The very first bed linen she looked at with little white flowers on a ‘green’ background was from Marks and Spencer’s - I was working there when it was launched - their attempt at a Laura Ashley look I bought both pink and green versions at the time - at least 30 years ago . The green was much more of a grass green and not the faded olive colour as it is now ! So if he has only been there 20 years then he must have inherited it! Such a beautiful building in shoddy hands

If you wait to salt your food til it's on the plate (never tastes right to most of us), you'll use far more than if it's salted a bit while cooking and adjusted on the plate, if needed. I think he's imposing his dislike/fear of salt on others. He's a hotelier, not my diet police.

I really wish they would give a helping hand to those who are more appreciative and deserving than this man. But maybe being obnoxious to someone who is trying to help you is considered more entertaining telly and it was all an act? Personally, I enjoyed the previous episode I watched, Key West, Newquay, much more. The hotelier takes on board all of Ruth's advice, implements her suggestions and it is a joy to see his joy as his hotel comes back from the brink of failure

The hotelier seems to have a split personality. One moment he is fulminating against Ruth for criticising him. The next moment he is agreeing with everything she says and sounding grateful. Then he is fulminating again. I reckon he knew that all this would be on TV and so thought he had better at least pretend to be doing something to improve the place.

Divorced former civil servant. I wonder if they introduced him like that to imply his personality from the start. He actually sounds like a depressed person who has lost his will to do anything. Probably the divorce blind-sided him (even if it was his own fault at least partially; men are often shocked that their wives are unhappy) and he's never had much desire to live or do anything since then. One of those men who just can't seem to function without a wife giving him some kind of impetus for getting on with life.
@inhighspeed
@inhighspeed 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, but love and its aftermath are not strictly male/female. I had an incredibly difficult time when my husband and I broke up; he kept me on track in my life for many years. It took him a while to get back at it as well, so I had had a similar effect on his life. As we know, it happens to women too, whether coming out of a m/f relationship or f/f, so it's not exclusive to men, either. Love is both the best and the worst of our human frailties.

The way Peter flipped out over the salt, I’d be really concerned about what else he might be savagely opposed to and intractable about that wouldn’t normally occur to a person. His mercuriality, though, is what’s most concerning, since you never know what you’re going to get, literally, from one minute to the next. I’m not saying he’s a bad person, just that since it’s more like a B&B with him being present as owner, I don’t think I’d take the risk of staying there.

t sounds like Peter used to work in government overseas, but look at how he procrastinates in his own life. Now, you know why dealing with any civil servants is a nightmare as they sit on their hands. If this is their logic of thinking, like Peter, you can see why the country is in a mess and everything is broken. He has no clue at all; he seems like a nice bloke. Surely everyone can see if a guy like this was even on a jury, you would be found guilty even if you were innocent. It's not possible for the Hotel to have been in business for 20 years - it would have been bankrupt long ago

I don't know, there are countless establishments offering substandard service and accommodations that somehow hobble along nonetheless. Never underestimate the depths some people will go to save a few quid, or bucks, as the case may be.

@@inhighspeed Thanks, but I guess I was being sarcastic more than anything because this guy was soooo exasperating - unfortunately they always are in this series but thats why so many of us watch it LOL

I'd imagine he's got a big civil service pension paying towards the losses the hotel invariably makes.

My idea too. He's considered unfit for work on personality grounds. No one can work with him in a team. In the Netherlands they call it room 101. Kept on the salary list of the government, but not been expected to turn up for work. I know a few. But it is just a wild guess on my part. @@nudisco300

Would we watch these shows if they didn't have people in them that made us react?

I love these shows...helps me 'see' what needs doing in my own tiny apartment! I think alot of these manipulative people saw how Gordon Ramsay swept in, spent a fortune to rehab their facilities and think if they scream for help, subsequent inspectors will clean up and rehab their hotels. 20 years of filth and neglect...clean up you slobs!!

today the idea of exterior is not important is ridiculous. many persons are going to check on Google Map if the hotel is really there (lol) and if it's look nice.

I stayed there ,it was Exactly like on the show , it was seedy in the extreme the owner is totally mad , but a lovely man the flags on the table is a thing as is the "museum" downstairs , the surrounding area is like Beirut

I love watching these shows,however, I felt like Ruth was extra negative in this one. If this was the first of the episodes that I seen, I probably wouldn't have kept watching because of it. He at least was very self-aware and deserved a lot more credit and respect 👏 😢
