You're very correct, this is a derivative work. This has no education, parody, critism/review, etc. A derivative work is something that uses the music to do things like music videos, animations, etc. If the school wanted to use these songs they would have to purchase creative commons liscense for every song they used as they all are copyright to their respective owners. However they'd have to purchase the correct creative commons, like one that doesn't have ND on it, which means no derivative work.
