the little things that can be very annoying like door latches and drawers guides fittings and trim where some companies cheap out.

The biggest mistake people make is to make sure you buy the lagest truck, if you want a roomier space. Also , there are many types of trucks out the. Get one with the largest payload as possible. One that has a what's called floating suspension , install airbags with proper air in them to balance the load, 4 wheels (a dually) in the back also helps balance and stability. Good luck !
@philborchelt53962 жыл бұрын

I have a 2011 Host 11.6 Everest triple slide. The constant complaints are the are to short to narrow doorway, couch leg rest too short. Simple thing is they were built for smaller people like me. I am 5"-6" no complaints. My small frame fits fine. There are few options I like to change. But over all this serves my dog and ma fine. I have gone to off grid camping, no problems. I like your toolbox on the passenger side, and the sliding draw in your rear storage area. Other wise I really like my unit.

I love the Mammoth.... the king size bed and easy access from both sides has to be my favorite feature. The 22 models have a better solar package & accordion door system for the bathroom now too. But I'm bummed that they took out the window by the rear slide. We have been researching all options, truck camper, travel trailer and 5th wheels for quite sometime now. Although the amenities and living space on a 5th wheel are wonderful, we feel it's just too big for the travel we want to do. So we're weighing the pros and cons between tc and tt. We like the mobility of the tc and the no worries with towing, but the access to the essentials (i.e. bathroom and fridge) during travel is a huge con. I guess a Walmart or Cabela's or any big parking lot would work in a pinch but just not always convenient compared to a road side rest stop. Decisions, decisions.....🙄🥴 I appreciate your video and I hope you find time to enjoy yourselves in the near future. Happy trails and good🍀luck!!
@walking_man2 жыл бұрын
Accessing the fridge or bathroom is in no way an issue. You just have to press a switch for a few seconds while the slide deploys and then you'll have full access. Also, the Mammoth still has the large rear window. If you don't see it then you're looking at a Host Yukon or Host Everest.

Host campers are 188 ft feet a trailer without slides is about a 195 ft at 28' long. It's huge. Also a Ford 450.works great. Don't use air bags just go to a spring shop and they can put a spacer at top of spring then you'll be back to factory level.

We had our Mammoth on an F450 with Torklift overload bumpers and Airlift 7500 airbags and were quite pleased with the handling and driveability. By the way, this review is not of a Mammoth. It is the Everest model.
@philborchelt53962 жыл бұрын
@@walking_man I haven't looked at F450 specs lately, but I will bet money you are overloaded with a Mammoth if you have a crew cab and diesel. Overload bumpers and airbags may level the ride but they DO NOT increase payload capacity. Insurance companies are totally aware that many truck campers are overloaded and are just waiting to deny ANY accident claim you file. Police are also stopping truck campers and checking weight. Luckily I was fully legal. Trooper had given 7 "operating an unsafe vehicle" tickets (which require a court appearance) to truck campers in the last year. HUGE fine and vehicle/camper can be impounded!!! I see people carrying Mammoths and other multi-slide campers on 350s/3500s. I GUARANTEE you almost every one of them is overloaded!! I have an International CV (basically a Chevy Silverado 5500) and LOVE the excess capacity I have! Cheers!!!
@walking_man2 жыл бұрын
@@philborchelt5396 Hi Phil. I appreciate your reply. The only thing I disagree with is when referring to multi-slide campers you said "almost every one of them is overloaded." I would have said "definitely every one of them is overloaded." Including mine. Our Mammoth on an F450 was about 1,000 pounds overweight. And most likely more with all the stuff we had not only in the camper but in the crew cab as well. The main reason we chose an F450 over an F350 was the bigger brakes - about an inch bigger on all the disks. We knew adding airbags and overloads would not increase payload. We did it mainly so we wouldn't be the a..holes with the headlights shining in everyones eyes. Nevertheless, the truck handled the load just fine. An F350 and an F450 are both class 3 trucks rated at 14,000 pounds. The F450 in reality will handle a bigger load with the bigger axles and brakes. Still, the only way to be sure is to do like you do and get an F450 chassis class 4 (16,000 pounds) or an F550 (19,500 pounds). We've learned a lot after having a Mammoth on an F450. If we were to do it all over again we'd consider the same, but would put a little more time looking into an F550. It would be interesting to find out what axle, suspension and frame differences there are between F450 and F550. All we learned about the F450 came from our own research since every Ford dealership was totally inept at providing any guidance or knowledge. Just for fun I'll ask a dealer salesperson, and then their sales manager during the follow up, if an F350 or an F450 carries more in the bed. "The F450 or course" is their answer until we look at the payload chart and see the F350 carries 1,200 pounds more (although not really, only carries about 200 pounds more when configured with diesel and two batteries and two alternators as the F450 is). I wish there was a way to send you my phone or email in private. I'd love a phone conversation with you about the benefits of your CV.

Thanks for the update. A lot of us cannot get to a place to see these units and having your impressions is great. How is your mileage with the truck/camper and how fast do you drive? I would rather have a king bed, but the upper wardrobes are nice as well. I have found that ANY recliner is too small for me and now that I am 60 with back problems, I cannot spend too much time in them. However, I was able to find a folding ottoman and I simply sit on the sofa or chair and use that and it works and then you can have storage underneath etc. For us, in Canada, dining outside is an adventure with all the insects. So, for breakfast and even lunch we eat inside. It is just more convenient. We have a nice screen tent that sets up quickly and so we often have dinner out there. What does your camper weigh loaded up? We put a step under our stairs for our class A 35 foot RV. It holds 1000 lbs so it is not likely to break when we come down. Wow !! your slides are really fast. That is really nice. I agree with you I would take the space over moving out the slides. I see folks living in truck campers without slides and it is crazy tight and if you are bigger person, that HAS to get old after a few days. I wish my bank account was big enough to just order a Yukon to spec! Any trouble with your hitch extension grounding out on uneven terrain? I guess your spare could not be mounted beside the gas tank on your truck bed? Do the jacks not retract all the way or are you just saving time? What did the retro on the truck cost you? That you did not use it as much was that due to personal schedules or something with the camper? Thanks again for this. Travel safe. Henri (RVing with Henri)

Completely unusable with slides in. I won't have any RV with a slide if when the slide is in it becomes unusable. In fact I prefer no slides at all. Added weight, mechanics and electric along with roof awnings, operation failures (x 3 in your case) and problems with seals. It's getting hard to find no slides in any type of RV. I don't know if you have 4 WD, but that would be a plus. I'd be concerned about it being so top heavy especially in an emergency driving situation and high cross winds. I'd like to suggest you use a microphone. I'm constantly adjusting the volume. A useful video that Host probably isn't thrilled with.

Man, that pretend-tile bath surround is soooo lego / dollhouse. Host can do better in this otherwise amazing camper!

Why aren't you using a wide angle lens? I'm a retired Navy Photographer and your not doing yourself any good showing it this way. This is just constructive criticism when a I had my Cirrus Camper one of the comments I received when I photographed the interior was how spacious it looked. I suggest you redo this on wide angle super wide.
@millersmonstrosity34193 жыл бұрын
Well if I use a wide angle then I get criticized for embellishing or trying to make the camper look bigger than it is. I guess you just can't win either way. I understand your point of view though

I really don't see the purpose of a tc of this size. It kinda defeats the purpose of a tc. I wish the manufacturers spent more time on making them better instead of just bigger.
@millersmonstrosity34193 жыл бұрын
I get that from most peoples perspective. But for us its still a compact setup compared to our 5th wheel and we can tow a boat with it so its a win win to us. All depends on what you want
@HioSSilver19993 жыл бұрын
@@millersmonstrosity3419 oh yea it's still smaller and more versatile than a 5th wheel. We have a lance 845. I can't say it wouldn't be nice to have a bigger one at times. But overall i think tc manufacturers need to think outside the box a bit more for the smaller campers instead of just thinking bigger is better

@@HioSSilver1999 To me, most of the truck campers out there _are_ on the small & narrow side, especially the no-slide ones, which are less woman-friendly. I'm glad these bigger ones exist otherwise I wouldn't consider truck camping at all.
@HioSSilver19992 жыл бұрын
@@celestepalm6949 just my point. They make these big behemoths larger and larger. While at the same leave ALOT on the table for the people that actually want a tc and not a rv. There's lots of stuff they can do to a none slide tc.....like make the damn thing wider. For instance my lance 845 is 93" wide....there's no reason it couldn't be 96 or 98" wide. The overcab area could use a step up roof to have a little more headroom. Stop designing the damn camper around the dinette. They act like the dinette is the most important part. Put the bathroom in the middle of the camper to have some separation of the cooking and bed areas. And make the bathroom be bigger than the dinette.....i need less room to eat than I do to poop and shower. All that could be done to make a nonslide far more functional and livable with little to no added weight. But instead they just want to make them bigger and bigger. No real design going on, for the most part 90% of tc floorplans are identical to my old 2001 845. Which isn't terrible but for the price, added weight these days and functionality the new ones are no better than it is. Manufacters of these super sized tc's are short changing real design for more mass.

@@HioSSilver1999 Everyone has their preferred floorplans. Yes, I'd love no-slides to be wider too - is it legally possible? Like you, I prefer some separation b/w the bedcab & the living area. But I'm also one of those digital nomad dinette lovers, who enjoy the view while working. So, it's the huge TCs for me because I hate wet baths & need the workspace. - Love your step-up roof idea.
