As a 76 year old RN - we are all so very different. Do not be too hard on yourself if you are having difficulties. Your psyche, your body, and your heart must all be working together for any results to appear. Seek help - if you are overweight - but always be balanced in your approach. It is up to you to make a decision about your health. God bless you all. ❤

Angie, I'm a senior fitness specialist.. The heavier weights I always push seniors to do, progressive overload training IS great for over 50, despite what some say. I've seen great results. However I would be careful about jumping, 20 jumps a day on concrete could absolutely injure someone with knee/hip issues they may not even be aware of. I would highly recommend REBOUNDING on a mini-tramp instead for those who are nervous about jumping

I was a vegetarian for 8 years and had a family to feed that wasn’t. It’s really mind over matter. I would just set aside things from their meal before adding in all of the sauces, seasoned, cheese, etc and prepare mine differently, the meat, veggies, etc. It’s not as hard as people think it is. Especially when you eat like this you have less extra ingredients than when you’re making the other meals. 👍🏼

Y'all don't forget MEDITATION which also reduces cortisol. It's good to be physically healthy, but don't forget that stress is the #1 inflammation producer! Also, any exercise other than swimming or cycling is considered weight-bearing. Walking, is weight-bearing and helps your bones, too. Just wanted to clear that up!

Great video Angie. I am 60 and had a DEXA scan about 18 months ago and it showed osteoporosis in hip and spine. I went on HRT (and started weight-lifting and taking supplements under guide of endocrinologist) and just recently had a repeat DEXA scan and it showed bone mineral density has improved about 9%. So it definitely IS possible to improve bone health. Now I am going to start increasing my weights. Thank you. I maintain my weight by doing intermittent fasting (no breakfast) and eating minimal carbs/sugar and no alcohol. Intermittent fasting has numerous benefits including autophagy which means the body repairs damaged cells. I follow Eric Berg, Andrew Huberman and Stephen Guidry for health/diet advice. Be careful with tuna, folks, as it contains mercury. Best wishes to everyone out there. Once you give up sugar, you no longer crave it.

Came here to say that weight training definitely made a difference in my scan! I didn't start weights until I had a base scan which showed osteopenia, around mid 40s. Two years later after doing weights (and even not super seriously,) the scan showed zero osteopenia. I'm a believer! And I follow those same folks as well! ;-) I'm 60 now, lifting much more consistently and I know I'm doing all I can to help my future self.

@@shar7508 Hi, I only just saw this. I take 4000iu Vitamin D (as oral spray) and 90 micrograms Vitamin K2 (in liquid form) for bone health. K2 takes calcium out of the blood and puts it in the bones. Also take magnesium. You can’t “overdose” on magnesium as you just pee out any excess. Magnesium has so many functions in body and is important for bone health. Stress depletes it. Hope this helps. Oh and I just ordered a 5 kg weighted vest to wear when I go for walks to add impact on bones. Best wishes.

Great tips -- but don't forget STRETCHING! I'm a former gymnast, turning 70 this year, and 15 minutes of intense stretching pre- and post-weights are a must. As we get older, we have to work twice as hard yet eat half as much just to maintain, but it's so worth it! 🏋‍♀

Stretching is not for everyone. I have hyper mobility and always stretched because thats what people tell you to do.... it wasnt until many injuries later and working with a dr of physical therapy (had other PTs in the past who weren't good) , who told me stretching is detrimental for HM people. Never even put those 2 together. He introduced me to foam rolling and told me to focus on this and no more stretching. I havent gotten anymore injuries and don't try to push myself to stretch anymore.

that's incorrect information, I'm sorry to tell you. I was a gymnast, also told i have hypermobile hips. If you're very mobile, you need more strength to insulate and protect that as you will be prone to injury. Not stretching isnt the way to go.. strength training and stretching is. Our body is made up of fascia that gets tighter if we do not move it..by stretching. Not stretching is a great way to have a really bad time in your 80s.. @@jasl9987

I’ve eaten healthy for years and juice and do yearly detox and after 50 my stomach kept bloating and bloating and getting worse and worse and I had inflammation then I would start itching like crazy - turns out I needed to limit foods with lectins. After eating a better healthy diet the stomach flattened in days - ten pounds of inflammation fell off my body in a week and I am not getting sick as much and I am back to my normal weight! The lectin free diet has changed my life !!!! I also incorporate digestion massage including my ileocaecal valve. The digestion massage will Also change your life.

The itching is most likely from high histamine foods. Google which those are..for example spinach! anything aged or fermented, Etc. Best antihistamine for hives and itching is hydroxyzine. It will change your life. By rx, extremely inexpensive.

Hey Angie! My husband says you are my double! 😊 I follow your skin care routine too. I am a certified surgical and certified holistic registered nurse. I have always been healthy, thin and physically active and exercise. 2 1/2 years ago, when I surprisingly found out I had high cholesterol, I decided to make changes in my diet so that I would not need to take any statin drugs. After doing a ton of research, I eliminated sugar, processed carbs, fake foods, canola oil, and all see oils. One year later, my Total Cholesterol was normal (went down 32 mg/dL) Normal ApoB. I do not take any medication. High cholesterol can be hereditary, but having a poor diet is not. My diet includes: 100-120 gm of protein daily, wild caught seafood, all organic pasture raised : eggs, beef, chicken. Healthy fats such as avocados, olive oil, avocado oil, pecans, walnuts, coconut oil. Most fruits and vegetables- all organic when I can. (I still eat beef, eggs, bacon, butter and have normal cholesterol) I also IF for 16 hrs. Although I wasn’t looking to loose weight, I lost 10lbs. I may need to adjust IF to 12 hrs too so I can get enough protein & gain a few more pounds! Thank you for all your videos.

I was going to show my granddaughter Chinese jump rope and could not jump! When did that happen?!? So this comes at an amazing time. To all those out there younger than me that think you are ok not to strength train…think again. I start today!!! Thanks Angie. I don’t look bad but I’m no Angie! And I can’t jump! Your way of eating inspires me to incorporate more fish. By accident i discovered that for me wheat based foods contributed to inflammation. I went to visit family out if state and while there ate whatever meals they prepared which were all low carb, kind of Paleo. After a few days i realized that my osteoarthritis and neuropathy symptoms were almost gone. Thar was in the spring of 2021and i have continued that WOE. Fish, some lean meat, leafy greens, some fruit (whole form- NEVER JUICE). I also keep sugar to under 25 grams a day. It is easy to do when you just eat whole foods. I also don't drink my calories! black coffee, black or green tea, water, sparkling water- that's it.

Hi Angie, thank you for sharing these tips, I think they’re all very helpful and important. I especially love Dr. Sims! I read her book Roar a few years ago and was blown away.I am so glad you featured her on your list. After reading what Dr. Sims wrote, I promised myself to improve my lifestyle even more than I had after my son was born and add in lifting heavy. My home gym was finally ready to start lifting in early December last year (that project took four years to come to fruition). Overhead presses are hard for me with my long arms, but I keep at it. Other lifts like squats and deadlifts are easier. I deadlifted 135# yesterday! I am 41, 5’10” and 155#, and in decent fitness level but excited for more. If I can do it, with exercise-induced asthma and arthritis in my hands and feet, just about anyone can. And it’s fun to surprise people with what we can do! Sometimes we women can be our own limiting factor, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Take care and I look forward to more your content.

Some really good information here. I started about a year ago but eating and exercise alone didn’t seem to make the scale budge. I could tell I had better stamina and was gaining some muscle definition but the scale would not budge or went up slightly. It was incredibly defeating. I worked with my doctor (I’m very lucky because he’s an internal medicine guy who likes to deal holistically with the body and not just treat symptoms) and at the end of the day he concluded that cortisol was my enemy due to a lot of stress in my life. So, just a shout out of encouragement to those in their 50s or older (or younger) that sometimes the scale isn’t your friend but non-scale victories are there. I’m under his treatment and weight has started coming off but I do eat pretty well and I exercise at a gym 3-4 times a week for 45-90 minutes. It’s work and there are no magic pills. Keep at it! Took my 6-months to see results! Hang in there!

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm 45 and made a bunch of positive changes in my diet and exercise and stuck to it for 9 months. Absolutely no change in my weight. None of what worked in my 30's is working now. I am going to add more strength training and also meditation as I think stress is also a factor for me. It's nice to know I'm not alone. Keep going and hooray for the non-scale victories. They are important too.

I’d like to add that it’s easier for her to maintain (she’s been eating like this since her 20’s) because she hasn’t created a metabolic disease state, and she doesn’t have to work a lot harder than those who have to lose. I know for me, maintaining is so much easier than when I get slack and eat cookies every day over the holidays and then have to lose. That’s not meant as a criticism. It’s something to take into consideration when trying to make changes. Every positive change is a change in the right direction. Have patience.

Hey, Angie. This was a great topic and I’m so pleased that you mentioned stomping to strengthen your bones. I was diagnosed with osteopenia six months ago and researched everything to find a medicine-free way to improve my bones. I came across something called Wolff’s law. By following Wolff’s law, doing resistance training regularly to thicken your bones will both prevent and help heal injuries. In the 1800s, Dr. Wolff studied the bones of deceased farmers who spent their lives jumping on and off hay bale wagons and he found they had the strongest, most dense bones. These days, gymnasts have been shown to have the best bones due to the constant impact of their routines. To all parents of 18 and under children, I encourage you to research weight-training and other impact activities for them. The best time to be building bones is during childhood. Once you reach 25 or 30, bone loss can begin and it’s much harder to retain the strength. Sorry this was so lengthy but I feel this is a subject that so many people are not made aware of until it’s too late. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I’ve decided not to do it and just age gracefully or actually kicking and screaming. 😂 I know my skin would look better but there are tradeoffs. I exercise, have since the age of 8 including 12 years of ballet 6 days/week. I was lifting weights in a gym when I was the only woman there. I started running at 21. Quit at 68 due to horrible plantar fasciitis so now I walk……miles and miles. I have struggled with weight ever since age 56 when I went through menopause. I’m basically on a diabetic diet because my husband is diabetic and I don’t think it’s fair to have food in the house he can’t eat. So my diet is really good 90 % of the time. Thanks for the video, Angie. When I turned 50 last year, I started to really think about all the changes and challenges that would come once I reached menopause (I'm still perimenopausal), and in addition to discovering Stacy Simms and all of the potential health issues that come with low estrogen, I assumed I'd just start HRT when it came to that point. Well, then I was diagnosed with breast cancer -- the kind that's fueled by estrogen -- and all that went out the window. I had a successful lumpectomy, followed by radiation, and I have a relatively low risk of reoccurrence (fingers crossed), but I am about to start taking estrogen-blocking pills that I will have to take for 5 years, which terrifies me. I have a family history of heart issues, stroke, osteoporosis and Alzheimer's, so I'm kind of panicking because there's a higher risk of those, in the absence of estrogen. My own research overlaps with your recommendations, so I'm going to do what I can to battle these high-risk issues naturally, without HRT. If anyone else is dealing with this type of breast cancer, please share your thoughts and advice!

For bone health you also need enough calcium-about 1200 mg a day. Plus need Vitamin D to help your body absorb and metabolize the Vitamin D. A glass of milk has about 300 mg of calcium. Most people can’t get enough so you need a supplement. The body can’t absorb ore than 500 mg of calcium at one time. The time to start getting enough calcium and vitamin D is as a youngster. You build peak bone mass at around the age of 25 and then your bone mass starts to decline. It declines less fast if you do what Angie says plus get enough calcium and vitamin D.

Glad you've educated yourself now and changed your diet because people listen to you. Now look at removing the grains because they are sugar. Limit fruit too. Fasting is very important. Very happy you are continuing to learn. Just because a person is thin doesn't mean they are healthy. Same with exercise - glad you are explaining mature women need to lift heavy and limit the cardio.

Thank you for this video, exactly what I needed. My lab work came back a little high on my cholesterol and sugar 3 months ago, I completely changed my diet not only did I get my numbers down, I shed 12 lbs., really happy about that. I still need to get my numbers down and keep them there. I need more recipe ideas can’t wait to hear yours. Thank you!!

I recommend advice from Dr. John McDoughall and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn for long term health. Weights are something I need to do more of. Thanks for the reminder.

I turned 50 last year (three years post-menopausal) and was also diagnosed with breast cancer, so no hormone therapy for me (unless you count the estrogen blocker I have to take now). 😕. Thankfully, the one I take is protective of bone health.

I don’t know, I feel like I eat better than I ever have in my life yet I went from being between 100- 115 pounds from my teens through my mid-50s, and suddenly after menopause I shot up another 15 or more pounds eating less and healthier than ever. And on a 5’ foot 3 inch frame 15-20 pounds is a substantial amount of weight. I really feel like a lot has to do with metabolism-changes that hormones do to one's metabolism, as well as genetics. Although my mother and maternal aunt is tiny at 84. And here I am on bioidentical hormones and still struggle. 😫 Also, ostepenia or osteoporosis can impact exercise possibilities, although I understand that weight-bearing to the point of fatigue is a good way to encourage osteoblast production. It really helps to be tall for one thing, or at least not to be short or short torso’d. 🤗

This is great! I just turned 60 and found out I'm post menopausal and have no estrogen, low progesterone so they're putting me on a compounded cream to help my symptoms of low sex drive, a bit of depression and I'm still getting light hot flashes, so I'm trying to learn more about what I should be doing. Thank you for all this information and sharing these doctors for us to follow!👍🙂

Excellent video Angie! Great information. We all need a reality check with our health habits and stop justifying our poor decisions and then blaming it solely on our genetics . The poor health of our citizens is overloading the healthcare system that seems to get worse by the day. We are all paying for it whether we want to or not. I'm going to be more mindful of staying away from fried foods and focus on lifting heavier weights after watching your video. You look amazing by the way!

Y'all, it is so much easier to keep it off than take it off! I swore when I dropped 70+ lbs when I turned 40 that I would never allow myself back to that place. Then into my late 40s, a new found love, a new found joy in life, pounds creeped back on even though I remained active. And here I am at 60 battling to get those stubborn menopausal pounds off. It seems a little more difficult because I'm in a place in life where every single day feels like a celebration! What a blessing!

I'm a runner. When I jog my heart rate is around 150bpm. I can't tell because I sing and have full conversations without getting winded. I love jogging hills because I feel like I'm really exercise. When I was stationed in south Korea I would go off and jog mini mountains

I love Stacy Sims too and transitioned from my typical pilates to TRX, weights and HITT training! I disagree with the statement about eating less and moving more- you may also check out Dr Sara Gottfried. I just couldn't seem to lose any weight, until I started following her protocol. I don't count calories, lost 8 lbs. Now, I'm at my ideal weight and feel great.

My body actually is benefited by a little grass feed butter and Ghee (clarified and cultured butter) is really good. And lamb is healing for me (I eat it occasionally) and it's considered healing in India medicine, I believe. And some people actually do well eating beef (Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type has blood type O as the one that does well with a "Carnivore/Caveman diet").

I love jumping! I use a rebounder and it is so much fun. Have you ever tried one? Rebounding has so many benefits and it is so much easier on your joints.

Angie you are inspiring! I admire your effort to always tap the subject so professionally! You make the research, you analyze and then you introduce it as a routine with major consistency. I know it takes a lot of self discipline. I think it is all about little daily choices that sum up to great results. Greetings from Poland!

Love this type of content regarding menopause. I have struggled for a decade and have recently found some things that are working for me. I’m a big believer in healthy diet and exercise. I follow Dr Taylor after watching one of your videos so I’ll check out the other 2 women you recommend. Thank you, Angie!

This video was so helpful! I’m struggling with exercise because I have lower disc issues and my back doesn’t like high intensity workouts. Learning that it’s better to stay in zone two with an occasional burst of high intensity is music to my ears - I’m hopeful my back will like that much better. As always you are a wealth of knowledge - thank you so much for sharing!
