Every year after thanksgiving, my family gets together and makes tamales. It truly is all about spending time with family, not how the tamales come out. I also never knew that some people add broth during the steaming process.

Also, I think that the making of the tamales as a group is a wonderful family activity, and a fun way to celebrate Christmas.

I think that the stores doesn't allow filming because many robbers take pictures of the store prior to a robbery, and the establishments want to prevent it. I have a part time job in a grocery store, and that's what we were told.

Some years ago a local retail store (Farm & Fleet), kind of like a huge hardware store asked me to stop taking photos of some soda cases that I designed when I was working at a small brewery that also made soda.That is kind of typical that you are not allowed to just randomly photograph or video record in a store without prior permission. I think they may be afraid of possible lawsuit's or something.

I think 'verge' is a fairly commonly-known word in the UK, but I guess we have so much less road space that we're more likely to refer to the area (e.g. I'm just parked on the verge).

uhg... I don't think I'd have ever thought to eat a corn husk before. I've got to wonder if that's a specific species of corn, or how it was prepared. The corn husk I've seen is typically green, and rough.

I think that "Devil's Strip" is a Northeast Ohio thing. I was told we call it that because the city owns the land but the people who's house it's in front of are responsible to take care of it, although they aren't allowed to plant anything on it.

I feel like part of it might be that grocery stores in particular are often subject to really shitty people filming the kind of video that leads to a giant mess the employees have to clean up, like throwing milk on the ground for no reason. So maybe they see you with a camera and get worried that you're going to do something that will cause trouble for them.

I lived in the area in Ohio where the term "devil's strip" is used. I think they came up with that name because it's a pain in the butt to mow and groom, so naturally it's from the devil. Others just called it a tree lawn because there are trees planted in it.

Glauber S Pereira Good point. Maybe it's just the architects' and surveyors' term for it. I used to work for the Planning and Development Office for our city and that is what it is called in all legal references. Very interesting to hear the different words people can use for it. It always interests me to learn stuff like this.

They don't want people filming because they cannot control how they (and their brand) will be portrayed. It sucks, but that's how it is. You probably wouldn't want people to do anything that would portray your brand in any way except for the way you have worked so hard for it to be. There are probably other things that people/ stores are irrationally fearful of when people film them, but it is somewhat understandable.

I think a lot of places like supermarkets get nervous about cameras because so many people try to do those 'hilarious' videos where they go in and wreck the place / drop milk everywhere / assault someone. It's a shame that a minority of assholes makes it difficult for everyone else, but if it protects their staff I can't really blame them.

Who works in these stores? It's amusing to me how KZbinrs get in trouble for filming. I've had a few retail jobs and nobody that I've ever worked with, including managers, would have given a flying fack. I know it must be a common store policy, it's just that nobody I've worked with was ever that dedicated. I always imagine some rogue employee acting like a nutter because somebody's filming the merchandise again.

Why do americans pronounce "Tamal" like that? It's so unnecessarily wrong. Don't add the "e" at the end of Tamal, the singular of Tamales is Tamal not Tamale. Also, even if this isn't as important, you could try making an "uh" kind of sound at the "e" in "Tamales" for a closer pronunciation to the original.
