Local Steel worker here. Coils are and stay hot for days. DAYS. And I am not talking by day 3 you can lay on it. By day 3, you can finally stamd beside it safely. There is a rule here that you must ware natural fabric. Cotton and wool. While they can catch fire, they won't melt on you. Standing beside those coils can be hot enough, you will catch fire. Also never stand down from a coil. They start rolling. You won't stop it.

reason they retain so much heat is because they're made partly out of inconel. Inconel has a melting point of 1,350°C (2,460°F) and it's often used in machinery that gets to extremely high temperatures, like jet engines and nuclear reactors, as well as machinery that goes under extreme pressures, like deep sea vehicles and oil rigs.

@@christianromero6604 more or less, yeah. Those things come out of the factory at several thousand degrees and the only cooling they see, besides airflow, is quenching to keep them strong and durable. "Was 3,000° F" Steel begins to produce light at 900°F so after the oil bath it dropped 2,100° or more. So it cooled off a bit. That's how temperature works. Oil is flammable. That's common knowledge. It can spontaneously combust at 750° or higher depending on the oil. That's how oil works. It's the same in cooking as it is in a cars engine. That's why engines have a cooling system. The oil can burn off or catch fire. If the oil burns off, the engine can become so hot from friction that it literally welds the pistons to the piston chambers. That's what the check oil light means 😂

I had an internship at forge and the blacksmith told me multiple times to.allways ask him if stuff is touchable if we worked with fire that day and it was anywhere close to the fire. He called it "Dunkelwarm" in german so "darkwarm" in english and described that this is the most dangerous kind of warm.because if its glowing bright orange its just gonna "evaporate" your skin, but if its dark and still hot, it will melt and bond with your skin and continue to burn you because you cant get it off. You feel close to no pain when its Glowing bright yellow and orange, quite a good amound of pain when deep red, a fuckin lot of pain when dark
@NSB2544511 ай бұрын
Yup, the worst pain is in that 300-700°C range. it immediately sticks to your skin and you basically leave a few layers of skin on it. Above that temperature it doesn't stick it just smokes and stinks. And the worst part is that you have to dry the burned spot, running water over it just delays and worsens the pain. Ask me how I know.....

@wingid9 ай бұрын
@@magisterrleth3129why do they use oil instead of water?
@magisterrleth31299 ай бұрын
@wingid Because quenching in water can cause hydrogen embrittlement, where hydrogen leeches out of the water and into the metal, making it weaker and more brittle. That, plus water cools stuff off faster than oil does, and the faster you cool the metal, the more brittle once again. It's the only way to cool the netal quickly without making it unacceptably brittle.
