Another funny Cate Blanchett story: So Taika Watiti approached Tilda Swinton to cameo in What We Do In The Shadows as part of the Vampire Council. Tilda loved the idea, Cate overheard and wanted to be part of it as well. Taika said no because she's never played a Vampire. (They did get Paul Reubens and Danny Trejo though because they're dedicated)

Fun fact:. Shotguns are actually not drop safe. Even if the safety is engaged, if a round is loaded and the gun is dropped, it can misfire. While it seems a bit ridiculous, it's actually a legitimate outcome when the Dr. gets his toe blown off.

There's been a couple of times where British police end up capturing a swan that wandered onto a motorway or somewhere and they always reference this movie, it's an absolute cult favourite among officers cause it's the perfect mix of relatable and ridiculous.

When Nicholas shoots at the flower pot, the pot goes DOWN and lands on the woman/ "Hag". God, I love this movie! There are so many great jokes in this movie. I love how Nicholas actually states the motives of the murders before the red herring is presented.

The books they're reading are-well, not a hint exactly, but part of the joke. Iain Banks / Iain M. Banks was an author who wrote "literary" fiction under the former name and science fiction including his middle initial. So, the same person, presented differently, as the desk officer appears to be. I suppose they are also kind of a hint, if you notice that the officer appears to be switching back and forth between reading two different books depending on the time of day and/or his hair's appearance.

The Romeo and Juliet thing ends up being half orphaned. The gag isn't just that they're bad, it's that they're, like Blower says, "doing an homage to William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet." As in the Leonardo DiCapro/Claire Danes movie. Hence the costumes, the suicide by gun, and breaking in to Lovefool at the end. It's funny in a random bizarre way without knowing that, but it does have context a lot of people don't have knowledge of these days.

I see a couple of others have mentioned Cate Blanchett's masked cameo as Nicholas' ex, but the "Father Christmas" who stabs Nicholas is played by Peter Jackson. I have mentioned "Spaced" before, which is the TV show that Wright, Pegg, and Frost all worked on before doing the Cornetto trilogy (and something I hope could be a Patreon Exclusive in the future -- a nice short half-hour comedy with only 14 episodes that is perfect for a reaction channel because it's wall-to-wall pop culture references from all the stuff you've just watched). Bill Bailey has a recurring role on the show, so his appearance here is actually a reunion.

The writing is incredible. Everything is either a setup or a punchline. One I really like is Nicholas mentioning how his notepad saved him many times. Danny does the ketchup trick by stabbing the notepad that he put in that pocket in the previous scene.

Originally a lot of Danny's (Nick Frost) lines were going to be given to Doris (Olivia Coleman) as a love interest for Angel but they never really got the chance to develop it so they just gave them to Danny and it just worked so perfectly in building a really believable friendship

There are no wasted lines in this movie, everything is there for a reason. You're right, it's perfect, one of the best British movies of the last two decades imo. So many great moments, and tons that get missed too! When Doris is at Danny's birthday celebration, she's the only one wearing comedy breasts (painted gold, a Blackadder II homage) despite being the only female there. An early line is "if you wanna be a big cop in a small town, f*** off up the model village!" - which is exactly what happens near the end. When Danny throws the DVD down in the basket at the supermarket, it lands on a DVD thats an almost exact replica of the Shaun of the Dead cover. Oh, and it ends with Caught by the Fuzz by Supergrass. Damn right it's a perfect movies lmao! (Love your stuff btw Simone and George, I don't comment much but you guys are so entertaining I often go back and rewatch old videos of yours - great chemistry, incredibly funny, and you analysis' of movies is pretty solid too!)

Nobody seems to have mentioned 28 WEEKS LATER... Shaun of the Dead contained a little jab at 28 Weeks Later (a reference to "rage-infected monkeys"), so 28 Weeks Later has a character say that he's come all the way from 'Sandford' - and has a shot with a Swan crossing a road. Apparently 'Sandford' is the fictional location used in Training Exercises by the UK Police...

The "Romeo & Juliet" the Amateur Dramatics Society is putting on is a homage to Baz Luhrmann's "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" which moves the story to the US. The costumes and the Cardigans song they're performing come straight from the movie. It was one of the films that made Leonardo DiCaprio's name and was huge in its day but clearly hasn't stuck around in the public consciousness!

My favourite film ever, definitely the best script, every time you watch it you hear more things at the start that pay off later on, incredible detail, every throw away joke, the Andys mocking him by saying they'll call everyone in the village starting with Aaron A Aaronson... who's the kid at the end of the movie. The ending which is set up by them saying "you wanna be a big cop in a small down, fuck off down the model village" well, he does go there, and then becomes the big cop in the small town. It's an absolute masterpiece.

I like that Frost and Pegg rotate characters through the 3 movies. They are more or less equal in Shaun, Pegg is the smart successful one in Hot Fuzz, and Frost is the smart successful one in World's End.

Hot Fuzz takes a huge amount of inspiration from the greatest British horror film ever made The Wicker Man. I had the honour of meeting Sir Christopher Lee back in 2007 & got to speak to him at length about his role in The Wicker Man. If you do watch it, make sure you watch the final cut version…..& avoid at all costs the Nicholas Cage remake. Timothy Dalton; the most underrated James Bond is awesome in Hot Fuzz!!

Lots of references and in-jokes hidden in the movie. The NWA member who watched the camera feeds is Edward Woodward, who had lots of memorable parts over the years, but probably his most memorable was one playing a police officer sent to a remote community, just like Nicholas Angel. I'm not sure if you recognized the priest, played by Paul Freeman, who you previously saw in Raiders of the Lost Ark as Indy's rival Belloq. Early in the movie one of the Andys jokingly suggested they call up the whole phone book, starting with Aaron A. Aaronson; the red-headed kid in the miniature village is later revealed to be that kid. But that joke is itself a reference to the Judge Dredd strip in the comic 2000AD, which Simon Pegg is a huge fan of; in one story we meet Aaron A. Aaronson, a man who changed his name specifically to become the first person in the phone book.

i love how in both this and shaun of the dead theres one line of dialogue that sums up the entire plot of the film. i love how if you pause when they introduce kevin eldon's character around his head they have all his character traits on the chart behind him. i love the lethal weapon music when they discover the barn ful of weapons. i love the little bits of trivia i learned just through skimming this comment section. i loved this film when it came out but i wasn't prepared for the depth of it and just how this movie continually grows on you.

Yes, Timothy Dalton was so outrageously good in this, I could never take him seriously in any other role after I´ve seen this. Like he used to play a pretty menacing guest role a while ago on Doctor Who, I always had to think of this one and suppress my laughter. Also, if I would watch any of his James Bond movies or Flash Gordon today, I would probably always have a smile on my face. I´ve also had a similar experience with Bill Nighy after Love Actually. Like I already couldn´t quite take him seriously in Shaun of the Dead. Only exception being Pirates of the Caribbean, because you can´t really recognize him....
