When I was young, I sold hotteok at a street stall when I was on the street, and the hotteok I bought at that time was so hot that I burned my mouth, but I think buy hotteok for the taste of burning mouth

Hotteok is the bomb!!! People start selling them on the streets in Korea starting mid November ish when the weather gets colder... best street food. Some people change up the filling - ive seen chocolate and even noodles (japchae). Also really cheap, $1-2 per one lol Glad ya enjoyed it!!!

Hey so yes hotteok did originate from Chinese varieties and came from popular street food in China, bought to Korea by Chinese immigrants in 19th century and these Chinese did modify a little to suit Korean tastes more. HOWEVER, if we wanna go WAY way back, the ORIGINAL original, it actually originated from present day Central Asia(western regions such as present day Arabia, Türkiye, etc.) It traveled to Ancient China via Silk Road. Hotteok means “barbarian rice cakes” which comes from one of the names Chinese used to call it called “Hu bing” which also means barbarian cake. The Hu in Chinese means barbarian The ho in Korean means barbarian This is because Chinese in ancient China called these western people the “Hu people”, which means barbarians, thus the name being “hu bing”. Bing in Chinese kinda means like a pancake sorta thing. So now there’s Chinese varieties and a Korean variety :)

Hotteok was my favourite dessert/snack when I grew up in Korea. Now in Australia when I’m craving it, I buy the prepackaged ones in Korean supermarkets but it’s not the same as getting it from the street food vendor. 😢 Sounds like you got the crispiness of the outside and the chewiness of the inside perfect. Never seen Hotteok with powdered sugar and ice cream before but why not? 😊
