One thing that Sean does almost better than anyone is he gives background and lays a foundation for the question he’s asking. Let’s the person know who he’s interviewing kind of like “here’s why I’m asking this”, and it shows a genuine interest in them. Which most guests seem to appreciate as well. On top of him consuming as much content and information as possible about the guest. Then your pleasantly surprised when the guy hits you with actual thinking mans questions or brings up this small minoot, no one would know now detail. Its great. On the hand of why do they get mad about dumb questions, well you called me out here to promote some piece and your gonna try and disguise that with some garbage or charged questioned that ive either already answered several times, sometimes with the same person and yeah, they're gonna get upset after awhile. I like to think the people who are the best in their field aren’t taught by someone else. Because you would have to be the best to teach someone how to be the best. The only way to become as good at something as Sean is at interviewing is to do it in your own way. You have to master it yourself. It’s kind of like an art. You can teach someone the basics in art, and you can teach someone painting techniques, but you can’t teach them how to be good or how to be creative. A lot of times that stuff has to come naturally.

I think the magic of Sean as an interviewer is the fact that he's such a basic, down to Earth personality. His groundedness helps set a good vibe and pace for interviewees to be relaxed in as opposed to say a Talk/Late night show where the hosts are big personalities and characters in and of themselves which leads them to interject into interviews and conversations. However, I wouldn't compare him to Nardwuar as a lot of people seem to be doing simply because I feel like they differ too heavily in content and intent. Nardwuar is an interviewer in the purest sense of the word while Sean is a host who's great at interviewing.

Hot ones is truly one of the best interviews out there. Sean and his team deserve all of the awards.

It honestly blows me away that Sean was like "Hey, I have to interview these celebrities... why not do some research on them before hand, ask them insightful questions based on that research, then shut up and let them actually answer?" and its somehow a revelation and so incredibly rare that like every guest comments on how "incredible" it is. Just shows how lazy and shit most celebrity interview formats really are. Like you'd think that idea would be where you start from, but clearly its just not lol

I think what people like is that he doesn't treat them like something to be oggled at. He doesn't treat them as above anyone else, he treats them like a human who is doing what they love. He doesn't put them on a pedestal, he is equal and makes them feel comfortable. Also, doing all this background checking and research shows the amount of respect he has for all he interviews, which is both impressive and amazing. He himself deserves a lot of respect for that.

That anecdote question he asks Paul Rudd has to be one of the greatest interview questions ever asked, period. It's so specific to the interviewee, but also invites such incredibly thoughtful commentary on the entertainment industry as a whole.
