Saved me $ and time. Perfect video. Easy for first-timer with no electrical experience. You rock!

Excellent! I'm really glad you were able to replace the GFCI cord on your hot tub! It's nice to be able to save money on easy fixes!

Thanks very much, I'm putting in a tub from 220 to 110, and wanted to see the details on how the wire worked. GREAT quality video. Make more.

You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! This was the first time I've done this cord replacement. It was always so expensive to have a repairman come out to do this type of work.

I had the same issue with my Softub. The GFCI plug had burned out. I had replaced it once, time to do it again. Unlike this video, I didn't need a new AC cable. Picked up a new plug at Lowe's, this is just the head shown in this video, with the two push buttons for test and reset. I cut off the old plug, stripped the wires, fed them through the base of the new plug and inserted them into each of the three fittings, white, black and green. Tightened the screws compressing the wires, replaced the cover and voila, I was good to go! Plugged it into the outlet and tub was back. Total cost about $15 and about 45 mins of time. Make sure you have a good wire stripper, the AC cord is heavy duty. The plug is rated at 15 amps. Also wrapped a lot of black electrical tape at the base of the plug as my installation is outside... it's -6 now and the tub is chugging just fine.

That's great! At the time I made my hot tub repair I didn't know about the plugs! So I had to shell out $110 for the cable from a hot tub dealer! Since then, I have used one of the GFCI plugs you just mentioned. And I even made a video of it. Simply cut the old GFCI off and connect wires to the new one. Here's my new repair video if you want to see it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5OwmJ2qgqh5qsk

I am now restoring a Softub where I found the gfci plug cut off. I am tempted for getting the $15 head replacement plug to save money, but also am considering splicing, or rewiring a 25 foot cord so I can stretch further away from the house. Thank you for commenting on this video. Both were very useful for me.

I'm having a issue with my softub too. When I plug it in the GFI keeps resetting. Even if I put in a GFI outlet or not. Hopefully it's a easy fix. Thanks for the info.

Yes! Replacing the hot tub cord is definitely something you can do yourself!

I noticed the gfci cord is plugged into the non gfci outlet. Also interesting that there is a non gfci outlet next to a gfci outlet. Is that specifically for the hot tub? It won’t work if it’s plugged into gfci outlet?

Nicely done. I just picked up a like new Solana TX and need to install the gfci power cord to convert back to 115v. Thanks again!

At end, you cut the outlet cover. I understand that you wanted it covered. I do wonder why the box was mounted sideways instead of with the opening at the bottom, which was how it was made to be mounted???
@Lia22225 жыл бұрын
On the GCI connector, we arent able to remove the cover (the buttons are stuck kind of like on a TV remote control where buttons stick and u remove the cover to correct the problem and shut it back), the area of the GCI doesn't accept a regular screwdriver to insert to disassemble it. How do we open it to look at the under part of the button area????

I'm talking about the part you show at 6 seconds into the video

That's my issue. Thought there might be a fuse inside the gfci plug on the cord. I think replacing the whole cord is the safest path but I can see why someone would cut the gcfi plug off and install a new end if the existing cord and internal spa components are not the issue.

Don't understand why on the original setup and the new replacement lead there was loads of excess coiled up. That is not good and should have been cut to length required. Same with inner cables, why didn't you just trim to length needed?
@TheRenderQ5 жыл бұрын
That sounds like good advice! But I'm not a professional electrician or hot tub repairman so I did what I thought needed to be done. Just a simple DIY. It works and I don't have any problem with the hot tub running now.
@matthewjenkins11615 жыл бұрын
@@TheRenderQ If you're in a situation like that again working with basic cable, don't be afraid to trim to a more suitable length. Also worth checking how much you need before you start, as decent grade cables are not cheap and can often be supplied to required length.

Outlets are supposed to be at least five feet away from the hot tub.

Seems very strange that the new cord came with a light blue wire. I've never seen that color used...except in movies. That's the wire they don't cut when disarming a bomb...LOL
@TheRenderQ3 жыл бұрын
Haha! That and trying to distinguish the wire colors under the light of a glow stick! In the movies of course!

just to let you know, those weather covers arent supposed to open sideways like that, outdoor outlets should be installed up and down and that rain cover is supposed to close downward just fyi. if your electrician didnt mention that then he isnt following building code
@sheseems2 жыл бұрын
The electrician is not an inspector and wasn’t there for that. He could have up sold the guy but really he doesn’t care which way it’s mounted. That was probably a 3 hour minimum call and got the hell out of there to go make another easy 500$

My 25 yr old Jacuzzi 110 line cord attaches to the bottom of the electric box, not the side...There is no clearance . Does that sound correct, it looks nothing like your unit. I put my phone under the electric box and took a picture of the wires it doesn't appear they're held by screws, looks like a 3 prong plug-in (or something). Jacuzzi no longer supports this spa. Electricians are more interested in swimming pool fixes than small hot tubs. I have no electrical skills and maybe I'm wrong, but what I'm seeing, I just want to attach existing wires to a new GFCI box with a 3 prong plug. How to strip the line cord and insert the wires into a new GFCI box....that's a challenge. Comments, please, I realize you posted this 7 years ago....

Your outlet that you plugged your tub into needs to be replaced. The outlet looks burned and that is a fire hazard.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I definitely need to replace that outlet! It's one of those to-do things I just need just do!
