They are completely legal to own even to this day. The problem is you can only buy smoke and chalk rounds and a few other specialty rounds but obviously not HE rounds or anything like that. But grenade launchers are perfectly legal to own and actually not even very expensive.

I think American gun control laws are very counterintuitive due to the simple fact that laws only pertain to law abiding citizens. The only people hurt by these laws are the decent, people who would like to be able to protect themselves. Criminals inherently don't abide by laws, so you're only hurting the people that do abide by them and making legal self defense a much more difficult task from people who are committing crimes.

I can say first hand that "cheap" guns used in crimes really isn't the case anymore. These days the gang culture has placed a premium on ownership of exotic and high-end firearms. You see FN 5.7 pistols which are pistols that are from Europe, they're absolutely state of the art and fire a bullet similar to that of an assault rifle.
