@jbellfarmer2245 жыл бұрын
From watching other channels who have a continuous dryer setup, that would probably be best for you all. In southwest Kansas, we never really have to worry about drying any of our crops because we get them in a lot earlier than you all do back east and they dry down quicker in the fall because about 90% of the corn acres are irrigated here, we can control the water. Plus, no one in my immediate area even has grain bins. We all just haul straight to the elevator, and they only take corn if it's below 18%. Again, another great video Ryan and hope you all can get your crops out in a timely manner.

Hi Ryan, love the vids, love the quality. Not a farmer, but am a business owner... Continuous dryer and grain leg are both pricey investments, but you should make savings having both installed at once. Especially since they compliment each other in operation. The leg seems simple, saves time/labour and is safer to operate overall. Ordinarily only a small improvement, buuuuuut, Travis' ankle should be a reminder of how precarious small business can be with high manual labour requirements. The dryer is more interesting. Given that weather patterns are all over the place lately, removing the moisture variable is a smart move. It opens up more days for harvest, and the cost could be offset by removing the elevator's high moisture price adjustment. And if your crop management is paying off in higher yields, you would have more secure options for storage or even spot sales of overflow.

Love the shot of the inside of the trailer unloading. Nice that Rocket decided to keep ya company in the truck.
@rolandhemmann59525 жыл бұрын
You asked about installing a grain leg and grain dryer. The best set up I have seen is a leg supplied by a pit that is divided in half so you have a wet side and a dry side. Wet corn is moved to an overhead storage bin that supplies the dryer. The dryer puts the dry corn into the dry side of the pit. The leg moves the corn up into another overhead bin that can dump into a truck and off to market or to the grain bin near the leg.

continuous grain dryer would definitely be awesome however once you start drying then you pretty much have to keep feeding that sucker all the time. My cousin in central iowa takes his corn from the combine to the semi and to the local elevator it goes, no drying and the trucking is already done, although I reckon the elevator may charges him for drying and storage fees until he is ready to sell. Big advantage is no grain bins on the farms that have to be put up or maintained. Reckon there are advantages and disadvantages to both ways. Another advantage is he doesn't have to worry about the frost going out of the gravel roads in the spring. Enjoy all your videos!

Absolutely a Yes to the grain leg/ continuous flow dryer. Besides preventing future spoilage, it would also allow to you harvest longer/quicker because you won't have setup time for the auger, plus you wouldn't lose a whole day of transferring from one bin to the other for storage. Spend the extra and replace the failing 10k bin with a new one for wet storage, so if you know rain is coming you can just fill all the carts/wagons up and unload as the wet bin empties out...you just bought yourself a "day" of harvest even though you can't actually get into the fields. Then you've got 40k of dry storage, 10k of wet storage, and a continuous flow dryer driving the whole operation. I think you guys would see it pay for itself very quickly with the better harvesting speed and more controlled moisture points. I mean, you gotta spend money to make money, amiright??

for the nuts loosening up on stirator- try nylocks nuts with another as a jamb nut or wrap fishing line in the threads of bolt then heat with a lighter or propane torch to melt the line and fill in voids with threads. Third option is crimp/ smash threads on the bolt with visegrips so nuts can't come off. hope ideas help save headaches

Check the hucks that hold the gear track to the doors. Corrosion builds up between the aluminum and steel and makes the door too thick. We had to cut the huck rivets out and wire wheel all the parts and reassembled with regular bolts.

We had issues with the bees wings holding moisture after going through the dryer into the bin. After chipping out 5000 bushels of moldy corn one winter We used a drum cleaner to remove most of them first step from the combine. That took care of the lodging and spoilage problem. It worked much better to have a cool down storage before going into the long term storage. This was before all the air dry bins in use now. We had a Farm Fans batch dryer that did 110 bu per hour, a continuous dryer would be a great improvement.
@annesadosky98565 жыл бұрын
Continuous flow dryer is a big investment upfront but will pay itself off not only in times were they dock for moisture, but in the knowing of the moisture when you load it into the bin and not having surprises like the one you just had. That's of course just my opinion. Love the great work you and the family do and my son can't wait till the next one lol

@MatthewHoag775 жыл бұрын
Since you put corn in the high moisture Harvestore, I take it that you fixed the gearbox at the bottom first. While it seems like this debacle was a bit of a pain, it's related somewhat to the high yields, so it's almost a good problem to have. And hey, you managed to get out on the open road to see the countryside during harvest. I say whatever upgrades you guys want to make on your handling system will be welcome. The dryer sounds like a great idea to me.

A continuous flow dryer could speed up your harvest time - no leg needed if you pull hot and cool in the next bin. When nearly finished, you could dry the end and store it in the same bin. Also - no leg needed unless you substantially expand the operation, then you could use a leg to additional bins.

When you upgrade, put in a larger pit than you think, a larger leg than you need and make sure the fuel supply you have will power the dryer (we installed a second dryer at the farm I used to work at, and sucked the gas out of the line enough that it caused issues to the gas company). Also get a distributor with more openings than you currently need. Cranes are expensive and anything “major” at the top of the leg requires a crane. All of this will allow expansion without having to upgrade the core of your system.
@tapertrain16145 жыл бұрын
Grain leg and continuous flow grain dryer would be a great improvement to the productivity of the farm. That will produce a new problem though, combine and hauling to the grain set up will be your hold up. I think a coned wet holding tank, continuous flow dryer , and a blower system maybe a great option.
@thr80615 жыл бұрын
The ethanol plant near us is fairly new. Their grain dumping area makes it quick for farmers. In the fall, you would see a line of trucks for a mile or 2 at the old plant. The new one has 4 intake lanes and can handle a complete dump of a truck's trailer (like yours). Thus the lines of trucks is usually (maybe) only a 5-10 minute wait in fall.

@georgehewitt66365 жыл бұрын
hey Ryan we put all our corn through a high volume grain cleaner before it goes into the bin dryer. This eliminates almost all of drying problems. we feed the fines to some cattle. Our stirator runs on a cable instead of chains. We have had it for 15 years. Only problem that we have had is with a motor and a switch. A few years ago we checked into a leg and unload bin,that would have cost us 85000.00. Bought a new auger instead.

I know storage bins have come a long way but I'm not sold on them to dry corn. A corn dryer is the best way to insure that the corn going into the bin is dry and less condensation in the bin. As far as a leg I don't see that you need one your bin aren't that high that a auger could serve your needs. As you mention you do need to put those power lines underground.
